Saxon Harbor Campground and Marina
Travel Day Hack
Travel days tend to be long, tiring days. We spend our mornings packing up the RV, afternoons driving, and evening setting up at our new campsite, and buying groceries for the week. During our drive, I plan out meals for the week and make a grocery list. While I was searching for a store close to our campsite, I found a Wal-Mart twenty minutes away. I knew that Wal-Mart had pick-up services and why we never took advantage of that before, I don’t know. We had a long drive and I had time, so I shopped online for a pickup. We should have been doing this the entire time. After a long day of driving, taking the whole family into the grocery store for hours is hell. The kids are rowdy after being in the car, and everyone is hungry. This saved us SO much time!
Saxon Harbor Campground
This stop was for me. About four years ago, my brother, sister and I did a sibling guided camping/ kayaking trip near Bayfield, WI. We spent a weekend touring the area and kayaking to a couple of the islands that make up the Apostle Islands. I fell in love with the area and have wanted to bring Colton and the kids to see Lake Superior ever since. Colton was able to get us booked at a campground next to Saxon Harbor, about an hour away from Bayfield. I loved that we were able to spend a week near the harbor. I could see Lake Superior from my window! We walked around the beach daily, Rylen did some fishing, Lylah did some wading in the Great Lake, and we spent our nights staring at the beautiful stars. Lylah even made a friend with another kid camping across from us. I loved this place! The only complaint is that we needed to pay for the showers. We don’t run into that often, but it’s not the first time. If you ever find yourself camping in Saxon Harbor, bring plenty of quarters.

Apostle Islands
On Saturday, we first drove to Cornucopia, a small, unincorporated town near Bayfield. On my sibling vacation we had a picnic there and I thought it would be a fun, quick stop for the kids. We made our way to the beach where we filled our water bottles from the artesian well, scoped out the beach, then checked out the old fishing boats they have on display. After that we drove into Bayfield and boarded an Apostle Island cruise ship for a three-hour tour. *Queue Gilligan’s Island theme song.* It was a beautiful day to be on the water and the kids enjoyed the boat ride, as well as seeing the lighthouses and sea caves. There are so many things to see and do in this area that we will have to make it a point to visit again someday.
