How do we get mail?

The short answer is my parents. Since most of our bills are paid online, any mail we receive is sent to my parents’ address. Each week, I provide my mom with the address of the post office in the town where we’re staying. She forwards any mail to us at that post office, marked with our names and ‘GENERAL DELIVERY.’ Upon arrival, we collect it from the post office.

It’s important to note that if a town has multiple post offices, you should determine which one handles general delivery mail. We made a mistake in Utah, resulting in our package being returned. Another useful tip is to arrange for packages to be mailed to a new destination before the travel date. This ensures that the package is ready for pickup upon arrival to the new location. In case of any delays, this strategy provides a window to receive our mail. We learned this the hard way when a snowstorm postponed our package’s arrival until after we had relocated to another state.

We also use Amazon Prime for its two-day delivery service when we need to buy something specific. However, the challenge with Amazon is locating a hub close by. Even with a nearby hub, we occasionally face problems with the lockers being full and unable to accept new deliveries. On several occasions, we have had to drive for an hour to an Amazon hub to collect our purchases.

What curriculum do you use for homeschooling?

Homeschool - Asked questions about traveling

Our first year navigating full-time RV living, we utilized Shell Education workbooks from Amazon. Homeschooling presents its challenges, and despite my efforts, the children were full of questions, and I couldn’t be everywhere at once. The workbooks lacked explanations for the assignments, offering only questions and answers. Post-Christmas, I realized the children required more comprehensive explanations of their lessons.

Consequently, I introduced them to Khan Academy, a free online app. My daughter took to it immediately, and my son particularly enjoyed the Pixar course. However, monitoring their studies became an issue. My daughter began to focus solely on the coloring section and repeated assignments, occasionally sneaking off to watch YouTube Kids. My son was found skipping assignments in favor of playing Roblox.

After extensive research, Time4Learning consistently emerged as a top homeschooling program. We purchased it for the school year, and it’s largely effective. It offers a weekly curriculum, and I have a back office to track the kids’ completion of assignments. Their assignments and quizzes are graded, with the option to retake quizzes if necessary. We’ve provided the kids with a laptop, and they alternate between Time4Learning and workbook activities. The program’s setup, content, and curriculum are excellent, and I can monitor their progress, which is reassuring.

Which state is your favorite?

Utah tops our list, having visited 44 states, it remains a family favorite. What makes Utah so thrilling? We absolutely loved the terrain. The landscapes are stunning, offering numerous places to visit and explore. During our six-week stay in Utah, we explored the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Sand Hollow State Park near St. George, Zion National Park, Arches National Park, the Great Salt Lake, and Salt Lake City.

Despite our lengthy visit, we couldn’t see everything we wanted. We had to forgo Bryce Canyon due to extreme cold, and couldn’t venture further north because of heavy snow. We also missed out on hikes like The Wave, which requires winning a lottery to access. Although we didn’t win and spent two weeks in a Utah blizzard, it remains our most cherished state.

States that include an honorable mention include New York, Tennessee and Florida. I have a feeling Alaska will be on this list very soon.

About Author

Hello, my name is Kayla, and I'm a registered nurse from the Midwest. My husband and I have celebrated 20 years of marriage and are parents to two children. Our eldest, who has special needs, faced challenges in a traditional school environment. After exhausting all our options to support him, we chose to take a year-long break from society. We sold our house and most belongings, purchased an RV, and set off on an adventure across the United States. This year of travel allowed us to grow both individually and as a family.

My son and I both grapple with ADHD. I was unaware of my condition until it was pointed out by my son's psychiatrist during our first meeting. The most significant challenge I face with ADHD is communication. In one-on-one interactions, I manage fairly well, but when I'm nervous, upset, or deeply engaged with the subject, my thoughts become muddled, and my speech turns into a jumbled mess. Adding to the complexity, I have an INFP personality type according to the Myers-Briggs chart, which means I often find myself nervous, upset, or deeply passionate. To deal with these communication hurdles, I tend to fall back on silence, keeping my thoughts to myself.

Blogging has reignited my passion for storytelling, with travel as my muse, and helped me find my voice. Despite the irony of being a storyteller who struggles with verbal communication, I've found my voice through travel blogging and newsletters. This has allowed me to express my true, authentic self—a goal that has long been elusive. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all my readers for giving me a platform to be unapologetically me.

I would love to have you follow along in our journey as we navigate RV life, homeschooling and discover amazing places across the country!

  1. […] This week’s update, the kids officially started their new homeschooling program. Why did we pick this week to start school? To be honest, the kids were restless and driving me crazy, so it felt like a good time to get back to a routine. I had no idea when school started back in Sioux Falls, but I apparently picked the same week. Lucky guess on my part. The kids started a more structured program than what we did last year.
