CampMD Introduce

Nestled on the serene shores of St. George Island in Piney Point, Maryland, CampMD—historically known as Camp Merryelande—offers a unique coastal escape that has welcomed generations of families since 1984. This premier destination is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it is a multi-faceted resort that combines the rustic charm of a campground with the comfort of a beach club and resort hotel. Situated where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay, the facility provides an "old-time" coastal atmosphere complemented by modern conveniences, making it a favorite for those seeking tranquility away from the hustle of Washington D.C. and Baltimore.

The spirit of CampMD is rooted in its beachfront identity. Unlike inland facilities, this resort places guests directly on the sand, offering expansive views of the infinite horizon. Whether you are looking for a snug cottage for a romantic weekend or a large lodge capable of accommodating a family reunion of up to 24 people, the property features 13 unique accommodations designed to feel like a home away from home. Its reputation as a "hidden gem" is reinforced by the repeat visitors who return year after year to enjoy the private beach, the gentle lull of the river, and the warm hospitality of the local staff.

Located at the southern tip of St. George Island, CampMD is easily accessible via a short bridge from Piney Point. While it feels worlds away, it is conveniently located within a two-hour drive for most Maryland and Virginia residents. The property is designed with inclusivity in mind, ensuring that the beauty of the Maryland shoreline is accessible to all guests, including those requiring specific mobility accommodations.

  • Address: 15914 Camp Merryelande Rd, Piney Point, MD 20674, USA
  • Phone: (301) 994-1722
  • Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible entrance, parking lot, and restrooms are available.
  • Parking: Free on-site parking and self-parking for all registered guests.
  • Navigation: Located just a short drive from the historic Piney Point Lighthouse and Museum.

CampMD offers a comprehensive suite of services that cater to diverse camping styles. For the traditional camper, the "Far East Beach" and "Central Beach" areas provide primitive sites right on the sand. For those who prefer a more structured stay, the resort offers full-service RV sites and a variety of cottage rentals. The onsite services are designed to be self-sufficient, allowing guests to focus entirely on their vacation without needing to leave the island for basic necessities.

  • RV Camping: Sites equipped with electric, water, and sewer hookups.
  • Waterfront Cottages: Unique homes ranging from 1 to 6 bedrooms with full kitchens and satellite TV.
  • Beach Camping: Primitive walk-in sites along the Potomac River with fire rings and picnic tables.
  • Grilling Stations: Charcoal grills provided at various sites for guest use.
  • Payment Flexibility: Accepts credit cards, debit cards, and NFC mobile payments.
  • Onsite Services: Dedicated staff to assist with gear transport to beach sites and general maintenance.

The highlights of CampMD revolve around its unparalleled access to the water and its family-friendly environment. The resort is particularly well-known for its "shallow water" swimming area, which is ideal for children. Guests can spend their days fishing off the lighted pier, kayaking along the island’s coast, or engaging in a friendly game of beach volleyball. The property’s commitment to providing a wholesome environment makes it a top choice for birthday parties and milestone celebrations.

  • Private Sandy Beach: Direct access for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing.
  • Lighted Fishing Pier: A popular spot for local anglers, especially during the "rough water" peaks.
  • Children’s Activities: On-site playground and safe, shallow water areas for young swimmers.
  • Recreation: Bike rentals, kayak rentals, and beach volleyball courts are available.
  • Nature Trails: Scenic paths for bird watching and exploring the local island ecology.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: Dogs are welcome (with specific restrictions and a small fee), ensuring the whole family stays together.

When deciding on a Maryland waterfront destination, CampMD is worth choosing because it offers an authentic island experience without the typical resort crowds. Its location on St. George Island provides a level of privacy and natural beauty that is hard to match. The cottages are a standout feature, as they come fully equipped with everything needed for a multi-day stay, including air conditioning that keeps guests comfortable even during the height of the Maryland summer.

Furthermore, the value of the experience lies in its versatility. You can choose a rugged night under the stars on the sand or a luxurious stay in a modernized lodge with breathtaking river views. For those who appreciate history and community, the staff—noted by guests for being friendly and accommodating—ensures that the legacy of this "St. Mary's County treasure" continues to thrive. Whether you are planning a quiet retreat or a lively family gathering, CampMD provides the perfect Maryland backdrop for creating lasting memories.

This my most beautiful trip except some problems. We came here and I expected it to be a clean beach again but Nasty sand all over the floor. Flies in cottage #5. I expected a clean beach. But there were too many jellyfish. 2 of them stung my Elbow and my arm. I saw a Giant Sea nettle while going deep and I ran out terrified. The deeper is 100% danger. However they had Nice service. Cool snacks and I had a good but normal time

I kind of out of this world experience at the very edge of Piney point. There are so many shells and sea glass along the little beach. It’s hard to imagine coming from city life!
