Lake Towhee Camp Grounds Introduce
For Pennsylvania residents seeking a true escape from the digital hum and structured environments of modern life, Lake Towhee Camp Grounds in Quakertown stands as a "Hidden Treasure." Nestled within the expansive 552-acre Lake Towhee County Park, this campground is a sanctuary for those who value the raw beauty of the woods over the amenities of a high-end resort. Located in Haycock Township, just north of the more bustling Lake Nockamixon, Lake Towhee offers a quieter, more intimate connection with nature. It is a place where the primary sounds are the rustle of leaves and the calls of local wildlife, making it a favorite for local families and "primitive" enthusiasts who want to experience the Pennsylvania wilderness exactly as it is.
The campground is part of the broader Bucks County park system, known for its commitment to preserving open spaces and providing accessible outdoor recreation. Lake Towhee is specifically designed for the "purist" camper—those who arrive with tents, sleeping bags, and a desire to unplug. Unlike campgrounds that cater to large RV fleets with humming generators, Lake Towhee emphasizes a low-impact, traditional camping style. For locals from the Lehigh Valley or the Philadelphia suburbs, it offers a quick transition from urban sprawl to deep woodland seclusion, providing the perfect backdrop for building campfires, sharing family stories, and exploring the diverse ecosystem of Upper Bucks County.
While the atmosphere is rustic, the grounds are professionally maintained by dedicated county staff and rangers. The layout of the campground is particularly praised by large families, as the individual lots are significantly more spacious than those found in commercial parks. This extra room allows groups to spread out without feeling "on top" of their neighbors, fostering a sense of privacy and safety that is highly valued by parents with young children. Whether you are visiting for a single night of stargazing or a week-long immersion in the woods, Lake Towhee provides the space and silence necessary for a meaningful outdoor experience.

What is worth choosing about Lake Towhee Camp Grounds is the exceptional value it provides for families who want a "no-frills" but high-quality experience. For Pennsylvanians who find modern "glamping" resorts too expensive or too crowded, Lake Towhee offers a return to the roots of camping. It is worth choosing specifically for the size and privacy of its sites; you won't find yourself staring at your neighbor's campfire, but rather at the dense Pennsylvania foliage. The combination of a low-cost permit and the availability of hot water in the restrooms makes it an ideal "starter" campground for families testing out primitive camping for the first time.
Additionally, the campground's proximity to the Quakertown Swamp—the largest inland wetland in Bucks County—makes it a premier choice for birdwatchers and conservationists. Staying here allows you to be at the water's edge at dawn or dusk, catching glimpses of the Great Blue Heron rookery or the invasive but beautiful water lily displays. It is a place that demands respect for the environment and rewards that respect with profound peace. If you are looking for a weekend where the only "notifications" you receive are the sounds of the woods, Lake Towhee is undoubtedly the destination to choose.
Would you like me to help you find the current Bucks County resident versus non-resident permit rates for the 2026 season, or perhaps provide a list of the best fishing spots on Lake Towhee for your upcoming trip?

Customer Reviews
At first I didn't want to let it review because I don't want this wonderful campground to be damaged by messy and irresponsible people. But then I thought that there are many people, (families) who do not know about this Hidden Treasure. if you like camping without a lot of people, completely in the woods, no water, no light, completely primitive this is for you. if you like camping with all the utilities go for a resort hahaha. We are a large family and we like to camp together and not all campgrounds have large lots for large families like ours. Thanks to Elisabeth and the Ranger who are extremely kind and helpful and the guy who picks up the trash every day thanks although I don't remember his name. The lots are large and primitively well maintained, the bathroom has hot water and cleanliness is 7 out of 10. I don't give it a 10 because it has some cobwebs but we have to remember that it is in a primitive area so for me it's perfect . And I'm not going to tell you the price, but it's what big families will like the most hahaha. Mosquitoes 3 out of 10 if you have children take them repellent but it is not something that will bother you obviously I am speaking from my experience. Bring games for family and children, food obviously hahaha and enjoy and don't forget to leave everything as you found it.
Great little campground. Nice facilities. Well maintained grounds. Lots of spots. It wasn't very busy the weekend I went.
Nice private sites! The camp sites weren't on top of each other so you had privacy from the other groups. Site was flat and good for pitching a tent, restrooms were nice. Beautiful location, and quiet!
We had such a good time. Clean campgrounds, inexpensive and now crowded together.
Nice an peaceful. Well kept.
