Celebrating Rylen’s Birthday in Buffalo Lake, WI and at The Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells, WI

The Great Wolf Lodge

We arrived at the Buffalo Lake Camping Resort in Montello, WI on a Sunday, only to leave again on Monday. We left our RV at the campground and drove into the Wisconsin Dells to stay at the Great Wolf Lodge for a few nights. My sister really wanted to have a joint birthday celebration for my nephew, Benson, and Rylen. Holly had this idea months ago and I am so glad we were able to make it work. We met with my sister and her family and my parents drove in as well to celebrate the boys’ birthdays. Rylen celebrated his 13th birthday while his cousin celebrated his 5th birthday. Of course, Lylah joined in and enjoyed all of the festivities. We only stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge a couple of nights, but the kids had a blast at the swim park, arcade, dance party, and playing MagiQuest. We also brought the kids to the Timbavati Wildlife Park. This isn’t your typical zoo setting as the guests have more opportunities to interact with many of the animals they have throughout the park. The kids fed a giraffe, a bunch of parakeets, and held a baby albino wallaby! We were also able to enter into the kangaroo pen where we could pet and feed a ‘troop’ (Group of Kangaroos) of kangaroos. They even had a baby kangaroo that was seen playing with other kangaroos. It was great spending time with family, and we have plans to see more of them along the way.

Rylen’s Birthday

After we partied hard with family at the Great Wolf Lodge, we said goodbye and made our way back to Buffalo Lake Camping Resort. First stop, pick up Loki from Pampered Paws Pet Resort. Doodle does fine in the RV for a couple days on his own. The A/C was running while we were gone and I think he enjoyed some time away from the kitten. Since Loki is only 3 months old, we decided we better put him somewhere where he will be looked after. Pampered Paws was fantastic! Loki had his own room and toys all to himself. He apparently missed us though because when we arrived to pick him up, he was sitting on a cat tree they had put in front of the door. He figured out how to use the door handle and tried to escape! He was very snuggly after he left the pet resort, and the kids were happy to have him home.

Back at the campground we continued with the celebration! Since we were staying at a camping resort, there were more amenities and activities to partake in. On Rylen’s birthday, we let him decide how he wanted to spend the day. We started by playing a game of laser tag in the park (a gift from his grandparents). Then, we rented banana bikes for an hour and rode around the camping grounds. After that we had some ice cream at the resort store and then the kids and Colton went swimming at the pool. Rylen made a group of friends that were playing games in the pool. To end the day, Rylen wanted to eat at Pizza Hut. Unfortunately, their dining room was closed, so we brought pizza home. His last birthday he spent the day in a courtroom, so we made sure that his 13th birthday would be memorable for the right reasons.

Summer Storm

After all the birthday shenanigans, we were settling down and getting the kids ready for bed. We knew that there were thunderstorms in the area, but initially it seemed everything was going to miss us. Every so often I will have a local radio station on in the RV and I just happened to that evening when the severe thunderstorm watch alert sounded. We checked the weather on our phones and it didn’t appear to be anything terribly concerning so we continued what we were doing. A little later the radio alert sounded again changing the alert from a watch to a warning with potential for tornados. We checked the weather app on our phones again and we became a little more concerned. There were threats of flooding, hail, and wind gusts on 70mph! In a house, we would just go inside. In an RV in the woods, we became a little more nervous about the incoming storm. The bathrooms were not far from us if we needed to seek shelter, but thankfully it didn’t come to that. As the storm came rolling in, we lost our radio station and our internet became extremely slow. We brought in our slide to protect us from the wind and waited it out. Other than some flooding outside, the storm didn’t cause us any problem. We have heard some storm horror stories, so we are thankful we can report this one wasn’t a big deal.

Hello, my name is Kayla, and I'm a registered nurse from the Midwest. My husband and I have celebrated 20 years of marriage and are parents to two children. Our eldest, who has special needs, faced challenges in a traditional school environment. After exhausting all our options to support him, we chose to take a year-long break from society. We sold our house and most belongings, purchased an RV, and set off on an adventure across the United States. This year of travel allowed us to grow both individually and as a family.

My son and I both grapple with ADHD. I was unaware of my condition until it was pointed out by my son's psychiatrist during our first meeting. The most significant challenge I face with ADHD is communication. In one-on-one interactions, I manage fairly well, but when I'm nervous, upset, or deeply engaged with the subject, my thoughts become muddled, and my speech turns into a jumbled mess. Adding to the complexity, I have an INFP personality type according to the Myers-Briggs chart, which means I often find myself nervous, upset, or deeply passionate. To deal with these communication hurdles, I tend to fall back on silence, keeping my thoughts to myself.

Blogging has reignited my passion for storytelling, with travel as my muse, and helped me find my voice. Despite the irony of being a storyteller who struggles with verbal communication, I've found my voice through travel blogging and newsletters. This has allowed me to express my true, authentic self—a goal that has long been elusive. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all my readers for giving me a platform to be unapologetically me.

I would love to have you follow along in our journey as we navigate RV life, homeschooling and discover amazing places across the country!
