SF. Site #S005 Introduce
SF. Site #S005, located in the serene environment of Cresco, Pennsylvania, offers a quintessential primitive camping experience for those looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Pocono Mountains. Unlike modern commercial campgrounds that feature manicured lawns and concrete pads, Site S005 is part of Pennsylvania's state forest system, specifically managed to provide low-density, motorized roadside camping. This means that while you can drive your vehicle directly to the site, you are stepping away from the digital grid and into a world governed by the rustle of leaves and the calls of native birds. For Pennsylvania residents, it represents one of the few remaining ways to enjoy a "back-to-nature" retreat without the distractions of modern life.
The allure of this specific site lies in its seclusion and its status as a "blank canvas" for outdoor enthusiasts. Site S005 is widely recognized by the local camping community for its generous size, offering plenty of space for larger tents or small-to-medium-sized trailers. Because these sites are dispersed throughout the forest, you are afforded a level of privacy that is rarely found in traditional parks. You won't find rows of neighbors here; instead, you are surrounded by a dense canopy of hardwoods and the peaceful atmosphere of Monroe County’s highlands. It is an ideal spot for seasoned campers who pride themselves on their self-sufficiency and their ability to thrive in a primitive environment.
Location and accessibility are critical considerations for anyone planning a trip to Site S005. The campsite is situated near Cresco, PA 18302, nestled within the expansive tracts of the Delaware State Forest. Reaching the site involves navigating a network of state forest gravel roads, which adds to the sense of adventure. It is important for local users to know that the road in can be challenging; deep ruts and rocky sections are common, especially after a heavy Pennsylvania rain. While a minivan can make the trip with careful maneuvering, a vehicle with higher ground clearance, such as a pickup truck or an SUV, is strongly recommended. This remote location ensures that the site remains a quiet sanctuary, far removed from the traffic of the main Pocono tourist corridors.
Once you arrive, you will find that the site is well-integrated into the local geography. A small lake is located nearby, providing a scenic spot for children to watch for small fish or for families to enjoy the waterfront ambiance. Additionally, several hiking trails run close to the campsite, making it a perfect base of operations for day hikers or those looking to connect with through-hikers passing through the region. Accessibility at the site itself includes on-site parking, allowing you to keep your gear close at hand, which is particularly beneficial for those who prefer "drive-up" primitive camping where they can pack heavier cots or air mattresses for a more comfortable night's sleep.
- Motorized roadside camping allowing for vehicle access directly to the site.
- Generously sized camping area suitable for multiple tents or a small RV/trailer.
- Designated fire ring provided for safe, contained campfires (subject to seasonal bans).
- Heavy-duty picnic table available for outdoor dining and gear organization.
- Proximity to a central dumpster located at the ranger station for easy trash disposal.
- Access to nearby forest trails for hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography.
- Permit-based reservation system ensuring your spot is secured for your stay.
- A family-friendly environment that is noted as being good for kids and outdoor play.
The features and highlights of Site S005 center on its "off-grid" appeal. One of the most significant highlights for many campers is the total lack of modern utilities. There are no power hookups, sewer connections, or running water lines at the site. While this requires more preparation, it rewards the visitor with a true wilderness experience where the primary focus is on the environment. The site is known for being extremely rocky, a characteristic of the Pocono plateau, so experienced locals recommend bringing an under-tarp for your tent and robust bedding solutions to ensure a good night's rest. The sense of isolation at S005 is a primary feature, offering a level of quiet that is restorative and rare.
- Complete privacy with no visible neighbors, allowing for a secluded retreat.
- Located atop the Pocono Plateau with unique geological features and rocky terrain.
- Close proximity to a local lake, perfect for "kiddie fishing" and waterfront relaxation.
- Access to the Thunder Swamp Trail system and other regional hiking paths.
- Dark sky environment ideal for stargazing and viewing the Milky Way.
- Primitive latrine facilities located within a short drive or moderate walk in the picnic area.
- Frequent wildlife sightings, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and songbirds.
- On-site parking that accommodates high-clearance vehicles and trailers up to 30 feet.

The sites DO NOT have power, sewer, and water. I am not really sure why Google maps says they do. There is a latrine by the picnic area but the intention of primitive camping is to bring your own water and toilet. There is a dumpster at the ranger station at the head of the road to make trash disposal easier. The camping sites are generously sized and you won't see your neighbors, but they must be mowed on rotation or demand because ours was cut but the other ones were not. The sites are extremely rocky, so plan ahead for an under tarp for the tent and some appropriate bed solution. Since the sites can be drive up - you could pack large cots and air mattresses and be comfy. The road in is a gravel road and requires a vehicle with decent ground clearance. A minivan might do it with some careful driving but the ruts can be deep. I would strongly suggest a pickup until they get the ruts filled in.There is also a lake with small fish in it. Might be fun for the kiddos.A trail runs close to the camp site. You may see some through-hikers camping here too. Be sure to reserve your spot if you're planning on staying the weekend. For the price it's hard to fault it, and it's near several nice attractions.
