Campsite Audubon Introduce
For residents of Rhode Island, the name Yawgoog is more than just a destination; it is a storied institution that has defined the outdoor experience in the Ocean State for over a century. Nestled in the southwestern corner of the state in the village of Rockville, the Yawgoog Scout Reservation is an 1,800-acre sanctuary of white pines and pristine waters. Within this vast landscape lies Campsite Audubon, a premier camping plot located in the vibrant Camp Sandy Beach section. Known for its high energy and modern facilities, Camp Sandy Beach—often referred to as the "Powerhouse"—provides a dynamic backdrop for Campsite Audubon. This particular site is named in honor of the naturalists and stewards of the land, reflecting a commitment to environmental education that resonates deeply with the local community.
Campsite Audubon offers a unique vantage point within the reservation, blending the rustic charm of the South County woods with the structured activity of one of the nation’s most prestigious scout camps. From the perspective of a Rhode Islander, camping here is an invitation to join a legacy of adventure. The site is characterized by its proximity to the diverse ecosystems of the reservation, where the sounds of the forest create a natural symphony for campers. While some humorous local lore might suggest unusual noises in the trees, the reality is a rich habitat filled with native birdlife and wildlife, staying true to its namesake. Whether you are part of a scouting troop during the bustling eight-week summer program or a private group exploring the serenity of the off-season, Audubon provides a stable and scenic home base for all outdoor pursuits.
Location and Accessibility
Campsite Audubon is located within the Yawgoog Scout Reservation at 61 Camp Yawgoog Road, Rockville, RI 02873, USA. For local users traveling from the Providence area, the site is a convenient 45-to-55-minute drive south via I-95 and RI-138. Its location in the town of Hopkinton places it near the Connecticut border, offering a secluded wilderness experience that remains easily accessible for weekend getaways. Once inside the reservation, Audubon is situated in the Camp Sandy Beach district, which occupies the northern and northwestern portions of the developed camp areas near the shores of Yawgoog Pond.
Accessibility at the site is managed with a focus on safety and the preservation of the forest environment. Upon arrival, visitors are directed to park in designated areas such as the Sandy Beach Lot or Tim O’Neil Field. To maintain the "pedestrian-first" culture of the reservation, vehicle traffic within the camping loops is limited. However, established gravel and dirt paths provide clear routes for transporting gear to the campsite. The terrain around Audubon is relatively level, a common feature of the sandy-soil landscape in this part of the reservation, making it an accessible choice for groups with varying levels of mobility. Proximity to the Metcalf Hall dining facility and the reservation’s primary medical hub ensures that essential services are always within a short walking distance.

What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Campsite Audubon is particularly worth it for those who want a high-energy, modern camping experience without sacrificing the beauty of the Rhode Island wilderness. As part of Camp Sandy Beach, Audubon places you in the middle of the most active program area on the reservation. It is an ideal choice for groups that prioritize water sports and shooting range access, as the "Powerhouse" of the camp is designed to keep scouts and families engaged from dawn until dusk. The proximity to Metcalf Hall is a significant advantage, reducing travel time for meals and allowing more time for the activities that make Yawgoog famous.
Furthermore, Audubon is worth choosing for its reputation as a "good for kids" location. The flatter terrain of the Sandy Beach loop and the concentration of facilities make it a less daunting environment for younger or first-time campers. While you are surrounded by 1,800 acres of woods, the layout of the Audubon site provides a secure, community-focused feel. Whether you are listening for the "monkey noises" (which are almost certainly the calls of the local barred owls or grey squirrels) or participating in the thunderous camp cheers at the dining hall, a stay at Audubon ensures you are at the heart of the Yawgoog experience. It is a site that balances the call of the wild with the comforts and safety of a top-tier recreational facility, making it a favorite for Rhode Island campers year after year.

Customer Reviews
Perfect place to camp on a long summer week. Enjoy hanging out by the fire, making hammocks in a city, being nearing the dining hall/ bathrooms, and sleeping early. Recently though, I’ve been hearing these noises coming from the trees. These noises sound like a monkey but I think it’s just my imagination.
I’d suggest that you leave your monkey at home! They buried mine alive and by the time I dug him up he was dead!
Perfect Place to camp on a long week but watch out for a screaming monkey
