Oceanside Walk-In Campground Introduce

Maryland residents seeking a truly primitive and immersive coastal experience often find their way to the Oceanside Walk-In Campground. Located within the Maryland district of the Assateague Island National Seashore, this unique destination offers a rare opportunity to camp just behind the sand dunes of the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike traditional drive-in sites, the walk-in nature of this campground ensures a quieter, more secluded atmosphere where the sounds of crashing waves and the sight of wild horses define the stay. It is a place specifically designed for tent enthusiasts who value a connection to the raw, natural beauty of the Eastern Shore over the conveniences of modern RV parks.

The campground is a favorite for local families and outdoor adventurers who appreciate the rugged charm of the barrier island. Waking up to the sunrise over the Atlantic and sharing the morning with the famous Assateague wild horses is a hallmark of the experience here. Because vehicles are kept in a centralized parking area roughly 100 to 200 feet away from the sites, the living area remains free of exhaust and engine noise, fostering a tranquil environment. This "happy place" for many Marylanders provides a front-row seat to one of the most dynamic ecosystems in the mid-Atlantic, characterized by salt spray, sandy trails, and the untamed spirit of the coast.

Oceanside Walk-In Campground is located at 6633 Bayberry Drive, Berlin, MD 21811. From a local perspective, it is easily accessible for those living in the Salisbury or Ocean City areas, and it serves as a perfect weekend getaway for residents of Annapolis or Baltimore. To reach the site, travelers typically follow US Route 50 East to MD Route 611 South, crossing the Verrazano Bridge onto the island. Once on Assateague, the entrance station is just a few miles down the road, though visitors are reminded that an entrance fee or national park pass is required in addition to camping fees.

Accessibility is a priority for the National Park Service at this location. The campground features wheelchair-accessible entrances, designated parking lots, and accessible restroom facilities. Boardwalks lead over the dunes to the beach, ensuring that the shoreline is reachable for everyone. While the terrain is naturally sandy, the short walk from the parking lot to the campsites is managed via packed paths or boardwalks where possible. Local users should note that because this is a walk-in site, you will need to carry your gear a short distance, so utilizing a wagon or lightweight packing strategy is often recommended.

  • Tent-Only Campsites: 62 dedicated sites nestled among the shrubs and sand dunes, specifically reserved for tent camping.
  • On-Site Services: Seasonal ranger-led programs and a nearby ranger station provide information and safety guidance for visitors.
  • Restroom and Shower Facilities: Access to chemical/vault toilets and seasonal cold-water public showers (available mid-March through mid-November) for rinsing off sand and salt.
  • Potable Water: Running water is provided via centralized pumps and spigots throughout the campground loops.
  • Waste Management: On-site trash and recycling collection services help maintain the cleanliness of the National Seashore.
  • Firewood Sales: Locally sourced firewood is often available seasonally near the park entrance to prevent the spread of invasive pests.

The features of the Oceanside Walk-In Campground are centered on the unique "front-row" access to the Atlantic Ocean. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring with a grate, perfect for evening cookouts. One of the standout highlights for families is the "kid-friendly" nature of the area, featuring easy hikes and cycling lanes that allow younger campers to explore the island safely on foot or by bike. For those with four-legged family members, the campground is dog-friendly, provided pets remain on a leash at all times.

  • Wild Horse Encounters: Direct opportunities to observe Assateague's wild horses as they roam freely through the campground areas.
  • Boardwalk Beach Access: Easy-to-navigate boardwalks that protect the delicate dune ecosystem while providing a direct path to the water.
  • Stargazing and Soundscapes: Minimal light pollution and the absence of generators (which are prohibited in walk-in sites) offer exceptional night views and natural silence.
  • Barbecue Grills and Picnic Tables: Every site includes essential amenities for outdoor dining and campfire gathering.
  • Hiking and Nature Trails: Immediate proximity to trails like the "Life of the Forest" and "Life of the Marsh" loops for wildlife viewing and education.
  • Secluded Beach Areas: Located between the popular North and South beach day-use areas, the campground beach often feels much more private.

