Pooh’s Corner Introduce
For New York residents looking to trade the noise of the city for the gentle rustle of the Finger Lakes woodlands, Pooh’s Corner offers a refreshing departure from larger, commercialized camping resorts. Located in the world-renowned destination of Watkins Glen, this campground distinguishes itself by being a "small mom-and-pop operation" that prioritizes privacy and a personalized touch. Unlike massive parks with hundreds of asphalt-side sites, Pooh’s Corner provides a handful of carefully curated spots that allow visitors to feel like they have discovered a secret corner of the woods. It is an ideal retreat for couples, small families, or solo travelers who value a quiet evening by the fire over high-traffic recreational facilities.
The atmosphere at Pooh’s Corner is built on the philosophy of simplicity and nature-first recreation. Managed through platforms like Hipcamp, the site has earned a reputation among local campers for being exceptionally clean and welcoming. As the name suggests, there is a whimsical, friendly spirit to the property that resonates with those who appreciate the slower pace of life in Upstate New York. Because it is a private property, it avoids the crowded "parking lot" feel of public state parks during peak summer weekends, making it a highly sought-after alternative for those who want to be close to the action of Watkins Glen without being in the center of the crowd.
Pooh’s Corner is situated at 3315 County Rd 28, Watkins Glen, NY 14891, positioning it perfectly for travelers coming from Elmira, Ithaca, or Corning. Its location on County Road 28 means it is just a brief, five-minute drive to the southern tip of Seneca Lake, where the village of Watkins Glen comes alive with shops, restaurants, and boat launches. This proximity allows campers to spend their days enjoying the vibrant local scene and their nights in the total seclusion of a wooded retreat. Accessibility is straightforward for standard vehicles, and the campground is known for having parking available directly on-site at the sites, eliminating the need for long walks from a central lot with heavy gear.
While the site is rugged and authentic, it is well-maintained and easy to navigate. The entrance and parking areas are designed to be accessible, featuring a wheelchair-accessible parking lot to ensure all guests can reach the "Welcome Shed" and common areas comfortably. For New Yorkers driving in from the Southern Tier or Central New York, the campground is easy to find via Route 14 or Route 414, which serve as the primary arteries through the scenic wine country. The host's dedication to clear communication and local signage makes arrival a stress-free experience, even for those arriving as the sun begins to set over the hills.
- Private, wooded tent and car camping sites that offer significant spacing between neighbors for maximum seclusion.
- A dedicated "Welcome Shed" equipped with a hot water station, first-aid supplies, and a charging station for electronic devices.
- Individual fire pits at every site, perfect for traditional campfire cooking and evening relaxation.
- Hand-built picnic tables and comfortable seating arrangements provided at each location.
- A shared compost toilet facility that is kept meticulously clean and is located in a well-lit, safe area of the property.
- Firewood available on-site (often on a donation basis), saving travelers the hassle of transporting wood from outside the region.
- A pet-friendly environment where well-behaved dogs are welcomed to join the family adventure.
- Accessible parking facilities to accommodate guests with different mobility needs.
One of the standout features of Pooh’s Corner is its "Valley View" site, which provides a classic Finger Lakes vista into the surrounding valley without requiring guests to even leave their campsite. This visual connection to the landscape is a major highlight for photographers and nature lovers. Additionally, the property features easily navigable trails that allow guests to stretch their legs and explore the local flora and fauna without the steep inclines of the nearby state park gorges. The intimacy of the operation means the hosts are often available to provide insider tips on the best local breweries, wineries, and "hidden gem" swimming holes that aren't on the standard tourist maps.
The property’s location is perhaps its greatest feature. Being just four to five minutes away from Watkins Glen State Park means you can be among the first hikers on the famous Gorge Trail in the morning, beating the busloads of tourists that arrive later in the day. After viewing the 19 waterfalls of the Glen, you can quickly return to the peace of Pooh’s Corner for a midday nap or a quiet lunch. The campground also sits within the famous Seneca Lake Wine Trail, making it an excellent home base for a weekend of tasting the region’s award-winning Rieslings and craft ales. Whether you are there for the vintage racing at the International Speedway or the tranquility of the lake, the location serves every interest.
- Proximity to Watkins Glen State Park (approx. 4-5 minutes), allowing easy access to the legendary gorge and waterfalls.
- Minutes away from Seneca Lake for kayaking, paddleboarding, and sightseeing cruises.
- Small-scale, "handful of sites" layout that guarantees a quiet and personal experience.
- On-site parking that allows you to keep your vehicle and supplies close to your tent.
- Host-provided amenities like bug spray and local area maps in the Welcome Shed.
- Hammocks available upon request for certain sites, enhancing the relaxation experience.
- A safe, well-lit property that feels secure for solo campers and families alike.
If you are planning a visit to the Finger Lakes and want to secure a spot at this private retreat, it is best to inquire early, as the limited number of sites means they fill up quickly during the summer and fall foliage seasons. You can find more information or reach out to the management via their presence on Hipcamp or by visiting the site in Watkins Glen.
Address: 3315 County Rd 28, Watkins Glen, NY 14891, USA
Pooh’s Corner is worth choosing because it offers the rare "middle ground" of camping: it is more comfortable and personalized than a primitive backcountry site, yet more private and tranquil than a large public campground. For the New York camper who has "been there, done that" with crowded state parks, the charm of a small, resident-owned property is a game-changer. You aren't just a reservation number here; you are a guest on a beautiful piece of land that the owners clearly love and care for.
Furthermore, the value for the price is exceptional considering the amenities provided. Having access to a hot water station, a charging port, and firewood on-site significantly reduces the amount of gear a "car camper" needs to bring. The wheelchair-accessible features show a level of thoughtfulness that is often missing from smaller private sites. If you want a weekend where you can hear the crickets instead of your neighbor's radio, and where you can walk to a view of the valley with your morning coffee, Pooh’s Corner is the quintessential Watkins Glen experience. It captures the rugged, friendly, and scenic spirit of Upstate New York in a way that large-scale operations simply cannot replicate.

This place is a great little getaway. There's only a hand full of sites on the property & each one of them are nice. It's only about a five minute drive to the lake which has a bunch of things to do around it. Not to mention its a small mom/pops operation which makes it even better in my opinion.
