Campground Introduce
For residents of New York seeking a departure from the crowded, high-traffic commercial parks, the Campground located at Sprongs Bluff in Sodus offers a refreshing return to the roots of outdoor exploration. This destination is not your typical resort-style facility; rather, it is a place where nature is the primary architect and serenity is the main attraction. Nestled along the scenic corridors of Wayne County, this site provides a rustic backdrop that appeals to those who prioritize peace, quiet, and a genuine connection with the landscape. It is a location that invites visitors to slow down and appreciate the unique ecological beauty of the region.
Historically known as an old Girl Scout camp, the property carries an atmosphere of nostalgic charm combined with a sense of discovery. While many modern campgrounds focus on providing high-speed internet and paved pads, Sprongs Bluff leans into its "eerie but serene" reputation, offering a landscape that feels both adventurous and safe. Over the years, the site has undergone significant transitions to ensure it remains a clean and welcoming environment for local families and solo travelers alike. It serves as a perfect weekend getaway for those living in the Greater Rochester area or anyone traveling along the shores of Lake Ontario looking for a primitive experience.
Location and accessibility are important factors for any local traveler. The campground is situated at 7322 Sprongs Bluff, Sodus, NY 14551, USA. This positioning places it conveniently near the waters of Lake Ontario, providing a climate that is often tempered by the lake breeze. For those concerned about accessibility, the facility includes a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, ensuring that the natural beauty of the bluff remains reachable. On-site parking is available for guests, which simplifies the logistics of unloading gear for a weekend in the woods. While the terrain is natural and rugged, the layout is designed to be navigable for those prepared for an outdoor excursion.
The services offered at this Sodus campground reflect its commitment to a primitive camping philosophy. This is a destination for the self-sufficient camper who enjoys the challenge and reward of a minimalist setup. The management has implemented a clear structure to maintain the quality of the grounds, including a nightly fee and active oversight. Here is a breakdown of the services you can expect when visiting:
- Nightly camping permits available at a rate of $15.00 per person per night, ensuring the grounds are not overcrowded.
- Active caretaker patrols designed to maintain a high standard of safety and cleanliness throughout the property.
- Dedicated primitive camping areas that allow for a traditional "leave no trace" outdoor experience.
- Maintained walking trails that wind through the former camp structures and natural forested areas.
- Designated fishing areas for guests looking to enjoy the local aquatic wildlife.
- Access to swimming locations, perfect for cooling off during the humid New York summer months.
- Basic restroom facilities to provide essential comfort while maintaining the rustic feel of the site.
- Pet-friendly policies that allow for dogs to accompany their owners on the trails and at the campsites.
The features and highlights of Sprongs Bluff are what truly set it apart from other campgrounds in the region. Because it was once an organized camp, there are layers of history to explore, from old foundations to the way the trails are carved through the woods. The environment is described by many as a place of exploration where every turn in the path reveals a new perspective of the local flora and fauna. It is particularly noted for being "good for kids," as the expansive space allows for educational walks and a safe environment for younger campers to learn about the outdoors under supervision. The removal of old graffiti and debris has restored the site's natural dignity, making it a "beautiful and safe" choice for local residents.
In addition to the physical layout, the highlights of a stay here include the following features:
- Extensive hiking and walking trails that offer a mix of wooded paths and scenic overlooks.
- A quiet, peaceful atmosphere that is often missing from more commercialized camping venues.
- Abundant wildlife viewing opportunities, typical of the diverse ecosystems found near the Lake Ontario shoreline.
- A secure environment monitored by a caretaker, providing peace of mind for those camping in smaller groups or with children.
- Ample space for primitive setups, allowing campers to truly "unplug" from the digital world.
- A unique "eerie yet serene" aesthetic that provides a memorable backdrop for photography and storytelling.
- Dog-friendly terrain where well-behaved pets can enjoy the expansive outdoor space.

When considering what is worth choosing about this particular campground, the answer lies in its authenticity. Many modern campgrounds have become so developed that they lose the "wild" feeling that makes camping special. Sprongs Bluff preserves that feeling. It is worth choosing if you value the sound of the wind through the trees more than the sound of a neighbor's television. The $15.00 per person fee is a modest investment in the upkeep of a historic piece of Sodus land, and the presence of a caretaker ensures that your stay won't be interrupted by the issues often found at unmanaged free sites.
Furthermore, the variety of activities available—from fishing and swimming to extensive hiking—means that you don't have to leave the property to find entertainment. It is a self-contained world of exploration. For New Yorkers looking to escape the hustle of the city or the suburbs, the Sprongs Bluff Campground offers a safe, clean, and deeply atmospheric retreat that celebrates the rugged beauty of the Lake Ontario region. Whether you are there for the history of the old Girl Scout camp or the modern-day peace of a primitive site, it is a destination that promises a unique and rewarding stay.
Before you depart for your trip, remember to pack all necessary supplies, as the primitive nature of the site means you should bring your own water, cooking gear, and waste disposal bags. By choosing this location, you are supporting the preservation of a local landmark and ensuring that primitive, safe, and beautiful camping spots remain available for the New York community for years to come.

This is not a free camping spot. The graffiti and pictures of old buildings was from years ago and has since been removed. It is 15.00 per person per night. This place is beautiful and safe. The Caretaker is on patrol to keep it safe and clean. Primitive camping only. Lots of walking trails, fishing, and swimming.
It's an old abandoned Girl Scout camp and it's a cool place to go and take a hike. It's feels eerie but serene. Lots to explore.
