Harpers Ferry Campground Introduce

Nestled along a scenic three-mile stretch of the Potomac River, Harpers Ferry Campground serves as a premier destination for West Virginians and travelers looking to immerse themselves in the "Almost Heaven" outdoors. This 11-acre facility is uniquely positioned at the confluence of history and recreation, providing a direct link to the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the famous C&O Canal Towpath. Managed in partnership with River Riders, the campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it is a full-scale adventure base where the rugged beauty of the Appalachian landscape meets the excitement of river-based sports. For local families and outdoor enthusiasts, it offers a peaceful yet active retreat where the sounds of the flowing river and the occasional passing train create a nostalgic, quintessential West Virginia atmosphere.

The campground is designed to accommodate a diverse range of visitors, from solo thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail to families seeking a multi-day vacation. With its deep-water access on the Potomac, it has become a favorite for those who enjoy boating, fishing, and flat-water tubing. The facility prides itself on being a mixed-use site, meaning it buzzes with the energy of rafters launching into the water and zipliners soaring through the canopy above. Despite this activity, the campground maintains a friendly, community-oriented spirit, overseen by a dedicated caretaker who ensures that every guest feels welcome and informed about the area's many opportunities for exploration.

Location and accessibility are standout features for this site. Located at 1816 Potomac Street, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425, the campground is conveniently reachable via Bakerton Road. Travelers arriving from the DC or Baltimore areas find it a straightforward drive, crossing the Potomac and Shenandoah River bridges before passing through a historic one-way tunnel that leads directly to the riverfront. The campground is notably inclusive, providing wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking lots, and restroom facilities, ensuring that the beauty of the Potomac is accessible to all guests. For those who prefer to leave the car behind, a 1.5-mile walking and biking trail connects the campground directly to the historic Lower Town of Harpers Ferry, allowing for easy access to local museums, shops, and restaurants.

Harpers Ferry Campground offers a wide array of services that cater to modern camping needs while preserving the authentic outdoor experience. Whether you are looking for the comfort of a climate-controlled cabin or a primitive spot by the water, the following services are available:

  • RV Camping with 30 and 50 AMP electric service, including sites with full hook-ups.
  • Rustic and riverfront cabin rentals equipped with heat, air conditioning, and private bathrooms.
  • Dedicated wooded tent sites in the Nottingham Woods area for a more secluded experience.
  • Water sports equipment rentals, including canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and tubes.
  • Marina and boat ramp access for personal watercraft and fishing boats.
  • On-site bathhouse with hot showers and portable restroom trailers with running water.
  • Bicycle and E-bike rentals for exploring the nearby C&O Canal Towpath.
  • Convenient payment options accepting major credit cards and debit cards for camping fees and rentals.

Beyond the standard amenities, the campground is packed with features and highlights that make it a favorite for repeat visitors. The integration with River Riders means adventure is never more than a few steps away. Key highlights include:

  • A dedicated playground and kid-friendly hiking trails, making it an excellent choice for families with children.

  • Pet-friendly policies that allow dogs to join in on the camping fun.
  • Access to the Zipline Canopy Tour, which ends directly within the campground grounds.
  • Excellent fishing spots for smallmouth bass and other local species along the deep-water section of the river.

  • Proximity to the Appalachian Trail, allowing hikers to easily transition from the trail to a comfortable campsite.
  • Stunning waterfront views that are frequently described by guests as some of the best in the region.

For those planning a trip, it is highly recommended to book in advance, as weekends during the summer and fall seasons can fill up months ahead of time. You can contact the Harpers Ferry Campground team at the following location and phone numbers:

When deciding where to stay in the Eastern Panhandle, Harpers Ferry Campground is worth choosing for its unbeatable proximity to the water and the historic town. While some sites are nestled close together, the trade-off is unparalleled access to a four-mile stretch of deep water that is perfect for powerboats and jet skis—a rarity for campgrounds in this area. It is worth choosing for the person who wants to wake up with the river at their doorstep and spend their day alternating between historic sightseeing and high-adrenaline water sports.

The campground also offers a unique "middle ground" for those who want the rugged feel of West Virginia but appreciate the safety and convenience of on-site staff and modern bathhouses. While the active railroad nearby is a reminder of the town's industrial past, many find the rhythmic sound of the trains to be a charming part of the Harpers Ferry experience. For a vacation that combines the thrill of the river, the challenge of the trails, and the quiet beauty of a Potomac sunset, Harpers Ferry Campground remains a top-tier choice for any West Virginia resident or visitor.

This is a wonderful place to camp. The waterfront is really beautiful! The Campground Caretaker/Host was personable and helpful, most excellent at his job! The sites are on the higher end of costs as you will see if you look. The bike trail from the campground to harpers ferry is passible but quite overgrown. the 2 down trees you have to cross have obviously been there for a long time and the brush needs to be cut back! The sites are packed in tight but most campgrounds do that! I would not tent camp here unless you can sleep through freight trains going by 40 yards away all night long. with the air conditioner turned up in my camper it pretty much drowns anything out. It is flat water at the campground but it is also the muddy side of the river so wading out is muddy. The fishing looked great and I will be coming with gear next time!

I'll give a very honest review about this campground. We go camping a lot, mainly remote areas. If that's what you're looking for, this is not the spot. We were camping on the river front tent sites. The Good: The river is beautiful and the views are nice. fishing is great and there are many large sized cats in there. Within 5 mins, I caught a catfish. Close to harpers ferry town (cool mountain town) Camping store has ice and firewood for sale, and bug spray, etc. Relatively clean bathrooms and easy access to the river (albeit very muddy beach)The Bad: This riverfront location is literally 30 yds from a VERY active railway. Trains run constantly, especially and even more active at night. All night long. It is so loud it shakes all the tents and it's the only thing you can hear at all. They offer free ear plugs in the store. I'm not sure how anyone sleeps, not well I'm sure. other campers were complaining as well. it feels like it's right on top of you.The camping sites are only 25 feet apart and luckily we had good, chill neighbors on both sides. If you are cooking on your fire, you'll be 10 ft from your neighborhoods picnic table. When the trains aren't running, you can hear every sound from your neighbors. There is no privacy.Mosquitos and bugs are a problem, but that's anywhere near the water. Can't really stop that. All in all, this place has potential and if they spaced the sites out, it'd be better. The loud trains ruined it for us though.:
