Trap Pond Introduce

For Delaware residents and outdoor enthusiasts, Trap Pond State Park offers one of the most unique and visually stunning camping experiences in the First State. Located in the heart of Sussex County, this 3,650-acre park is home to the northernmost natural stand of baldcypress trees in the United States. The campground itself is tucked away under a dense canopy of towering loblolly pines and hardwoods, creating a peaceful, shaded sanctuary that feels worlds away from the daily hustle. Whether you are a local from Laurel or visiting from northern Delaware, the park’s combination of rare ecology and modern amenities makes it a premier destination for those looking to immerse themselves in nature.

The atmosphere at Trap Pond is defined by its "magical" scenery and vibrant campground culture. Historically, the area was a source of rot-resistant timber in the 1700s, but today it serves as a critical freshwater wetland and a beloved recreational hub. The campground is nestled along the northern shore of the pond, providing easy access to the water while maintaining a sense of woodland privacy. It is a place where families gather for traditional campfires, morning birdwatching, and afternoon adventures through the swamp's "prehistoric" setting. For generations of Delawareans, camping at Trap Pond has been a rite of passage and a favored way to spend the warmer months.

The campground is conveniently located at 15702 Goose Nest Rd, Laurel, DE 19956, USA. Accessibility is one of its strongest suits, as it is situated just 4.5 miles off Route 13, a major north-south corridor through the state. This makes it an easy drive for those coming from Dover, which is about an hour away, or even from the beach resorts like Rehoboth, which is roughly 35 miles to the east. The entrance to the campground is well-marked, and the roads leading into the park are paved and wide enough to accommodate large RVs and trailers without difficulty.

Upon arrival, visitors will find that the campground is laid out in five distinct wooded loops, each catering to different camping styles. The parking lots are spacious, and the park office is centrally located to assist with check-in and information. For those using the day-use areas or trails on the opposite side of the pond, the address is 33587 Bald Cypress Lane, though the campground itself maintains its own dedicated entrance to ensure privacy and security for overnight guests. The local town of Laurel is just a few minutes away, offering grocery stores and local dining for those who may have forgotten essentials or want to explore the historic nearby community.

Trap Pond State Park is a full-service facility that provides a comprehensive range of services to ensure every camper, from the rugged tent-dweller to the luxury RVer, has a comfortable stay. The park staff is known for being professional and helpful, often providing guided tours and educational programs that enrich the visiting experience. The services offered include:

  • 142 campsites in total, including 129 sites equipped with water and electrical hookups (30 and 50 amp) suitable for RVs and trailers.
  • Dedicated primitive, walk-in tent sites (Loop E) and a unique island walk-in site for those seeking a more secluded experience.
  • Climate-controlled cabin rentals and yurts that offer a "glamping" experience with beds, electricity, and heating/cooling.
  • On-site boat rentals including kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats for exploring the 2.5 miles of designated water trails.
  • Guided 45-minute pontoon boat tours led by knowledgeable guides who share the history and ecology of the baldcypress swamp.
  • A well-stocked camp store and registration office providing ice, firewood, basic supplies, and park merchandise.
  • Sanitary dump stations and laundry facilities (located in Loop C) for the convenience of long-term travelers.
  • Educational programming at the Baldcypress Nature Center, featuring interactive exhibits and a 500-gallon aquarium.

The highlights of a stay at Trap Pond revolve around its incredible natural features and the variety of ways to engage with them. Voted as one of the most scenic campsites in Delaware by national publications, the park offers a blend of relaxation and active recreation that few other locations can match. Notable features include:

  • The Bob Trail, a popular 4.6-mile multi-use trail that loops around the pond, perfect for hiking, biking, and birdwatching.
  • The unique baldcypress swamp, which can be explored via water trails that wind directly through the towering trees and their distinctive "knees."
  • Extensive recreational facilities including a disc golf course, athletic fields, horseshoes, and volleyball courts.
  • The Baldcypress Nature Center, which serves as a hub for watershed education and features an 18-foot replica baldcypress tree.
  • Clean and well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and modern restroom facilities available in every camping loop.
  • Free bike rentals (available seasonally via the "borrow-a-bike" program) for exploring the park's 10+ miles of multi-use trails.
  • Pet-friendly accommodations in designated loops and cabins, allowing your dogs to join in on the family adventure.
  • A dedicated kids' playground and multiple picnic pavilions for group gatherings and birthday celebrations.

For more information or to make a reservation, the park office is the best point of contact. Given the park's popularity, especially during holiday weekends, it is highly recommended to book your site well in advance through the Delaware State Parks reservation system.

What makes Trap Pond State Park worth choosing is the sheer uniqueness of the environment. There is no other place in Delaware—or the entire northern East Coast—where you can kayak through a prehistoric-looking swamp filled with baldcypress trees. This ecological rarity creates a sense of wonder that is particularly captivating for children and photographers. The large, shady campsites offer a level of privacy and natural cooling that "parking lot" style RV parks simply cannot provide. The ability to switch between a quiet hike in the forest and a social pontoon tour ensures that there is something to keep every member of the family engaged.

Furthermore, the park’s commitment to accessibility, including the availability of Action Trackchairs® for visitors with mobility challenges, demonstrates a level of inclusivity that makes it a top choice for all Delawareans. Whether you are looking for a rigorous weekend of kayaking and disc golf or a slow, educational retreat to learn about the Chesapeake Bay watershed, Trap Pond provides a high-quality, affordable setting. Its proximity to both the tranquil Laurel countryside and the bustling coastal towns means you can customize your trip to be as secluded or as adventurous as you desire. If you are looking for a campground that combines scenic beauty, history, and excellent facilities, Trap Pond is undoubtedly the jewel of Sussex County.

Another adventure here. We took the afternoon pontoon tour of the swamp cedar forest. Diane was a wonderful guide with her historical and nature information. Leaves are not fully dressed in their Autumn display yet. Still we had a fun time.

Very nice campground with large site's. Easy to get in 4.5 miles off or rt 13. I wish the sites were a little more level then they are, but I've seen worse. The restrooms were decent with hot showers. The pond is large great for kayaking. Great hiking and Frisbee golf course. The dump stations were clean with plenty of room. I recommend camping here.
