Tompkins Campground Introduce

For Pennsylvania residents looking for a tranquil escape that combines the rugged beauty of the Endless Mountains with the convenience of modern amenities, Tompkins Campground stands as a premier destination. Located on the north shore of Cowanesque Lake in Tioga County, this Army Corps of Engineers-managed facility offers a picturesque retreat just minutes away from the New York state border. The campground is nestled against lush forested ridges, providing a serene backdrop for those who want to wake up to shimmering lake views and the sounds of native wildlife. Whether you are a seasoned RVer or a traditional tent camper, Tompkins offers a variety of ways to experience the scenic Allegheny Plateau.

The atmosphere at Tompkins Campground is one of quiet camaraderie and outdoor adventure. It is highly regarded by the local community for its spacious, well-maintained sites that provide a sense of privacy rarely found in private commercial parks. As a federally managed site, it emphasizes conservation and environmental stewardship, allowing guests to enjoy pristine nature without sacrificing essential comforts like clean restrooms and hot showers. For many families in Northern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York, this campground has become a seasonal tradition, offering a safe and engaging environment for children to explore the great outdoors while parents relax by the water.

Tompkins Campground is located at 66 N Shore Ln, Lawrenceville, PA 16929, USA. Situated approximately three miles west of the borough of Lawrenceville, the facility is easily accessible via State Route 49 and Bliss Road. Its proximity to U.S. Route 15 (Future I-99) makes it a convenient stop for travelers from Williamsport, PA, or Elmira, NY. Despite its easy access, the campground is set back far enough from major roads to maintain a peaceful, remote feel. Visitors should be aware that cellular service can be limited in this valley location, which many find to be an advantage for a truly "unplugged" vacation, though it is wise to prepare accordingly for navigation and communication needs.

The facility is designed with inclusivity in mind, making it a top choice for campers with varying accessibility needs. The campground features a wheelchair-accessible entrance, accessible parking lots, and specialized restroom facilities. Most of the roads within the park are paved, and many of the RV pads are level and spacious, accommodating rigs of significant size. For those arriving by boat, the campground provides a dedicated boat ramp and mooring slips specifically for registered campers, ensuring that the 1,085-acre Cowanesque Lake is always within reach.

  • Full RV hookups including 30 and 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections.
  • Traditional tent sites and 16 specialized hike-in sites for those seeking a more rustic experience.
  • Modern bathhouses equipped with public restrooms and hot showers.

  • Group camping areas suitable for larger gatherings and family reunions.
  • On-site barbecue grills and picnic tables provided at each individual campsite.

The highlights of a stay at Tompkins Campground revolve around the diverse recreational opportunities provided by Cowanesque Lake. The lake itself is a hub for boating, water-skiing, and kayaking. Anglers frequent the area to test their luck catching muskellunge, bass, and walleye, with several fishing tournaments held throughout the year. For those who prefer to stay on land, the Moccasin Trail offers a four-mile scenic hike through reclaimed farm fields and woodlots, providing ample opportunities for birdwatching and spotting white-tailed deer or bald eagles.

  • Stunning panoramic views of Cowanesque Lake and the surrounding Appalachian ridges.
  • Spacious playground area featuring slides and swings, making it a favorite for families with children.
  • Dedicated swimming beach for campers to enjoy cool, refreshing water on summer days.
  • Dog-friendly environment where leashed pets are welcome to join the family adventure.

Choosing Tompkins Campground is worth it for those who value space, cleanliness, and a direct connection to the water. In the Pennsylvania camping landscape, it stands out for its high standard of maintenance and its "large-lot" philosophy, ensuring you aren't crowded against your neighbors. It is particularly worth choosing if you own a boat or kayak, as the camper-only launch removes the stress often found at public access points. For families, the weekend activities and dedicated playground provide enough entertainment to keep children engaged while parents enjoy the quiet of the Endless Mountains. Whether you are looking for a weekend of high-energy water sports or a peaceful week of reading by the lake, Tompkins Campground provides a versatile and professional setting that caters to the true spirit of Pennsylvania camping.

Great campground with amazing views of the lake. Sites are very spacious and clean. Restrooms are clean too. We booked P16 site and lake was right outside the site. Views were amazing and site was very clean.Cowansque lake is a big lake and we can drive boats too. It's a hike from parking lot to reach the campsite. Their is very limited network here , so be prepared accordingly.Highly recommend this place for a quiet, amazing camping experience.

We stayed in the Bench loop near the water with full hookup. Great place to paddle around with kayaks if you can avoid when the powerboats are out. Generally it was pretty quiet with friendly campers all around. This is a dog friendly campground so if you are not then you may want to avoid staying here. They had activities on the weekend for kids to participate in if you have young ones.

Lake access, clean, secure campground. Park rangers and host patrol the campground. The grounds are well kept and decent size with asphalt drive and parking spaces. Dogs allowed on the leash.

Nice campground on a beautiful lake. Had a blast kayaking and fishing. My only complaint was when our neighbors moved into the campsite next to us and placed a rope light around their camper that lit up the surrounding 12 campsights so bright at night that you could no longer see the stars and made it hard to sleep at night. I guess there will always be self absorbed people that don't notice there are other people in the world. I will definitely be back and recommend this place to others just hope your timing is better and hope the green people aren't next door.
