J Loop Tent Sites Entrance Foot Path Introduce
For outdoor enthusiasts in the Maryland region, the J Loop Tent Sites Entrance Foot Path at Assateague State Park represents the pinnacle of beachfront camping. Located on a breathtaking barrier island just south of Ocean City, this specific area of the park is tailored for those who crave a primitive and immersive connection with the Atlantic coast. Unlike more modernized campgrounds, the J Loop is celebrated for its proximity to the dunes, offering campers the unique opportunity to fall asleep to the rhythmic sound of crashing waves and wake up to the sight of wild horses grazing just outside their tents.
The J Loop is specifically designated for tent camping, preserving a quiet and rustic atmosphere that is often lost in high-traffic RV parks. The entrance foot path serves as the gateway to this coastal sanctuary, leading visitors through a landscape defined by salt-scrub vegetation, shifting sands, and the expansive Maryland sky. While the environment can be rugged and exposed to the elements, the reward is an unparalleled sense of solitude and natural beauty. It is a place where Maryland locals come to unplug, witness spectacular sunrises over the ocean, and experience one of the few remaining wild coastal stretches in the Mid-Atlantic.
The J Loop Tent Sites Entrance Foot Path is located at 6708 Ocean Dr, Berlin, MD 21811, within the Maryland district of Assateague Island. Accessibility for local residents is straightforward; from the mainland, travelers take Route 611 (Stephen Decatur Highway) across the Verrazano Bridge. Once on the island, the campground is easily reached by following the main park roads toward the southern end of the State Park loops. While the island feels like a remote wilderness, it is only a short 15-minute drive from the historic town of Berlin and the bustling amenities of Ocean City.
Accessibility within the J Loop itself is designed with the primitive camper in mind. A recently added drop-off car park has significantly improved the ease of moving gear to the sites. However, because the path consists of loose sand, many local campers recommend using pull carts with wide "balloon" tires or sleds to navigate the terrain. The foot path leads directly into the tent-only loop, ensuring that no motorized vehicles disrupt the tranquility of the camping area. This setup makes the J Loop an ideal choice for those who prefer "walk-in" style camping that remains within a manageable distance of their vehicles.
The services offered at the J Loop focus on providing the essentials while maintaining the integrity of the natural environment. These services are geared toward families and seasoned campers who come prepared for a traditional outdoor experience.

The J Loop Tent Sites Entrance Foot Path is worth choosing because it strikes a perfect balance between the wildness of Assateague and the convenience of the State Park’s facilities. For Marylanders who want the "real" beach camping experience without the hum of RV generators, the J Loop is the premier choice. The sounds of the surf and the immediate proximity to the water create a sensory experience that inland campgrounds simply cannot match. It is particularly valuable for those who enjoy photography or wildlife observation, as the horses tend to frequent the grassy areas around the tent loops quite regularly.
Furthermore, the J Loop offers a level of comfort not found on the National Seashore side, specifically regarding the availability of hot showers and better-maintained bathhouses. While the camping remains primitive and tent-focused, having a hot shower at the end of a salty, sandy day is a major highlight for many families. Choosing this loop means you get the best of both worlds: the raw beauty of a barrier island and the reliable infrastructure of the Maryland State Park system. Whether you are hunting for ghost crabs at night or enjoying S'mores by a fire, the J Loop provides an authentic Maryland shore adventure that creates lifelong memories.

A chance to go on the primitive side of camping with the sounds of the surf for ambience and easy beach access. We camp at the J Loop in May (five years in a row so far), so we avoid the green heads biting flies, but we occasionally have mosquitoes at night and flies during the day. As for ticks (mainly our kids walking around in grassy areas fetching a ball), we have had them 2 years out of five, so it is hit or miss. There are volunteers nearby by in I Loop that assist with the horses (keeping them moving along) and provide helpful input on the current state of affairs for the area.Phone signal is okay, but not great - especially the closer you are to the shoreline. If there is any chance of a storm during your stay I suggest you go extra on the weight of tent anchoring such as the sandbags that come with a canopy arrangement, as the sand is loose here and small/thin basic tent stakes will not work here. Walmart has heavy duty black steel ones that work well, but the sand bags help a lot too of course. If you forget such things, using your tent bag and tent polls bags as sand weights are good options. Also when a threat of a storm is active, I add an extra tarp over the tent's rainfly due to the strong winds often associated with storms (intense here) and basic breezy beach conditions.A screen house works better than a canopy over the picnic table - reason is flying insects. Bug spray and sunscreen are essential. This area can get hot and humid, so I recommend battery operated fans. Solar lights are great to use at night. We bring our Solo Stove and inert it in the fire ring. We have a grate for it and cook on it too.Hauling your gear back and forth can be slow - the recently added drop off car park helps a lot. We use a pull cart that digs into the loose sand and is an effort to use, but still it is quicker than not using it.Wildlife can show up at any time. Do NOT leave foods out unattended nor at night. We use strong coolers with bear resistant straps (e.g., Yeti). There is a locking storage compartment built into the picnic table, but remember the ants will find access to not sealed snacks and other foods.Stars can be spectacular here on clear nights as long you face due east. Ocean City is to the north and is a light up the sky bum situation. If you are a light sleeper, bring your headphones and have on your phone a white noise app. This is because there is a loud seabird here that might drive you crazy with its annoying birdsong, lol. We use a mix of inflatable mattresses and cots with sleeping bags and lots of pillows. We bring food cooking, but we also enjoy eating out -plenty of choices to the north. The Shrimp Boat is rustic and good for dinner. Dumser's Dairyland ice cream is good too after dinner. We camp here on the weekends, so Friday evening is usually pizzas and take out, but with a fire for S'mores. This is because setting up can be a bear, lol.
