Diehl Cabins/Campsites, Allegany State Park Introduce
For New York residents looking to trade the cityscape for a canopy of emerald green, Diehl Cabins and Campsites within Allegany State Park serves as one of the state’s most cherished outdoor retreats. Located in the historic Quaker Area of the park near Salamanca, this unique loop is distinguished by being the only section in the entire 65,000-acre park that offers a mix of both cabins and traditional tent campsites. This versatility makes it a favorite for multi-generational families or groups of friends who have different comfort levels when it comes to sleeping under the stars. Whether you prefer the four walls of a rustic cabin or the thin nylon of a tent, Diehl Trail provides a cohesive environment where everyone can gather around the same campfire.
The atmosphere at Diehl is defined by its deep immersion in nature. The trail runs parallel to English Creek, a meandering waterway that provides a soothing acoustic backdrop to your stay. Local campers often speak of the "Allegany Magic"—that specific feeling of peace that comes from disconnecting from cellular service and reconnecting with the rhythmic sounds of the forest. The sites here are carved into the natural landscape, offering a level of privacy and space that is rare in modern commercial campgrounds. It is a place where time slows down, allowing visitors to decompress and appreciate the rugged beauty of the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York.
Location and accessibility are primary considerations for visitors heading to the Southern Tier. Diehl Trail is situated just east of the Quaker Inn and a short distance from the Quaker Rental Office, making check-in a straightforward process for those arriving during business hours. The campground is accessible via ASP1, a well-maintained road that winds through the park’s picturesque valleys. While the "Diehl Trail" itself feels tucked away, it remains a central hub for those wishing to explore the Quaker area’s museum, general store, and amphitheater. The management has also ensured that the facility is welcoming to all, providing a wheelchair-accessible parking lot and facilities designed to accommodate guests with mobility needs, ensuring the park’s natural wonders are inclusive for every New Yorker.
The services offered at Diehl Cabins and Campsites are designed to support a successful outdoor adventure without stripping away the essential "rustic" feel that draws people to Allegany State Park. The campsite loop features 22 non-electric tent and trailer sites, while the cabin portion consists of 8 electric cabins. This setup allows for a wide range of camping styles, from those who want a minimalist experience to those who appreciate the convenience of a refrigerator and a gas stove inside their cabin. The onsite services are managed with a focus on cleanliness and safety, ensuring that even the most remote sites are well-supported by park infrastructure.
- Mixed-use loop offering both traditional tent sites and electric-equipped cabins.
- Comprehensive on-site parking at each individual site for easy loading and unloading.
- Bear-proof food storage boxes (bear boxes) provided at each site to protect against local wildlife.
- Public restroom facilities and a centralized bathhouse with high-quality public showers.
- Electric cabins equipped with refrigerators, stoves, propane heat, and cots for a comfortable stay.

- Pet-friendly environment where up to two dogs are allowed with proof of rabies vaccination.
The features and highlights of Diehl Trail extend far beyond the boundaries of the campsites. The proximity to English Creek is arguably the most significant draw, with many sites offering direct views and access to the water. This makes the area a paradise for nature photography and bird watching. For families, the park acts as a giant natural playground. Children can enjoy kid-friendly hikes that lead to fascinating geological formations like "Thunder Rocks" or explore the historic fire tower in the nearby Red House area. The absence of strong cell signals is often cited by guests as a highlight, as it encourages genuine conversation and a total break from the digital world.
- Direct proximity to English Creek, ideal for peaceful walks and observing aquatic life.
- Access to over 18 hiking trails, including the nearby North Country Trail.
- Campsite 21 is specifically noted for being exceptionally spacious and private at the end of the trail.
- Year-round cabin availability, including winterized options for those who enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
- Close to Quaker Lake for beach swimming, boating, and fishing during the summer months.
- Stunning seasonal foliage that makes the campground a prime destination for "leaf peepers" in the autumn.
- Well-maintained bear-proof infrastructure that ensures a safe coexistence with the park's resident black bears.
For those planning a trip to Diehl Cabins and Campsites, it is important to have the correct contact information on hand. Reservations are highly recommended, particularly for holiday weekends and the peak summer season, and can be made through the New York State Parks reservation system.

What is worth choosing when deciding on your next New York camping trip? Diehl Cabins and Campsites is worth choosing because it offers an authentic, back-to-basics experience that hasn't been over-commercialized. It is the perfect choice for the traditionalist who wants to sit by a creek and read a book, as well as for the active hiker who wants a quiet place to rest between treks. The fact that it allows dogs means you don't have to leave a family member behind, and the availability of both cabins and tents makes it uniquely versatile for varying group needs.
Choosing Diehl means choosing peace. It is worth it for the crisp morning air, the scent of the pine needles, and the opportunity to see white-tailed deer wandering near your site at dusk. While other campgrounds may offer more "bells and whistles," Diehl offers something far more valuable: the chance to truly disconnect and decompress in one of New York's most beautiful state parks. Whether you are a first-time camper or a lifelong veteran of the Allegany trails, Diehl provides a consistent, high-quality, and deeply scenic environment that captures the very best of what the Southern Tier has to offer.

Stayed on Diehl 21 Memorial Day weekend 2023. The best, most spacious & private tent site! Next to the creek at the very end of the trail. It’s farthest from the bathhouse, but there is a porta potty there (we brought our own). Use the bear box provided to store food & grill. We didn’t see bears but had raccoons trying to open our grill late at night, when we forgot to store it.
This was the first time I have camped in a tent, we always camped in the cabins. It was very peaceful and beautiful! The trail I was on is not too far from the cabins that we always get. I personally prefer cabins that have a table, cots and a propane stove inside. No need for all the bells and whistles in the newer cabins, I’m trying to take some time away from the rest of the world and disconnect. Camping here does exactly that, allows one to disconnect and decompress for a while. Not much for cell service while I’m the camp grounds but that’s probably for the best anyways. I absolutely recommend trying it out if you want some peace and quiet and can allow yourself to stay away from phones and other electronics for a bit.
Diehl 1 October 13-16 2023. Great cabin, bathhouses nearby and at one trail head of Bear Caves / Mt. Seneca. We rode bikes 1.4 miles to the trailhead, hiked the trail, then ended at our cabin and picked up the bikes with our vehicle. Next to the new Quaker bike path as well and new bathhouse!
It's a really nice location. Will come back again. Wish the beds in the cabins were just wooden platforms in could put my own camp mattresses on instead of metal bedframes with springs and plastic mattresses. Staff was super quick and helpful when our heat wasn't working.
Good spot for camping during summer and fall! Did the camping last week and it was pretty chilly at night. Would recommend bring extra blanket.
