Curwensville Lake Recreation Introduce

Curwensville Lake Recreation Area is a standout destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the heart of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Spanning hundreds of acres, this multi-faceted park offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and structured recreation. Managed by the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the site is designed to serve as a comprehensive "getaway in your own backyard" for Pennsylvania residents. Whether you are an avid angler, a dedicated camper, or a family looking for the perfect spot for a weekend picnic, Curwensville Lake provides a versatile and welcoming atmosphere that caters to all ages and interests.

The recreation area is built around the Curwensville Dam and its 790-acre lake, which serves as a massive playground for water sports and relaxation. Unlike many state-managed lakes that impose strict engine limitations, Curwensville Lake is famous for having no horsepower restrictions, making it a primary hub for motorboating, water skiing, and high-energy water recreation in the Western Pennsylvania region. Beyond the water, the park is characterized by lush wooded areas, well-maintained athletic fields, and a community-oriented spirit that draws visitors back year after year for everything from quiet solo retreats to large-scale family reunions.

Location and accessibility are among the top advantages for visitors traveling to Curwensville Lake. Located at 1256 Lake Drive in Curwensville, PA, the park is situated just 15 minutes from Exit 120 of Interstate 80. This strategic position makes it easily reachable for residents of Altoona, State College, and DuBois, with drive times typically under an hour. The park is committed to inclusivity, providing a wheelchair-accessible entrance, dedicated accessible parking lots, and restrooms designed for ease of use. Once on-site, the layout is intuitive, with the campground, beach area, and marina all connected by a system of roads and trails that accommodate both vehicles and pedestrians comfortably.

  • Full-service RV camping with over 50 sites featuring electric hookups (30 and 50 amp available).
  • Designated primitive tent sites for those seeking a more rustic and traditional outdoor experience.
  • Three cozy cabins available for rent, providing a "glamping" option for families and small groups.
  • Comprehensive on-site services including a camp store for ice, firewood, and essential supplies.
  • Modern public restrooms and hot showers maintained to high cleanliness standards for campers.
  • Marina services including boat launches, seasonal mooring, and rentals for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats.
  • Five large reservable picnic pavilions equipped with electricity, lighting, and charcoal grills.
  • A 18-hole disc golf course with disc rentals available at the camp store.

The features and highlights of Curwensville Lake Recreation Area extend far beyond simple camping. The sand beach and buoyed swimming area are major attractions during the summer months, providing a safe and scenic spot for sunbathing and cooling off. For hikers, the park offers approximately 16 miles of trails ranging from easy, flat paths perfect for families to more challenging terrain for experienced trekkers. A unique highlight of this park is its dedication to being "pet-friendly," which includes a specifically designated dog park and a dog swimming area, ensuring that four-legged family members can enjoy the lake just as much as their owners.

  • No-horsepower-limit boating, allowing for motorboats, jet skis, and pontoon adventures.
  • Multiple playgrounds scattered throughout the park, including structures near the campground and beach.
  • Excellent fishing opportunities from land or boat for bass, northern pike, walleye, and panfish.
  • Sand volleyball courts and athletic fields for team sports and community events.
  • Frisbee/Disc golf course that winds through the scenic landscape of the park.
  • Observation opportunities for local wildlife, including a resident family of Bald Eagles.
  • Dedicated spaces for kids' birthdays and family reunions with barbecue grills and picnic tables.
  • Winter activities such as ice fishing and hiking, making it a year-round destination for locals.

For those planning a stay, it is important to note that the campground typically operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day, though the park grounds and boat ramps often remain open into the autumn. Reservations are highly recommended for holiday weekends and for the popular rustic cabins. Visitors should stop at the park office upon arrival to register and obtain any necessary permits. Because the lake is a flood control project, water levels can fluctuate, so checking the current lake status is always a good practice before heading out for a day of boating.

What is worth choosing at Curwensville Lake Recreation is the sheer variety of experiences available in one location. It is worth choosing for its rare policy on motorboats, which provides a level of freedom on the water that is hard to find in other central Pennsylvania recreation areas. It is also an ideal choice for families who want a structured environment where children can run between the playground, the beach, and the campsites safely. Loooove this lake park! It’s 5 hours from me but I came here for a Brittany rescue group reunion. It’s a fantastic dog friendly park, lots of space for gatherings and roaming around. Can’t be beat on a sunny day!
