Point Comfort Campground Introduce
For New Yorkers seeking the quintessential Adirondack escape, Point Comfort Campground in Piseco serves as a premier destination that captures the rugged beauty and serene atmosphere of the North Country. Located on the southern shores of Piseco Lake, this campground is part of a historic cluster of facilities managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Point Comfort is specifically renowned for its tranquil environment, offering a mix of wooded and waterfront sites that cater to both seasoned campers and families looking for a weekend retreat. From the early morning mist rising off the lake to the vibrant sunsets that paint the sky over the surrounding mountains, this location provides a sensory experience that defines the best of New York’s outdoor heritage.
Originally opened to the public in the early 1930s, Point Comfort has evolved into a beloved "loop" within the consolidated Piseco Lake Campground system. It strikes a unique balance between primitive charm and essential modern conveniences. It is a place where legacy is important; many local families have been visiting for decades, drawn back by the friendly atmosphere and the high level of care provided by the on-site staff. Whether you are arriving with a tent for a minimalist experience or an RV for a more comfortable stay, Point Comfort offers a spacious and well-organized layout that ensures every visitor can find their own pocket of peace in the wilderness.
Location and Accessibility are standout features of this campground, making it an easy choice for regional travelers. Situated at 1365 County Route 24, also known as Old Piseco Road, the campground is approximately 11 miles west of the village of Speculator. For those traveling from the New York City area or the Capital District, the journey involves a scenic drive up the Adirondack Northway (I-87) to Amsterdam, followed by a trek north on Route 30 and West on Route 8. The final approach via Old Piseco Road offers stunning glimpses of the lake, building anticipation for your arrival.
The campground is designed to be inclusive, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances and dedicated parking lots to ensure that all New Yorkers can enjoy the great outdoors. While the terrain is naturally hilly and wooded—sitting at an elevation of roughly 1,660 feet—the primary facilities are clustered for easy access. Its position on the western shore of the lake also places it within minutes of some of the most popular hiking trails in Hamilton County, providing a perfect base camp for those looking to explore the deeper reaches of the Adirondack Park.

What is worth choosing when it comes to an Adirondack camping trip? Point Comfort is worth choosing for the traveler who wants an authentic "Old Adirondack" feel without sacrificing basic comforts like hot showers and a well-maintained beach. It is worth choosing for the specific location on Piseco Lake, which is often less crowded than Lake George or Old Forge, offering a more serene and private experience. For New York locals, it represents a smart choice where you can find large, wooded sites that provide a genuine sense of seclusion even during the height of the summer season.
Furthermore, the value of staying at Point Comfort lies in its versatility. You can spend one day on a high-energy hike up Echo Cliffs and the next day lounging on the sand or drifting in a canoe. It is an ideal spot for those who want to introduce their children or grandchildren to camping in a safe, staff-supported environment. The presence of dedicated staff like John and Sue, who are frequently praised by long-term visitors for their kindness and helpfulness, adds a layer of community that you won't find at more commercialized sites. Choosing Point Comfort means choosing a piece of New York history, a pristine natural setting, and a reliable destination for making lifelong memories.

(I went to "LITTLE SAND POINT" Campground NOT "Point Comfort"! My review below is for Little Sand Point. I only looked at site at Point Comfort when I left for home.) Looks like a fine little DEC campground but I stayed at it's "sister" campground "Little Sand Point" further along the road and LOVED it & will go there again! Great staff! Great sites! Hike up Echo Cliffs across road for great views of Piseco Lake!
Been going to Point Comfort for five years . John is the best guy ever and so is Sue ! So friendly and kind. Our gandkids love going their. They are the best always put people and their needs first love this campground and John and Sue!
This campground was exactly what we were after. Our site was right on the water so we had beautiful views of the lake right outside our tent. No cell service, no distractions. John Howard was the ranger during our stay and he is excellent. Nicest guy you could hope to meet. He checked in on us each evening and had dog treats for our pup. All of the other staff were top notch as well - always friendly, answered our questions, but also left us alone to relax! The bathrooms have vault toilets, but they were clean and much more pleasant than the latrines at rustic sites you can find. The bathhouse is down the road so you have to drive maybe 3 minutes to get there - but there's a bathhouse! And it's a really nice bathhouse! Yes, the sites are pretty close together so if you're looking for something where you have no neighbors this may not be the place for you. For us, it was everything we hoped for!
So peaceful and we were right on the lake. Kids had fun riding their bikes. Nice hot clean showers.
Great campground, John and all the staff very very kind and accommodating. Canoe/row boat rentals are super easy, the beach on the lake is very nice as well. Restrooms are abundant and well maintained. Cold running water faucets are scattered throughout the campground which is convenient. No service and no WiFi makes this an authentic camping experience!Only partially negative is that showers are about a 3-4 minute drive down the road which is ok, you’re camping! Some camp sites can be a little close to each other but assuming there are available sites and you wish to be more secluded the staff will move you without a problem if you ask. Overall great experience.
