Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch Introduce

For residents of Pennsylvania who seek a true wilderness experience paired with the unique requirements of equestrian travel, Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch stands as a distinguished destination. Located on the western edge of the expansive 600,000-acre Allegheny National Forest, this 150-acre ranch in Tidioute offers a rare blend of rugged natural beauty and specialized services. Since its establishment in 1994, the ranch has carved out a reputation as a sanctuary for those looking to "unplug" and reconnect with nature. It is positioned just a stone’s throw from the Hickory Creek Wilderness, one of only two congressionally designated wilderness areas in the Commonwealth, making it a prime location for those who appreciate primitive landscapes and undisturbed wildlife.

The ranch is not merely a place to park a trailer; it is a community focused on the outdoor lifestyle. While it is widely recognized as a premier horse camping facility, its appeal extends to hikers, kayakers, and families looking for a peaceful mountain retreat. The atmosphere at the ranch is defined by "genuine western hospitality," where the staff and hosts are known for going above and beyond to ensure guest safety and comfort. This is particularly valued by solo travelers and riders, who often remark on the extra layer of security provided by the attentive ranch team. Whether you are visiting for a weekend rodeo event or a week-long immersion in the Allegheny Mountains, the renewed energy and modern improvements at the ranch provide a welcoming environment for all.

The facility has integrated accessibility features such as a wheelchair-accessible entrance and dedicated parking lots. Its proximity to the town of Tidioute and the Allegheny River means that while you are deep in the woods, you are never too far from local conveniences. However, campers should be prepared for limited cell service in the heart of the ranch, which serves as a perfect excuse to focus on the well-marked trails and stunning ridge views.

What is worth choosing at Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch is the ability to tailor your experience to your specific needs. For horse owners, the electric sites with turnout pastures are worth choosing for the convenience and peace of mind they offer. If you are a hiker or backpacker, the primitive sites are worth choosing for their gorgeous, secluded settings that allow you to feel truly "off the grid." For groups or families, the bunkhouse is an excellent, budget-friendly choice that provides the essential comforts of a fridge and microwave while keeping you close to the common bathroom facilities.

It is also worth choosing the ranch for its strategic location as a base for river adventures. The staff's willingness to help with the logistics of getting your vehicle to a pickup point makes a day of kayaking on the Allegheny River much more accessible. Furthermore, for those who value clean facilities, the "renewed" look of the showers and restrooms is a major draw. Whether you are there for the challenging 12-mile wilderness loop or a simple weekend of campfire cooking, Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch delivers an authentic Pennsylvania forest experience that is both professional and deeply personal. It is a place where the trails are so well-marked you can't get lost, but the beauty is so vast you'll never want to leave.

I absolutely Love The Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch in Tidioute, PA.First time camping all alone with my horse and the ranch was beautiful and the campground hosts were so helpful and it made me feel safe to go off trail riding for hours and know my camp was secure and that someone would know what trail I took and be aware that I was out there alone. It certainly isn't their job to do so but it gave me an extra layer of confidence. The trails were so we'll marked though, a rider or hike could not get lost there. So many improvements have been made in the years since I saw the ranch last. The laundry was a great addition. And the individual restroom/shower rooms were extremely clean and modem.I love that I could buy ice and firewood there at a very reasonable price.Washrack to clean off my horse after riding. The sites were clean and shaded. I chose an electric site for my 7 days there but the primitive sites are gorgeous, and either deep shade, sunny or a combination of both. There was an event there at the rodeo arena the Saturday I was there and the grounds there are excellent. The staff really go out of there was to be helpful and make sure everyone has a good experience.I could have even gone kayaking if I wasn't so busy riding. The campground has 6 kayaks and if the weather and the river is safe, the staff is willing to help out with the logistics of getting your vehicle to the pickup point and you to the launch. This whole campground has been renewed and a new energy and look to it. It will be one of my favorite places to ride now. Check em out!

The property is quite big. It has only one cabin and one bunkhouse, both have porches, but only the cabin has bathroom and kitchen. Nevertheless, the commom bathroom is very clean and the bunkhouse sleeps 4, has fridge, microwave and is very cheap. There are some horse trails and walking trails in the property, they are very pretty. Also, the owners answer very fast for booking!

Just visited the ranch for the first time. The hostess (Sharon) could not have been nicer to us. Anything we needed she was there for us. The trails we got to ride were beautiful. The ranch itself is very accommodating and they also hold special events. So looking forward to going back. Thanks again for everything!
