Lone Oak Campsites Introduce
For Connecticut residents searching for a classic New England camping experience, Lone Oak Campsites has long served as a cornerstone of outdoor recreation in the Northwest Hills. Spanning over 250 acres in East Canaan, this expansive campground is nestled at the base of Canaan Mountain within the picturesque foothills of the Berkshires. Since its acquisition by Modern America Campgrounds in late 2024, the park has continued its tradition of providing a vibrant, activity-filled environment that caters to a wide range of camping styles. Whether you are a seasoned RV enthusiast looking for full hookups or a family seeking the rustic charm of a wooded tent site, Lone Oak offers a community-focused atmosphere where memories are made under the canopy of towering oaks and pines.
The spirit of Lone Oak is defined by its high-energy, family-oriented programming. Unlike smaller, more primitive campsites, Lone Oak functions as a comprehensive vacation destination. From the moment you arrive, the focus is on engagement; themed weekends—ranging from "Pirate Adventures" to "Christmas in August"—ensure that there is always something happening to keep children entertained and parents relaxed. The campground’s layout facilitates a "neighborhood" feel, where golf carts hum along the paths and decorated campsites showcase the personality of long-term seasonal residents. It is a place where local families return year after year, drawn by the clean facilities, friendly staff, and the simple joy of watching grandkids play in the fresh air of Litchfield County.
Lone Oak Campsites is situated at 360 Norfolk Road, East Canaan, CT 06024, placing it in one of the most scenic regions of the state. For local Connecticut users, the campground is remarkably accessible, located just a short drive from the Massachusetts and New York borders. It is approximately a 50-minute drive from Hartford and just under an hour from Waterbury, making it an ideal choice for both quick weekend getaways and extended summer stays. The primary entrance is located off Route 44 (Norfolk Road), a scenic highway that offers a smooth approach for large RVs and trailers. Once on-site, the check-in process is streamlined, and a spacious three-lane entrance helps prevent congestion during busy Friday afternoon arrivals.
The campground prioritizes inclusivity with a strong focus on accessibility. It features wheelchair-accessible entrances, restrooms, and a designated parking lot. Many of the main amenity hubs, including the camp store and the recreational halls, are designed to be navigable for all guests. For those who want to explore beyond the campground, the local area is rich with amenities. A Stop & Shop and Family Dollar are located just three miles up the road in North Canaan, ensuring that restocking supplies or grabbing a quick meal at a nearby diner like Collins is never a hassle. For nature lovers, the proximity to Haystack Mountain State Park and the spectacular 60-foot Great Falls on the Housatonic River provides endless opportunities for local exploration.

Lone Oak Campsites is worth choosing for those who want a "resort-style" camping experience without leaving the borders of Connecticut. The sheer volume of amenities ensures that boredom is never an issue, especially for families with children. The ability to rent a golf cart and explore the 250-acre property adds a layer of fun and convenience that sets this park apart from more traditional, low-service campsites. Furthermore, the cleanliness of the bathhouses and the professionalism of the staff—who are often seen actively maintaining the grounds and assisting guests—provide a level of comfort that makes the outdoor lifestyle accessible even to those who may be new to camping.
Another reason this destination stands out is its deep connection to the local community and the surrounding landscape. By staying at Lone Oak, you are perfectly positioned to enjoy the best of the Litchfield Hills, from world-class fly fishing on the Housatonic to the charming boutiques of Norfolk and Salisbury. While the presence of local wildlife like black bears is a reality of camping in the Northwest region, it also serves as a reminder of the authentic wilderness that surrounds this well-managed park. For anyone seeking a balance of high-end recreational facilities and the raw beauty of the Connecticut highlands, Lone Oak Campsites remains one of the premier choices for making lasting family memories.

What a fun time I had with my family at Lone Oaks! I stayed in the Birches cabin with my two friends while my daughters and their families tent camped next to me in the two spots directly next to us. There was so much for us and the grandkids to do !We loved the playground, the dodge ball games, sharks and minnows, the pool party (two of the grandkids won a prize!) the hayride and the camp store! It was fun to get a golf cart and drive around and see all the ways campers decorate their sites. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The staff is friendly and helpful. The camp store carries ice $3 and firewood $8 ..The Birches cabin itself was just the right size.. a full bed and two sets of bunks. You’ll need to bring your own bedding, but we just each brought a sleeping bag and a pillow. There were plenty of plugs for charging phones etc. we brought an air fryer and a crock pot and an extra fan. There is a small fridge and a coffee pot, a toaster and a microwave.Stop and Shop is just three miles up the road, with a Family Dollar next to it.. there’s a McDonald’s not far past that.. and a cute diner called Collins. We discovered a BIG vintage/thrift store a little past that called FLEA AT 99 .. and down the road a yummy smoothie place called HOMEGROWN! The chai cinnamon protein smoothie is delicious! They are both on Railroad Street.I truly had so much fun with my friends and family ! Seeing the grandkids laughing and playing and enjoying just being outside making memories was the best part !We can’t wait to come back and do it again!
