Parallel Cottages, Allegany State Park Introduce
For New York residents seeking an authentic wilderness experience without sacrificing the comforts of home, the Parallel Cottages at Allegany State Park represent the pinnacle of state park lodging. Nestled within the expansive 65,000-acre Allegany State Park—the largest in the New York state system—these cottages provide a "full-service" alternative to the more primitive cabins found elsewhere in the park. Located specifically within the scenic Quaker Run Area, the Parallel loop is designed for families and groups who want to immerse themselves in the un-glaciated landscape of the Enchanted Mountains. Unlike seasonal campsites, these cottages are built for year-round comfort, allowing visitors to experience the vibrant fall foliage, the hush of a snowy winter morning, or the lush greenery of a Western New York summer.
The Parallel Cottages are managed as a distinct group of 15 fully equipped vacation rentals. They were designed to offer a "hotel-like" experience while maintaining a rustic, wooded aesthetic that honors the park's history. For locals, these cottages are a cherished destination for multi-generational trips, as they provide enough space for up to six occupants and include the modern necessities that make a longer stay feasible. From the wooden floors to the cozy porches overlooking the forest, every detail of these units is aimed at providing a serene basecamp for exploring the park’s legendary "Thunder Rocks," "Bear Caves," and the tranquil waters of Quaker Lake. It is a place where you can truly disconnect from the digital world, as cell service is limited, giving way to the sounds of rushing creeks and the sights of the Milky Way above.
Location and accessibility are key features that make the Parallel loop a top choice for travelers. The cottages are located at Allegany State Park Rte 3, Salamanca, NY 14779, within the Quaker Area of the park. For those coming from the New York region, accessibility is straightforward via the Southern Tier Expressway (I-86). Travelers typically take Exit 18 to enter the Quaker Area. The cottages are situated near the new paved bike trails and are adjacent to Quaker Run Creek, making them highly desirable for those who enjoy water views and easy cycling access. The park has ensured that several units, such as Parallel 2, are ADA-compliant with ramps and accessible interiors, ensuring that the beauty of Allegany is inclusive for all guests. Road conditions within the park are well-maintained year-round, though winter travelers should always come prepared for the region's famous lake-effect snow.
The services offered at the Parallel Cottages are what define them as "full-service" accommodations. While traditional cabins in the park require guests to bring almost everything, the Parallel units arrive stocked with the essentials. This makes the packing process much simpler for busy New York families. While the staff does not "make the beds," they provide the linens and ensure the unit is prepped for your arrival. Key services and provisions include:
- Provision of bed linens and towel service for up to six occupants, including pillows and blankets.
- A fully equipped kitchen featuring a full propane range and oven, refrigerator with freezer, microwave, and toaster.
- A complete array of kitchen tools, including pots, pans, silverware, dishes, and a coffee maker.
- On-demand hot water systems to ensure comfortable showers and efficient dishwashing.
- Year-round propane heating, allowing for cozy stays even during the peak of the winter season.
- A dedicated cleaning and maintenance team that prepares units between guest stays.
- Trash and recycling facilities located conveniently near the cottage loops.
- Access to the park's central rental office for key pickup and information about local recreational programs.
The features and highlights of the Parallel Cottages extend from the interior comforts to the natural wonders just outside the door. These cottages are strategically placed to offer privacy while still being part of the vibrant Quaker Area community. The surrounding forest is an old-growth haven, and the proximity to the creek provides a constant, soothing soundtrack. The loop is specifically favored for its easy access to the park's extensive trail network, which is world-renowned for cross-country skiing and mountain biking. Notable highlights include:
- Two separate bedrooms: one typically featuring a queen-sized bed and the other with two twin beds.
- Additional sleeping options in the main living space, including two fold-down futons or rollaway cots.
- Private outdoor space for each unit, including a charcoal grill and a fire pit for evening gatherings.
- Direct proximity to the new five-mile paved bike trail, perfect for safe family riding and walking.
- Wooden floors and large windows that invite natural light and offer expansive views of the wooded valleys.
- Close access to Quaker Lake, which features a sandy swimming beach, fishing piers, and boat launches.
- Pet-friendly options: Specific units (such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 13, and 14) allow for up to two pets with proper documentation.
