Camp Greentop Introduce

Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Catoctin Mountain Park, Camp Greentop stands as a beacon of Maryland’s natural beauty and inclusive history. Located near Sabillasville and Thurmont, this historic campground has provided a serene escape for generations of visitors. Established in the late 1930s by the Works Progress Administration, it was one of the first facilities in the United States specifically designed to be accessible for individuals with disabilities. Today, it remains a premier destination for organized groups, youth programs, and anyone seeking a rustic yet supportive outdoor experience in the heart of the Frederick County mountains.

Whether you are a local resident looking for a unique group retreat or a family seeking a specialized camping program for a loved one, Camp Greentop offers a welcoming environment. The facility is managed through a unique partnership between the National Park Service and The League for People with Disabilities, ensuring that the spirit of adventure is accessible to everyone regardless of physical or cognitive ability. The towering trees, winding trails, and crisp mountain air provide a perfect backdrop for building community and making lasting memories.

Location and Accessibility are two of the most significant advantages of choosing Camp Greentop. The campground is situated at 15001 Park Central Road, making it easily reachable from major Maryland cities like Baltimore and Frederick. Despite its convenient location, the camp feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. The terrain at Greentop was specifically selected and modified to be level, which is a rare and valuable feature for a mountain campground. This level ground, combined with extensive accessibility modifications, ensures that the beauty of the Catoctin Mountains can be enjoyed by all.

  • Wheelchair accessible entrance designed for easy navigation.
  • Dedicated wheelchair accessible parking lot and designated spaces.
  • Fully accessible restroom and shower facilities tailored for comfort.
  • Leveled pathways connecting the main lodge, cabins, and activity areas.

Services Offered at Camp Greentop cater primarily to large organized groups and participants of specialized camp programs. The facility is designed to accommodate groups of up to 140 people, making it an ideal choice for school trips, environmental education groups, and non-profit retreats. During the summer months, The League for People with Disabilities operates a variety of residential and day camp programs, providing high-quality care and engaging activities for children and adults with special needs. The focus is always on independence, socialization, and the joy of the great outdoors.

  • Group rental of the entire facility for private retreats and conferences.
  • Traditional sleep-away summer camp sessions for youth and adults with disabilities.
  • Professional commercial kitchen services (requires a certified food handler).
  • Dedicated staff providing a high camper-to-counselor ratio for specialized programs.
  • Year-round weekend sessions including winter retreats and family adventure weekends.

What is worth choosing about Camp Greentop is the combination of its rich history, specialized mission, and stunning natural setting. Unlike a standard commercial campground, Greentop offers a sense of exclusivity and purpose. When you choose this location, you are supporting a facility that has championed inclusivity since 1937. The reviews from families emphasize the "genuine and caring" staff who go above and beyond to ensure every camper feels safe and understood. For many, it is more than just a place to sleep; it is a community where individuals can flourish.

The rustic nature of the camp is also a major draw for those looking to truly unplug. While the facilities are clean and well-maintained, they encourage a connection with nature rather than with screens. The lack of Wi-Fi and the focus on group activities like arts and crafts, sports, and nature walks allow for a mental reset that is hard to find elsewhere. If you are looking for an experience that honors the tradition of the great American summer camp while ensuring every guest is catered to with dignity and respect, Camp Greentop is the clear choice in the Maryland region.

I've been to this camp on three different occasions. I find this facility's to be excellent for a group. The kitchen is large and the lodge is excellent. If you were looking for a rustic experience this fits the bill. On the other hand if you're looking for the Holiday Inn you will be disappointed.

This is a great place with amazing staff, they do a great job taking care of people with special needs, I have not seen a program even close to this and if you have a family member with disabilities, I highly recommend you looking into camp greentop and the programs they offer, especially if as a care giver you need a respite.