We stayed here from Friday, August 8th through Monday, August 11th (with a 2 pm checkout).Positives:• Staff was friendly and helpful.• Pool was clean and never overcrowded.Negatives:• Tent sites are located in the far back wooded area, which is fine in itself — but with what seemed like 50+ tent sites, there’s only one nearby bathhouse with 3 toilet stalls and 2 shower stalls. That’s nowhere near enough. We sometimes waited an hour just to shower, which is extremely difficult with young kids. The shower stalls are very small, making it hard to wash children, and while it’s 25¢ for 8 minutes of hot water, ours wasn’t actually hot.• Only a couple of porta-potties are available in the tent area, but they were full, smelled terrible, and the one nearest to us wouldn’t even latch shut.• The biggest issue: bears. Nowhere on the website, during booking, or on-site signage did it mention that bears regularly roam the campground. This wasn’t a rare “once-in-a-while” sighting — they came through multiple times a day and night, right onto our site. On our last night, around 3:30 am, a bear brushed against my tent while my 6-year-old and I were inside. It then tried to get into our gazebo area (where there was no food — only a cooler with ice and water). This was terrifying, and made it impossible to relax or let the kids play freely.• Staff members admitted they’re aware of the bear problem, and we saw them chasing bears away with golf carts, yet it’s not disclosed to guests in advance.Because of the bear incident Sunday night into Monday morning, we ended up packing up first thing Monday instead of staying until the 2 pm checkout. We essentially lost the last day we paid for and spent the whole weekend on edge, unable to fully relax or let the kids enjoy themselves.Camping in the woods comes with wildlife, and we understand that — but frequent, bold bear encounters without warning or proper prevention measures are unacceptable, especially for families with children. Sadly, while the staff and pool were nice, the bathroom situation and constant bear presence made our stay stressful instead of relaxing, and we won’t be returning.
Had an amazing week camping with my family, everyone is so kind here! We tented and the tent loop is pretty and well laid out and tucked far away from the camper generator noise/lights etc. The group events are held pretty often daily and low pressure to hop in and out of. Having the on site convenience store with basic food items hot and cold were great in a pinch! Rent a golf cart, worth the cost, exploring in it with my 7 and 10 year old daughters was a highlight! Riding bikes around was great too, lots to see! The creek, pool and hot tub were clean and inviting. The playground and pond were nice hangs as well. I’ll be back
STEWART LODGE R10 WAS DISGUSTING! DO NOT RECOMMEND, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN. We rented this unit for 2 nights in June. We had several issues that made our short visit very disappointing. AC wasn't working when we arrived and that was just the beginning. For $296 per night this was the dirtiest cabin I have ever seen. Mouse poop under the kitchen and bathroom sinks and in every cabinet in the kitchen. Mouse poop on windowsills and on the floors. FECES on the toilet! Moldy mattresses....filthy countertops, air vents clogged with dust overall nastiness everywhere. When two employees showed up at the cabin regarding the AC not working we told them about the other issues and they didn't seem to care. One worker quickly used the only dust pan and broom to brush the mouse droppings out from under the kitchen sink, more got on the floor than in the dust pan! It was kind of shocking how the condition of the unit didn't seem like an issue to them. Onto the next issue, no hot water which we didn't realize until late in the evening and then in the morning after contacting maintenance they realized the propane tank was never filled. A guy did arrive within an hour to get the hot water working. I went to the main office to discuss the many issues we had during our stay. I was told I would receive a call back from I believe his name was Frank, he never called. I reached out to the office again several hours later and was told via text that I would get 50% refund. I was disappointed that I couldn't even get the courtesy of a phone call. My credit card was credited $225 plus $71 credit to be used towards another stay LOL. I don't think i'll be using that credit unless I stay in a tent. Other than the unit itself, we did enjoy the pool and playground area with our toddler. Reflecting back on the situation we should have just left upon arrival because of the very obvious health risks within that unit.
We had a great time. Kids had a great time. I rented a Skyline trailer. The unit was decent but I was disappointed with some things I think could easily be taken care of. The AC units had mold in them. The furniture is basic. Recliner in my unit was damaged and had dog hair underneath. The bathroom was very poorly cleaned. They dont leave any cleaning products whatsoever. For 4 nights it cost me a little over $1000 with taxes ect. I would expect much more for that price. You have to bring literally everything you would need, pots, pans, silverware, bedding, anything and everything. There is a toaster and coffee maker. We really enjoyed our stay but was not impressed with the upkeep at all. Friendly staff and everyone on the grounds were very friendly. Its a beautiful camp I hope they can figure out how to maintain the rental units better.
