Dover AFB FamCamp Introduce

For Delaware residents with ties to the military community, Dover AFB FamCamp offers a unique and highly specialized camping experience right in the heart of the First State. Operated by the 436th Force Support Squadron, this campground is a dedicated benefit for authorized military personnel, retirees, and their families. Unlike commercial campgrounds that cater to the general public, FamCamp provides a secure, efficient, and cost-effective environment that integrates seamlessly with the resources of the Dover Air Force Base. It serves as an essential resource for those visiting the area for short-term stays, transitioning during a permanent change of station (PCS), or simply looking for a quiet retreat near the base’s operational hub.

The atmosphere at Dover AFB FamCamp is distinctly no-frills and professional, reflecting its primary mission to support the military lifestyle. The campground is situated on the southern edge of the base, offering guests a front-row seat to the impressive operations of the airfield. For aviation enthusiasts and those proud of Delaware’s military heritage, the sounds of C-5 and C-17 aircraft are part of the authentic experience. It is a small, intimate facility that prioritizes utility and safety, providing a gated community feel within a high-security installation. This environment ensures that guests can enjoy their stay with a level of peace of mind that only a military-managed facility can provide.

Location and accessibility are major advantages for those eligible to use the facility. Situated on Las Vegas Street within the Dover Air Force Base, the campground is central to everything Kent County has to offer. Accessibility is strictly managed through the base gates, typically requiring guests to enter via the Main Gate off Route 1 or US-113. Once through security, the route to the campground is well-marked. Its position is ideal for travelers; it is approximately 45 minutes away from the popular Delaware beaches of Rehoboth and Dewey, and just minutes from the historic downtown Dover. For those interested in military history, the Air Mobility Command Museum is located just outside the base fence line, making for an easy afternoon excursion.

The strategic placement of FamCamp also means guests have immediate access to base support facilities. Residents are just a short drive from the Base Exchange (BX), Commissary, and the various recreational centers managed by the Force Support Squadron. This level of convenience is a significant draw for local Delaware military retirees who may want to stay in their RV while utilizing their base benefits. The surrounding landscape is flat and open, common for the coastal plain of Delaware, which makes navigating even the largest RV rigs straightforward once on base grounds.

The services offered at Dover AFB FamCamp are tailored to the needs of the modern RVer, focusing on full-service connectivity and base-wide support. While the facility is small, with approximately 10 primary sites, the services provided are robust. Key services available to authorized guests include:

  • Full-hookup RV sites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections.
  • Access to a coin-operated laundry facility located within the camp grounds.
  • A dedicated bathhouse providing clean showers and restrooms for guests.
  • Coordination through the Dover AFB Outdoor Recreation Center for equipment rentals and local information.
  • Pet-friendly accommodations, allowing leashed dogs to accompany their families (subject to base regulations).
  • Reservation management up to 90 days in advance for eligible DoD ID cardholders.
  • Year-round operation, providing a stable housing or vacation option through all Delaware seasons.

Beyond the basic utilities, the features and highlights of Dover AFB FamCamp are enhanced by the wider amenities of the base. Guests are not just staying at a campsite; they are gaining temporary residency on a premier military installation. This provides a range of highlights that are unavailable at civilian parks. The proximity to the airfield provides a unique "entertainment" factor as cargo missions fly overhead, while the community-focused design of the base offers plenty of space for walking and cycling.

Notable highlights include:

  • On-site picnic tables and elevated charcoal grills at each campsite for outdoor cooking.
  • A large, modern playground located directly across the street from the campground area.
  • Proximity to the Oasis Pool (seasonal) and the Eagle Creek Golf Club, located just a few miles away.
  • Walking distance to the Air Mobility Command Museum and its collection of historic aircraft.
  • Access to base recreational equipment rentals, including kayaks, boats, and camping gear through Outdoor Recreation.
  • Secure environment with regular base security patrols and gated access control.
  • Gravel and grass sites that provide a level and stable foundation for various RV types.

For those eligible to stay at FamCamp, reservations and inquiries are handled by the 436th Force Support Squadron’s Outdoor Recreation office. It is recommended to check current base access requirements and availability before planning a visit, especially during the peak summer months or during major base events.

When considering where to stay in the Dover area, Dover AFB FamCamp is worth choosing for its exceptional value and security. For military families, the price point is significantly lower than commercial RV parks in the region, making it an excellent choice for those on a budget or those staying for an extended period. It is particularly worth choosing if you value the convenience of having the Commissary and BX nearby, as this eliminates the need to navigate city traffic for daily necessities. The small size of the park ensures a quiet community where you can easily get to know your fellow travelers, most of whom share similar backgrounds and military experiences.

Furthermore, the campground is worth choosing for its professional management. Being under the oversight of the Force Support Squadron means that the facilities are maintained according to military standards. While the bathhouse and laundry are "no-frills," they provide the essential functions needed for a comfortable stay. If you are an authorized user looking for a reliable, safe, and strategically located base of operations in Central Delaware, Dover AFB FamCamp stands out as a top-tier option. It offers a rare opportunity to live within the military community while enjoying the natural beauty and coastal access that makes Delaware such a popular destination for campers.

Quaint little RV campsite on the edge of Dover & Dover AFB airfield. We traveled to the ends of the rainbow to get here (see photo). Very efficient, no frills area. Picnic table, grill, water electric & dump station provided. There is no wind block during storms & windy days. There is 1 washer ($1.50) & 1 dryer ($.25 for 5 min.) for 10 sites. There is 1 male & 1 female bathroom in the bathhouse, with 2 stalls, 1 locking shower & 2 sinks in each bathroom. No, benches or trash cans in the bathrooms. Showers, clean & nice. There is a huge playground across the street & plenty of entertainment nearby. The street between the site & the playground has a 25 mph speed limit. It is very common to see vehicles travel 40 - 50 mph (just eyeball calculation, not official speed).

Two night stay. Price was right. Our site was a mix of grass and gravel. Picnic table and elevated charcoal grill. T-Mobile had 4 bars, no wifi. A small bath house (you need an access code for the bath house but not for the laundry. Bath house was small and dirty - there was a hand written note on the door that basically said the Base/MWR did not provide cleaning staff for the bath house and it was incumbent upon guest to clean after themselves. Fair enough, but there were no cleaning supplies anywhere. Not sure who serviced the bath house with toilet paper. No soap dispensers or air dryers/towels. The camp site is located very near a runway so if you are a light sleeper, this might not be the right camp site for you.

What’s not to like?! Quiet, spacious, washers, bathrooms clean, near to base shopping, playground across the street for the kids and great walking path and open fields to walk your dog. Sure there may not be a pool or a very large laundry room - but for the price and peace of quiet we enjoyed we will definitely come back in the near future.

Although you must have access to Dover AFB to get to Famcamp, it is quiet and comfortable.... Didn't have any children with me, but there is a small children's park adjacent also! The Air Mobility Command Museum is nearby and we'll worth visiting!

Nice inexpensive place to camp on Dover AFB, located on the South end of the runway. The tent sites have little shade and no power, but a nice pagoda. The bathroom and showers were clean and only a short walk away.Cool place to plane watch when camping. Not so cool when they land at 0300 in the morning.