- A short drive or hike to the "Old Quaker Store Museum" and the park's historic amphitheater.
For those looking to book a stay or gather more information, the primary contact point is the Allegany State Park Rental Office. The cottages are located at Allegany State Park Rte 3, Salamanca, NY 14779. Reservations are highly competitive and are managed through the ReserveAmerica system. For specific inquiries regarding key pickup or late arrivals, the park office can be reached at (716) 354-9121. During peak summer months, there is typically a 7 or 14-night minimum stay required, while the non-peak seasons offer more flexibility with a 2-night minimum. When deciding what is worth choosing, the Parallel Cottages are the clear winner for anyone who wants a "plug-and-play" vacation. They are worth choosing specifically for the peace of mind they offer; you don't have to worry about packing a stove or heavy bedding, which is a significant advantage for those traveling in smaller vehicles. The privacy of the wooded lots ensures that while you can see your neighbors, you still feel tucked away in your own private slice of the wilderness. For winter enthusiasts, these cottages are particularly worth choosing because they offer one of the warmest and most reliable lodging options for those tackling the Art Roscoe ski trails or the 90 miles of groomed snowmobile paths.
Furthermore, the Parallel loop is worth choosing for its location within the Quaker Area. This section of the park is often considered the more tranquil of the two main developed areas, providing a deeper sense of solitude compared to the busier Red House side. The ability to walk from your cottage to a rushing creek or a world-class hiking trail is a rare luxury. For New York families looking to build a tradition of outdoor adventure, the Parallel Cottages provide the perfect balance of rugged exploration and domestic comfort, ensuring that even the most "indoorsy" family member can enjoy the spectacular beauty of Allegany State Park.
In summary, the Parallel Cottages at Allegany State Park are a flagship lodging option for those who love the New York outdoors. They offer a rare combination of modern amenities, year-round accessibility, and direct access to some of the most beautiful primitive landscapes in the Northeast. Whether you are fishing in Quaker Lake, hiking through the "Thunder Rocks," or simply relaxing on your porch with a book, these cottages provide the ideal environment for a restorative getaway. If you are looking for a place where you can truly experience the "wild" side of New York while still enjoying a hot shower and a full kitchen, the Parallel loop is waiting to welcome you home to the woods.

Full service cabin in the woods, in the largest state park in New York! Stayed in Parallel 2 that is a full service with linens, ada compliant ramp, wooden floors and the old multi-color slate in the kitchen areas upgraded with a full propane range and oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, fridge/freezer, two bedrooms with two twins, a rollaway cot, futon, and double bed.Plenty of room for 6, the wooden floors aren’t in the best shape and there is a lot of built up dust on lighting fixtures and in corners. There is a broom and all linens, towel service for six, starter toilet paper, dish soap, paper towels, and an array of pots, pans, silverware, and kitchen tools. We had a colander, baking sheet, and multiple cooking pots, but no can opener! We got creative and asked the neighbors:)Outside there is a charcoal grill and fire pit, right across from the new paved bike trail and the rushing water of the creek.Great shower curtain, on demand hot water, and curtains on all windows! We bring table lamps to combat overhead lighting and the Parallel 1 & 2 cabins have hardwood that is in need of a refinish so you may want slippers or a floor covering.Very private, cozy, and absolutely wonderful for a getaway in the wilderness without cell service! If you’re concerned about location, look for a satellite map app, there is plenty of connection for satellites… take the time to enjoy views of the mountains and stars…
The parallel cottages are really great. Beautiful surroundings, well equipped and maintained. We always enjoy our trip! These cottages have a bathroom with shower. The kitchen has a stove and fridge, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. Sheets and pillows are provided. There is a queen sized bed in one bedroom. Two twin beds in another bedroom. In the main living space, two couches fold down into futons. Surrounded by nature. You can see the other cabins, but it is wooded, and the cabins are far enough apart that you still have privacy.
First time in the cabins and it was so much better than the green ones. Getting old but I'll be going back to them . Thank you Allegheny you're doing a great job
Great way to enjoy the park. Awesome to have a bathroom, shower, full kitchen, bedrooms...
The cots aren't very comfortable. It was nice not to have to pack bedding and cookware.
