Ecology Village Introduce
For New Yorkers who believe that a true nature experience requires a long drive out of the five boroughs, Ecology Village at Floyd Bennett Field offers a surprising and refreshing alternative. Tucked away in the southeast corner of Brooklyn within the Gateway National Recreation Area, this unique campground provides a specialized environment where the city’s urban landscape fades into a backdrop of grasslands, salt marshes, and secondary-growth forests. Ecology Village is particularly renowned for its focus on environmental education and group camping, making it a cornerstone for local schools, youth organizations, and families looking to introduce the next generation of New Yorkers to the wonders of the natural world.
The campground operates under the stewardship of the National Park Service and serves as a living laboratory for urban ecology. Unlike more traditional high-traffic RV parks, Ecology Village maintains a more rustic and educational atmosphere. It is a place where "beginner camping" is encouraged and where the quiet of the woods is only occasionally interrupted by the distant hum of the Belt Parkway or the call of a coastal bird. For local residents, it offers a rare opportunity to engage with nature in a setting that feels isolated and wild, despite being located just minutes from the vibrant neighborhoods of Marine Park and Mill Basin.
Location and accessibility make Ecology Village a convenient choice for city dwellers. Situated on Campsite Trail within Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, NY 11234, the campground is easily reachable for those with vehicles via Flatbush Avenue. For local users arriving by public transit, the Q35 bus stops near the Ryan Visitor Center, though a moderate walk is required to reach the deeper "village" area of the park. On-site parking is available for registered campers, and the facility features wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking lots to ensure that nature remains inclusive for all New Yorkers. While the area can feel remote, its proximity to the city's infrastructure means that essentials are never too far away, though campers should come prepared for a truly outdoor experience.
Services at Ecology Village are specifically designed to support educational and group outdoor experiences. The staff, including National Park Service rangers, are frequently on-hand to provide guidance and facilitate programs that highlight the local ecosystem. The campground provides the essential framework for a safe and organized stay, focusing on "primitive" style camping that encourages self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship. While the amenities are basic, they are well-maintained to serve the needs of organized groups and individual families alike.

The features and highlights of Ecology Village center on its unique ecological diversity and historical significance. The campground is part of the first municipal airport in New York City, and the contrast between the old runways and the encroaching forest is a sight to behold. For nature enthusiasts, the area is a birdwatcher's paradise, home to a variety of species that frequent the Jamaica Bay area. The hiking trails around the village are specifically noted for being kid-friendly, offering gentle terrain and educational markers that explain the local flora and fauna. The absence of heavy RV traffic ensures that the "woodland" feel of the area is preserved for those seeking a quiet retreat.

What is worth choosing at Ecology Village is the specialized environmental program experience. For families with children in the 4th to 8th-grade range, the overnight nature programs are particularly valuable, offering hands-on learning that is difficult to replicate in a classroom. Choosing this location is also worth it for those who want a "primitive" experience without leaving the city—it allows you to test your gear and skills in a controlled environment. If you are a fan of birding or photography, the early morning light over the salt marshes near the Campsite Trail provides a stunning and uniquely "New York" aesthetic.
However, visitors should be aware of the natural environment they are entering. As a coastal woodland area, ticks and mosquitoes can be prevalent during the warmer months, so bringing appropriate repellent and performing regular checks is highly recommended. The local raccoons are also quite active and clever, so utilizing the provided bear boxes for food storage is essential. For those who value factual, professional management and a friendly atmosphere, Ecology Village stands as a testament to the resilience of nature within an urban world. It is a premier choice for New Yorkers looking to reconnect with the earth while keeping the city within reach.

The building itself was closed with no signs anywhere, so I'm not even sure you can go here other than camping. But I would not camp here. Way too many ticks! It's a cute area, though, with lots of nature and birds, birds, birds!!
Very nice, bear box included with no bears. There was a raccoon. Nice staff and bathrooms a short walk. Good beginners camping.
First time camping! It was awesome! Nothing to compare to yet, so... we had cool time. Ready for our next outdoor adventure!
This area is off-limits (closed) unless you are there with a park ranger, or sanctioned camping group. You are not allowed to enter this area to wander around or hike!
Love everything about this camp ground. Have been visiting for over 30 years.
