Highbanks Campground Introduce
For residents of the New York region seeking a true wilderness retreat with the comforts of modern amenities, Highbanks Campground in Steamburg offers a premier destination. Located in the southwestern corner of the state, this facility is uniquely owned and operated by the Seneca Nation of Indians. It is perched on a scenic ridge overlooking the vast Allegheny Reservoir, providing guests with breathtaking panoramic views that are rare to find in traditional inland campgrounds. Whether you are a local traveler looking for a weekend getaway or a long-term camper seeking a seasonal home, Highbanks provides a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by thousands of acres of protected forest land.
The campground is well-regarded for its versatility, catering to everyone from primitive tent campers to those who prefer the luxury of a fully equipped chalet. Because it is situated on tribally owned land, Highbanks offers a distinct cultural and natural environment. It serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the "Enchanted Mountains" of Cattaraugus County. Visitors from across New York often remark on the refreshing lack of urban noise, replaced instead by the sounds of the surrounding woods and the gentle breeze coming off the reservoir. The property is designed to be a community-centric space where families can gather for picnics, reunions, and outdoor celebrations.
Accessibility and location are key factors that make Highbanks a top choice for New Yorkers. It is situated at 1370 W Bank Perimeter Rd in Steamburg, conveniently accessible via NY-394 and Interstate 87. The campground is designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking, and restroom facilities to ensure that all members of the family can enjoy the outdoor experience. Its location on the western bank of the reservoir also means it is just a short drive from other regional attractions, including the Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino and the extensive trail systems of Allegany State Park.

What makes Highbanks Campground worth choosing is the unique combination of breathtaking geography and family-oriented amenities. Unlike many state-run facilities, the private management by the Seneca Nation allows for a personal touch, such as the convenience of firewood delivery and the maintenance of a heated pool that extends the swimming season. It is particularly well-suited for families with children, offering a safe environment where kids can enjoy "kid-friendly" hikes and various playground activities. The presence of both older rustic cabins and brand-new deluxe chalets means there is an accommodation level for every budget and preference.
Furthermore, its status as a pet-friendly location—where dogs are allowed—makes it a top choice for New York pet owners who don't want to leave their furry friends behind. The spaciousness of the sites allows for a degree of privacy that is often missing in more crowded commercial parks. Whether you are there to fish the deep waters of the Allegheny Reservoir, hike the rugged trails of Western New York, or simply relax by a campfire with a view of the water, Highbanks provides a high-quality outdoor experience that represents the best of the region's natural beauty. It is a place where traditions are started and where the majesty of the New York wilderness is always on full display.

Very nice pool! Some Cabins were brand new, some on the older side. I got an older one and was still not disappointed. Lots of bathrooms around for those with out a restroom. Delivered us some fire wood also! 5 stars.
Good place cabin could definitely be great. Very clean when walking in (but a friend's family in the cabin next door had a BIG/SMALL 😉 PROBLEM), bathroom surprisingly big (for a cabin) we had 4 twin beds MATTRESS not on twin bed frames, the mattress hung over the side (are group had 6 cabins and this appear to be an issue in cabin 20 BUT on the plus the bed frames were made of heavy steel) HUGE ISSUE he had was water pressure was very inconsistent. I was their for an event were the main reason we stayed here was a shower and was very lucky we had water pressure because that night when we got back it was literally a drip coming out the shower head and the other issue LOCK. Your cabin isn't locked when u get there and u can't lock your cabin. We had a croquet set with us so we could use the stick at night in the sliding door. We had young ladies in are group that had no way to lock their cabin at night. we were there for 4 days and for an event so we had to leave the camp grounds. we had some expensive things with us but had equipment that us had to risk it.
Only two issues. 1. The computer messed up or there was an office error with a rezzo, but they immediately called when they found out and were ready to deal with it however, and they not only got us another cabin, bit an UPGRADE! THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS WAS MY FIRST EVER VACATION, EVER. WITH A FAMILY. Problem 2. At night there were some CRAZY large bee/wasp trio flying around...they were as large as my thumb. I will include a photo if I can. Seriously. These things are (expletive deleted) huge. No one's really here at this time so it's kinda...dead giving it the perfect spooky feel. I love it here.
I loved staying here. The Campground had Great staff and friendly service. They helped me right away when I showed up after the office was closed. Brought fire wood to my site and were very accommodating and informative of the area. The cabin was clean and more spacious than they looked and they keep the showers pretty clean. The views are awesome and there is a boat ramp located at the campground. The cabins range from rustic to fully equipped and there are quite a few to choose from. By far one of my favorite Campgrounds I've ever stayed in. Get a cabin by the edge for a nice view of the river and mountains.
Really nice place to camp! The luxury cabin was so cozy and spacious. I just wish you could lock the outside door it freaked me out a little bit to have it open at night. But we had a fun girls weekend and I will definitely be coming back!
