Fernwood Forest Campground Introduce
For Massachusetts residents seeking a genuine connection with nature, Fernwood Forest Campground serves as a hidden gem in the picturesque Berkshires. Located in the town of Hinsdale, this family-owned and operated facility spans approximately 115 acres of lush, natural woodlands. It offers a refreshing alternative to the often crowded state parks, providing a quiet, wooded setting that emphasizes privacy and relaxation. Whether you are a local hiker tackling a section of the Appalachian Trail or a family looking for a weekend getaway from the bustle of the city, this campground provides the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories under the canopy of Western Massachusetts.
The campground is designed to cater to a variety of camping styles, from traditional tent enthusiasts to modern RV travelers. What sets Fernwood Forest apart is its commitment to maintaining the "forest" experience; sites are thoughtfully integrated into the landscape rather than being cleared out, ensuring that every visitor feels immersed in the greenery. The hospitable atmosphere is a direct result of it being a family business, where guests are often greeted personally by the owners and provided with a wealth of local information to enhance their stay. From the chirping of birds at sunrise to the dark, star-filled nights, the environment here is exactly what many Massachusetts locals look for when they head "out west" to the hills of Berkshire County.
Conveniently located at 350 Longview Ave, Hinsdale, MA 01235, USA, Fernwood Forest Campground is easily accessible while still feeling pleasantly remote. For those traveling from Central or Eastern Massachusetts, the drive through the rolling hills of the Berkshires is part of the experience. The campground is situated just off Route 8, a major north-south artery in the region. To reach the site, visitors typically take Route 8 into Hinsdale, turn onto Michaels Road, and follow it to the end before taking a left onto Longview Avenue. The entrance is marked by a distinctive red sign, welcoming you into the forest.
Accessibility within the grounds is a priority, with well-maintained gravel roads that lead to the various loops. While the road up to the main office features a bit of a slope, the camping pads themselves are designed to be level to accommodate both tents and RVs up to 40 feet in length. The campground's proximity to local attractions is a significant draw; the famous Appalachian Trail runs just west of the property, and the 300-acre Plunkett Reservoir is within walking distance, offering additional recreational opportunities like swimming and boating just minutes from your campsite.
Fernwood Forest Campground provides a comprehensive suite of onsite services aimed at making the camping experience both comfortable and convenient. The management understands that even in the woods, certain modern amenities are essential for a stress-free trip. The services offered include:
- Full-service RV accommodations featuring both 30-amp and 50-amp electric hookups.
- Potable drinking water access provided at every single campsite across the park.
- Onsite laundry facilities located in a clean, cabin-like building with a reading area for guest use.
- A dedicated propane station for bulk refills, ensuring RVers and grillers never run out of fuel.
- Professional "Pump Out" services and a centrally located dump station for self-contained vehicles.
- Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi access available throughout the campground (optimized for browsing rather than streaming).
- Seasonally available camper rentals for those who want the RV experience without owning their own rig.
- Firewood and ice available for purchase on-site to keep your campfires bright and your coolers cold.
Beyond the basic necessities, the campground is packed with features and highlights that cater specifically to families and outdoor enthusiasts. The layout encourages exploration and play, making it an ideal choice for those traveling with children or pets. Notable highlights include:
- A large, woodchip-lined playground featuring swings, slides, and climbing structures for younger visitors.
- Extensive recreational facilities including a volleyball court, basketball court, tetherball poles, and horseshoe pits.
- A spacious entertainment pavilion and a separate recreation hall, perfect for gathering on rainy days or for group activities.
- Direct proximity to the Appalachian Trail, allowing hikers to jump on the trail for a day trip or an overnight section hike.
- Walking access to Plunkett Reservoir Beach, where campers can enjoy hours of fishing, paddling, and swimming.
- A "Welcome Bag" provided at check-in, containing a site map, local Berkshire guides, a garbage bag, and even a pen to help you get settled.
- Pet-friendly policies that welcome dogs, provided they are kept on a leash and supervised.
- Exceptionally clean comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers, frequently praised by guests for their maintenance.
