Bald Mountain Colony Introduce

For New Yorkers seeking a deep connection to the history and natural splendor of the Adirondacks, Bald Mountain Colony represents a classic summer tradition. Located in the popular vacation hub of Old Forge, this campground and residential colony serves as a seasonal sanctuary for those who appreciate the quietude of the forest and the camaraderie of a long-standing community. Unlike transient overnight stops, the Colony is often characterized by its stable, close-knit environment where families return year after year to spend their summers under the towering pines of Herkimer County. It offers a nostalgic look at Adirondack life, where the days are measured by the morning mist on the lakes and the evening glow of campfires.

The atmosphere at Bald Mountain Colony is distinctly different from the high-traffic commercial resorts found elsewhere in the region. It is a place that values privacy and tradition, catering largely to seasonal residents who have established roots in the area. While the management style has been noted as firm regarding community standards and property regulations, many residents find the consistency ensures a predictable and quiet environment for their summer retreat. For a New Yorker looking for a permanent summer base rather than a quick weekend tent site, the Colony provides an opportunity to become part of a specific Adirondack subculture that prioritizes the preservation of the "old school" camping spirit.

Location and Accessibility are among the primary draws for this specific site. Nestled at 165 Tuttle Rd, Old Forge, NY 13420, the campground is situated in a prime area of the Town of Webb. It is located just off the main thoroughfares, providing a secluded feel while remaining incredibly close to the village's amenities. Most notably, it sits near the base of its namesake, Bald Mountain (also known as Rondaxe Mountain), which features one of the most popular fire tower hikes in the entire Adirondack Park. For residents, this means world-class hiking is essentially in their backyard. The facility is accessible via Route 28, the main artery of the Central Adirondacks, and provides a wheelchair-accessible parking lot to accommodate visitors and residents with mobility needs.

  • Located in the heart of Old Forge, New York’s premier Adirondack vacation village.
  • Directly adjacent to the trailhead for Bald Mountain and the Rondaxe Fire Tower.
  • Accessible via Tuttle Road, offering a buffer from the noise of the main highway.
  • Proximity to the Fulton Chain of Lakes, including First through Fourth Lakes.
  • Wheelchair-accessible parking lot and on-site parking for residents and guests.
  • Short driving distance to the Enchanted Forest Water Safari and Calypso’s Cove.

Services Offered at Bald Mountain Colony are designed to support a seasonal lifestyle rather than a short-term lodging experience. The park primarily functions as a community for those who own their own trailers or seasonal units, providing the essential infrastructure required for a multi-month stay in the woods. The services emphasize the maintenance of a communal environment where the focus is on long-term stability. While it is a "back-to-basics" facility in terms of luxury amenities, it provides the fundamental requirements for a comfortable Adirondack summer. Key services available to the community include:

  • Seasonal site leasing for RVs, trailers, and established camping units.
  • Basic utility hookups including electrical service and water access.
  • On-site parking areas designed for both residents and their visitors.
  • Common area maintenance to preserve the natural wooded aesthetic of the colony.
  • Waste management and trash disposal services for long-term campers.
  • Professional management oversight to maintain community rules and safety.

Features and Highlights of the Colony revolve around its proximity to the best recreation in Central New York. Because Old Forge is a hub for all four seasons, the highlights of staying at Bald Mountain Colony extend beyond the park’s borders. Residents benefit from being "insiders" in a town that offers everything from high-speed water slides to serene paddleboarding. The park itself is a haven for those who enjoy the specific flora and fauna of the Adirondack Park, with frequent sightings of deer and other local wildlife right at the doorstep of the campsites. The highlight for many is the balance between the social life of the colony and the solitude of the forest.

  • Prime access to the 2-mile round-trip Bald Mountain hike with panoramic lake views.
  • Close proximity to the Moose River for kayaking and canoeing adventures.
  • Family-friendly environment that is traditionally "good for kids" and promotes outdoor play.
  • Dog-friendly policy allowing residents to bring their pets along for the summer season.
  • Walking distance or a short drive to the Old Forge shops, hardware store, and restaurants.
  • A quiet residential atmosphere that contrasts with the bustling tourist center of the village.

For those interested in joining the community or inquiring about current seasonal availability, it is best to contact the management directly. Given the private nature of the colony and the long-term commitment of many of its residents, speaking with the owners is the most effective way to understand the current rules, leasing agreements, and any available spots for the upcoming season.

What is worth choosing about Bald Mountain Colony is the opportunity for a consistent, dedicated Adirondack experience. In a region where hotels and short-term rentals can be prohibitively expensive during the peak summer months, having a seasonal home at the Colony offers a more sustainable way to enjoy the mountains. It is worth choosing for the person who wants a "home away from home"—a place where the neighbors are familiar, the location is unbeatable for hikers, and the lifestyle is centered on the simplicity of nature. While the management style is specific and requires adherence to strict community rules, for many, this is a small price to pay for the security and quiet of a well-ordered Adirondack colony.

Choosing Bald Mountain Colony means you are placing yourself at the gateway of the High Peaks and the Fulton Chain, with every imaginable outdoor activity just minutes away. Whether you are spending your morning climbing to the fire tower or your afternoon relaxing by the creek, the Colony provides the structural foundation for a summer filled with memories. For the New Yorker who values tradition and the specific charm of Old Forge, this campground remains a significant part of the local landscape, offering a unique path to achieving the dream of a permanent Adirondack summer retreat.

The owners are on a total power trip. They will take every and any opportunity to create confrontation. There are multiple examples of them actively working to make the lives of the people in the community harder, such as not allowing them to sell their own property, demanding that trailers get torn down after owners spend thousands in remodels. These are just a few examples, but there are too many to count. It's sad to see a place that was once a peaceful escape, being riddled with drama caused mainly by the owner's boyfriend who unfortunately has a severe drinking problem. LEASERS BEWARE!!