For more information or to inquire about seasonal availability, you can reach the Maryland District Ranger Station. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made up to six months in advance via the National Park Service reservation system.

Choosing Oceanside Walk-In Campground is worth it for anyone who wants to experience the "real" Assateague. While drive-in sites and RV parks offer more convenience, they often lack the intimacy and quietude found here. It is worth choosing because it forces a slower pace of life; without the hum of generators or the clutter of trailers, you are left with the basic elements of the coast. The ability to wake up and see wild ponies just outside your tent flap is an experience that simply cannot be replicated in a standard campground. For Marylanders, it is a chance to reclaim a sense of adventure in their own backyard.

Furthermore, the cleanliness and upkeep provided by the National Park Service ensure that despite its primitive nature, the campground remains a safe and pleasant place for families. The combination of affordable camping fees and the priceless value of an oceanfront "front yard" makes it one of the best recreational deals in the state. Whether you are coming for the world-class fishing, the unique photography opportunities, or simply to disconnect from the digital world, Oceanside Walk-In Campground offers a 10/10 experience that keeps local campers returning year after year. It truly is a "happy place" where the wild spirit of Maryland’s coast is preserved for everyone to enjoy.

We camp here every year and it is always a wonderful experience. Staff is friendly and informative. Park is clean and well kept. Campsites are spacious, and you can hear the ocean even if you don't have a clear view of it. Waking up to the ocean and wild horses is a dream!!! 10/10 will keep coming back. It is truly my happy place. You should check it out and make it yours, too!!!

We camped here a couple of nights and very much enjoyed everything. The site was nice and provided a picnic table and fire pit. There were 2 toilets, showers and water pump. The beach is quiet and didn't have tons of people there like at other beaches. It's a nice place to take your family and pets. Just gotta watch out for horses entering the camp site.

Alright, everyone is giving this 5 stars because it's a beautiful and pristine seashore. Fair enough. But let's be real for bit. We camped here for a couple of nights and, yes, it's beautiful. Sunrises, sunsets, and campfires under the Milky Way are all amazing. And fortunately you can expect those experiences with any properly planned camping trip anywhere else, and I highly recommend you do so anywhere else. That's because Assateague campground adds a couple of highly unwanted elements: gross bathrooms and ponies.First, the vault toilets. When you arrive on Friday morning they're nice (for vault toilets), but as there are 2 toilets for 20-25 campsites (or say 50-75 campers), it gets irritating fast. That means waiting on toilets all the time, and by Sunday morning those things smell like...well, you can imagine.Second, the ponies. Let's talk about the ponies. When you first arrive you are smitten with the wild ponies--they are magical, wild, free, and they make for quite the photograph. However, once you start cooking any meal at your site you realize that these are not mystical wild beasts roaming a pristine island. They are massive, aggressive squirrels that walk up to your table and literally eat the food off your plates and stoves while you sit there. Then once they are done with that, they eat everything else you happen to have laying out. We and our fellow campers around us could do nothing but stare as groups of ponies raided us one by one. And they come at all hours of the day, multiple times, through the day and middle of the night. Just as annoying, as the ponies move by your tent, they kick up all your guy lines. It was not fun whatsoever, and I don't know why the rangers have let the ponies become so aggressive. Someone is going to get hurt, and it's 100% the fault of the park for letting it get this bad. I most definitely do not recommend bringing small kids to this campground, because they will lose their minds watching enormous animals eat their food. So, drive through Assateague and take photos. But until the rangers start tamping down on the aggressive ponies, do NOT expect a pleasant experience.

We loved camping along the beach with the horses walking through the campsite. Watch out for goathead burrs. Our poor dogs were loaded with them before we realized the burrs were everywhere.

I drove by looking for wild horses. It seems like this area is where they hang out. Unfortunately I didn't see any, but I didn't realized people camp in tents here!! Not just in RV. Great idea!! There are very roomy restrooms in each area. Note, the toilets are not flushable. Just a toilet with a huge hole. I'm posting a picture I look by the beach to give you an idea how the toilets look.
