Camp Gateway - Staten Island Introduce

Camp Gateway - Staten Island offers one of the most unique outdoor experiences available in the New York metropolitan area. Nestled within the historic grounds of Fort Wadsworth, this campground provides a rare opportunity for local residents and visitors to sleep under the stars while remaining firmly within the boundaries of New York City. Managed by the National Park Service as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, the site serves as a peaceful retreat from the surrounding urban bustle, blending natural beauty with significant American military history. For New Yorkers looking for a quick getaway without a long drive upstate, this location provides a perfect balance of convenience and coastal charm.

The campground is specifically designed for tent camping, fostering a traditional "back-to-basics" atmosphere. Unlike sprawling commercial campgrounds, Camp Gateway is intimate, featuring a small number of well-maintained sites that emphasize the quality of the experience over the quantity of guests. Its position on a morainal hilltop—a natural elevation created by ancient glacial activity—grants campers breathtaking panoramic views of the New York Harbor and the impressive span of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Whether you are a seasoned outdoorsman or a family trying camping for the first time, the park's friendly atmosphere and helpful ranger presence make it a welcoming destination for all skill levels.

Location and accessibility are the hallmarks of the Camp Gateway experience. Located at the historic Fort Wadsworth site, the campground is easily reachable for those living in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the wider New York region. While the administrative address is listed as 210 Ave. S, Brooklyn, NY 11223 (referencing the Gateway National Recreation Area headquarters), the actual physical camping area is situated on the Staten Island side of the harbor. This strategic location allows campers to enjoy the beach at South Beach or explore the abandoned fortifications of Fort Tompkins and Battery Weed, all within walking distance of their tents.

For those traveling from Manhattan or other boroughs, the campground is accessible via public transportation, including the MTA bus system which connects to the St. George Ferry Terminal. This makes it an ideal "basecamp" for tourists who want to spend their days exploring the Statue of Liberty or the sights of Lower Manhattan before returning to a quiet campfire at night. For local drivers, the site is conveniently located near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, though it is important to note that vehicles must be parked in a designated lot, with gear being carried a short distance to the grassy campsites to maintain the park's pristine environment.

  • Professional Ranger-led programs and tours of the historic military batteries and fortifications.
  • Dedicated tent pads designed to provide a level and comfortable surface for sleeping.
  • Complimentary firewood provided nightly by the park staff for use in designated fire rings.
  • Public restroom facilities equipped with modern toilets and sinks for guest convenience.
  • Outdoor cold showers available seasonally for campers to rinse off after a day at the beach.
  • On-site management and assistance from knowledgeable National Park Service personnel.
  • Information services providing details on local hiking trails, birding spots, and cycling routes.

The features and highlights of Camp Gateway - Staten Island distinguish it from any other campground in the world. The primary draw is the juxtaposition of nature and the metropolis; it is common to see local wildlife like hawks and songbirds against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. The sites are meticulously manicured, often described by visitors as having a "golf course" quality due to the lush, green grass. This attention to detail ensures that the small number of available campsites feel exclusive and well-cared for throughout the peak season.

  • Spectacular views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, especially stunning when illuminated at night.
  • Proximity to the South Beach Boardwalk, offering additional food concessions and bike rentals.
  • Seven cozy, individual campsites, including ADA-compliant options for accessible camping.
  • Individual fire pits and grills at every site, perfect for traditional campfire cooking.
  • Access to historic South Beach and Fort Wadsworth Beach for beachcombing and fishing.
  • A quiet, "off-the-grid" feel with no electrical hookups, encouraging a true nature connection.
  • Safe and secure environment within a federally protected National Recreation Area.

Planning a stay at this popular destination requires some foresight, as the limited number of sites means they often book up months in advance, particularly for weekends in the summer. What is worth choosing about Camp Gateway - Staten Island is the unparalleled value and the quality of the staff. For a modest nightly fee, campers receive access to some of the most expensive views in New York City. The inclusion of free firewood is a significant perk that adds to the warmth and community feel of the evening hours. Furthermore, the dedication of the park rangers, such as the frequently praised Ranger Kathy, ensures that guests feel supported and informed throughout their stay. Very nice campground near the Staten Island bridge with public showers and electricity. Easy access to Manhattan in less than 1 hour with a bit of driving to get the ferryboat that offers a free water view of Statue of Liberty.

If I could give 50 stars, I would. This is simply one of the loveliest and most pleasant camping experiences I've ever had. If you're feeling that $30 is a little steep for tent camping and are wondering why the price tag, just go for it-- you will soon realize that you're getting your money's worth and more! First off, free firewood every night is just amazing. Being surrounded by nature and cut-off from the daily noise but still being in New York City is just amazing. Walking distance to the abandoned Fort Collins and South Beach-- amazing. There are seven cozy campsites, each with a tent pad and fire pit/ grill. There are great showers and bathrooms. Plenty of shade. And most of all, the rangers are some of the most dedicated, helpful, knowledgeable, and just plain friendly that you will ever find. Especially ranger Kathy, who took great care of us during our two-night stay. Lots of tourists do utilize this campground, so be sure to book your stay in advance. There is nothing I would change about this campsite!

The campsite was well-maintained and offered all the basic amenities that I needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect, providing easy access to the city while still feeling like I was in the great outdoors. I loved being able to enjoy a campfire under the stars while still being just a short drive away from all the city's attractions.

The batteries and fort are beautiful and worth checking out. Very cool. Of course the view of the Verrazano and Narrows are spectacular. The campground itself looked pretty, didn't get to check out the bathrooms. The only downside is, the beach is absolutely disgusting, even for one on Staten Island. Tampon applicators everywhere along with other debris. You could see the garbage floating in the water everywhere. Spiders on the beach as well!We had been planning to spend one night at the campground and much of the day before on the beach, but I will be cancelling the reservation because the beach is far too gross to spend any amount of time on. I know there's not much that can be done with the water because it's from the harbor, but at least they could clean the beach every so often so families can use it.

Amazing views of my beloved Brooklyn in a beautiful natural setting it's so far into the base that it is on water in the edge of the forest. I watched a deer much away all day on the beach grass. Only complaint is that "hot" water was not even close to hot so plan your showering accordingly! Best $30 stay in NYC
