Phantom Island Campground #3 (dock) Introduce

Phantom Island Campground #3 (dock) offers one of the most distinctive outdoor experiences in the state of New York. Located in the world-renowned "Narrows" section of Lake George, this site is part of the Glen Island Group, a collection of state-owned islands managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). For New York residents looking to swap the roar of the city for the gentle lapping of lake waves, Phantom Island provides an immersive nature escape. Site #3 is particularly noted for its location on the northern point of the island, offering a perfect blend of accessibility to communal facilities and a sense of separated peace that is hard to find in mainland campgrounds.

Lake George, often referred to as the "Queen of American Lakes," is dotted with islands that have been a staple of Adirondack recreation for over a century. Phantom Island is a small, four-site island that sits directly across the channel from Glen Island, the administrative heart of the group. This proximity makes it a favorite for those who want the adventure of island living without being entirely cut off from essential resources like the ranger station or the island general store. The atmosphere on the island is friendly and communal, yet site #3 is positioned so that it does not directly face the busier Glen Island, providing a bit more visual privacy for campers while they enjoy the northern views of the lake.

Location and accessibility are the most important factors for any prospective camper to consider. Phantom Island is located at 33 Phantom In Narrows Is, Bolton Landing, NY 12814. It is essential to understand that this campground is strictly accessible by boat. There are no roads, bridges, or hiking trails leading to the island from the mainland. Most visitors from the New York region launch their vessels from private marinas in Bolton Landing or use the public launch facilities provided by the state. Once on the water, the journey to the Narrows is a scenic one, taking you past historic estates and through some of the most beautiful mountain-lined waters in the Northeast.

  • Accessible only by boat, ensuring a quiet environment free from land-based vehicle traffic.
  • Site #3 features its own dedicated private dock, suitable for one boat.
  • Located within the Glen Island Group, conveniently close to the Ranger Headquarters for check-in.
  • Short boat ride from Bolton Landing marinas and public launch sites.
  • Proximity to the "Million Dollar Beach" and other Lake George Village attractions by water.

The services offered at Phantom Island Campground #3 are tailored to a "carry-in, carry-out" philosophy, emphasizing the protection of the lake's pristine environment. While the experience is rugged, the New York State DEC provides high-quality infrastructure to support your stay. Unlike many primitive sites, the facilities here are frequently cited by users as some of the best in the island system. Because site #3 is on an island with only three other campsites, the services are never overtaxed, allowing for a cleaner and more personal camping experience. It is worth noting that there is no electricity or piped-in running water on the island, so campers must come prepared with their own supplies.

  • Dedicated wooden tent platform at site #3 to provide a level and dry sleeping surface.
  • Access to what is often described as the "nicest bathroom on the islands," a well-maintained vault toilet facility.
  • Standard metal fireplace provided for cooking and evening campfires (use only local firewood).
  • Sturdy picnic table located within the site for outdoor dining and gear organization.
  • On-site services via the nearby Glen Island Store, which offers ice, firewood, and basic snacks.
  • Ranger assistance available at the nearby Glen Island headquarters for safety and navigation advice.

The features and highlights of Phantom Island make it a standout choice for families and seasoned boaters alike. One of the most significant highlights for parents is the small, sandy, shallow beach located on the island. This beach is ideal for children to wade and play safely in the water, a rare feature for the often rocky shorelines of the Adirondacks. Site #3 itself is located on the northern point, which helps catch the lake breezes—a natural way to keep mosquitoes at bay during the height of summer. The site is also known for being a prime spot for "people watching" as boats navigate the channel, yet it remains shielded from the heaviest traffic noise.

  • Kid-friendly environment with a sandy, shallow beach area perfect for young swimmers.
  • Excellent northern exposure providing stunning views of the Lake George "Narrows."
  • Fantastic fishing opportunities right from the dock or the rocky points of the island.
  • Proximity to the "Mother Bunch" and other famous island groups for day-trip exploration.
  • A 14-night maximum stay, allowing for an extended summer vacation on the water.
  • Strictly enforced quiet hours (10 p.m. to 7 a.m.) to ensure a peaceful night's sleep for all.

For those ready to book their Adirondack adventure, reservations are handled through the official New York State camping system. Given the popularity of the Lake George Islands, it is highly recommended to book several months in advance, as sites like Phantom #3 are often claimed as soon as the reservation window opens. Please remember that pets are prohibited on the islands to protect local wildlife and maintain the cleanliness of the small landmasses.