For those interested in booking a stay at Fernwood Forest Campground, it is recommended to reach out directly to the management or use their online reservation system. Because it is a smaller, family-run park, sites can fill up quickly during peak Berkshire seasons, especially during autumn foliage or around local cultural events at Tanglewood. The campground typically operates from May 1st through October 15th.

When considering where to spend your vacation time in the Berkshires, Fernwood Forest Campground is worth choosing for its incredible value and authentic atmosphere. Many visitors have noted that for a price significantly lower than nearby state-run facilities, you receive more space, better amenities, and a much quieter environment. The "quiet setting" and "wooded sites" are not just marketing terms; they are the reality of this 115-acre property. Choosing this campground means supporting a local family business that takes immense pride in their hospitality, often going above and beyond to help guests—whether it's helping tow a trailer or providing a personalized "goodie bag" of local info.
Furthermore, the location is worth choosing for its versatility. It serves equally well as a basecamp for high-energy adventures like hiking Mt. Greylock or as a peaceful sanctuary for a week of reading and relaxation. The cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers is a consistent highlight for long-term campers, ensuring that the "roughing it" part of camping never becomes a chore. If you value a place where you are treated like a neighbor rather than just a reservation number, and where the natural beauty of the Massachusetts forest is the main attraction, Fernwood Forest is a top-tier choice.

Stay here! The campground is very nice and an incredible value!! It was nice to support a family business and the value cannot be beat. There are so many features. State parks charge more for less.- Quiet setting- Wooded sites- All sites have water and some have water and electric- Clean bathrooms and showers (only 2 of each but in 2 evenings, I never had an issue. I was gone during the day and not sure what it’s like in that timeframe. it’s not a large campground and there are multiple RVs and I suspect they use their own facilities.)- You will receive a welcome bag at check-in with a site map to help you get to your site, the rules and regs, a guide to The Berkshires, a large garbage bag, and a pen.- The On-site laundry is in a small cabin-like building. It is clean and has a table, two chairs, and many books- On-site propane station- Large playground, an entertainment pavilion, a rec room (I didn’t use them so not sure what’s included)I will definitely stay again if/when I’m the area.
I’m supporting my son walk the Appalachian trail and when it’s time to look for a place to stay for one night, this place was my best choice because of its proximity to the trail. Since I didn’t make a reservation ahead of time, I was concerned that they won’t be able to accommodate me. Boy was I surprised! Not only that they were able to have a spot for my 28-ft RV but their hospitality surpassed my expectations. I was greeted with a friendly face of the host who happened to own this place. I felt like I have known them for years. Overall, our stay was uneventful and quiet. Whether you stay here for one day or for one week, this place is ideal especially for family with children. Unfortunately, I was just passing through. So I didn’t really get a chance to enjoy fully the natural beauty of Fernwood Forest Campground. Strongly recommended!
I stayed here two nights Saturday and Sunday in tent camping. Stayed at 39 and although a very small site, it worked good for me in a single tent. Had all paperwork ready to go at office for me to just pick up when I arrived. Bathrooms were so nice and I loved having a nice shower. Probably one of the better camp bathrooms I have seen. Also had a nice playground and things to do for kids. Really cute. I would recommend people stay here if going to Mt Greylock area, Wahconah falls, etc
This campground has a lot of amenities for what you pay. You can get a site with just water, or electric and water. Can do RV or tent.Warm showers and playground for kids with communal areas.Quiet and dark both nights and the staff is very friendly, the campground is in the family. Will definitely stay here again!
We stayed here for 5 nights while my husband was taking a course nearby. We stayed in the onsite camper rental with our toddlers. It was such a nice quiet campground, the owners were wonderful, the camper was perfect, and everything was so well cared for. My kids loved the playground and rec hall. The main campground bathrooms were extremely clean. The rental camper was so convenient for us as we traveled 13 hours from home with really young kids. I was so grateful to find a place we could roam around during the day while my husband had the vehicle. Also the laundry facilities worked great and was a lifesaver for us. Beautiful place!
