Elk Country Campground Introduce

For residents of Pennsylvania seeking an authentic escape into the wilderness, Elk Country Campground stands as a beacon of tranquility in the heart of the "PA Wilds." Located in the ruggedly beautiful terrain of Cameron County, this campground is much more than just a place to park an RV or pitch a tent. It is a gateway to one of the most unique natural spectacles in the Eastern United States: the free-roaming Pennsylvania elk herd. Visitors to this Driftwood sanctuary often find themselves waking up to the hauntingly beautiful sound of elk bugling in the early morning mist, a testament to the property's prime location within the elk range. The atmosphere is consistently described as peaceful and family-oriented, making it a preferred destination for those who want to trade the noise of the city for the sounds of the Sinnemahoning Creek and the surrounding forest.

The spirit of hospitality at Elk Country Campground is driven by its dedicated owners and staff, who have earned a reputation for creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. Local families, including those with children who have special needs, have noted the exceptional kindness and understanding shown by the hosts, ensuring that every guest feels comfortable and valued. The grounds are meticulously maintained, balancing the desire for a rustic experience with the necessity of clean, functional facilities. Whether you are a lifelong Pennsylvanian or a first-time visitor to the region, the combination of stunning mountain views, riverside access, and genuine person-to-person service makes this campground a standout choice for an outdoor getaway.

Location and accessibility are among the greatest advantages of Elk Country Campground. Situated at 545 Castle Garden Road in Driftwood, PA, the property is nestled along the Bennett Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek. This location provides a dual benefit: guests can enjoy the seclusion of the deep woods while remaining within a reasonable driving distance of local conveniences and major attractions like the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette. For Pennsylvania travelers, the journey to the campground is a scenic experience in itself, following winding roads that showcase the state's impressive valley vistas. The campground is designed to be accessible to all, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances, a dedicated parking lot, and ADA-compliant restroom facilities.

Navigating the campground is straightforward, with level terrain that accommodates large RVs and ensures a comfortable stay for those with mobility considerations. The physical layout emphasizes the natural beauty of the area, with sites arranged to maximize views of the mountains and the water. Accessibility to the river is a highlight, as guests can simply walk across the quiet country road to reach the water's edge for a day of fishing or relaxing. For those bringing their own vehicles, on-site parking is plentiful, and the campground's proximity to the "Elk Scenic Drive" makes it an ideal basecamp for daily excursions into the wilder parts of the county.

  • Full RV camping accommodations with dedicated electrical and water hookups.
  • Spacious primitive tent sites for those seeking a more traditional and immersive outdoor experience.
  • Clean and well-maintained bathroom and shower facilities, including wheelchair-accessible restrooms.
  • On-site dump station for RV waste management convenience.
  • Secure and organized on-site parking for guests and visitors.
  • Expert local advice and guidance from the owners regarding elk viewing spots and hiking routes.
  • Flexible payment options including acceptance of major credit cards and debit cards.
  • Potable water fill stations located conveniently throughout the grounds for guest use.
  • Direct access to world-class elk viewing, with frequent sightings of bull elks directly on the campground property.
  • Prime riverside location along the Sinnemahoning Creek, perfect for fishing, tubing, or streamside relaxation.
  • Pet-friendly policies that welcome dogs, allowing the entire family to enjoy the Pennsylvania Wilds together.
  • Family-focused amenities including a safe playground and kid-friendly hiking trails nearby.
  • Scenic mountain views that provide a stunning backdrop for evening campfires.
  • Close proximity to the Bucktail Overlook and the Fred Woods Trail for advanced hikers and photographers.
  • A quiet and peaceful environment with a nightly "hushed" atmosphere that emphasizes the sounds of nature.
  • Clean, "put-together" grounds that reflect the pride of ownership and attention to detail.

Planning your visit to the heart of the Pennsylvania elk range is easy, and the management at Elk Country Campground is available to answer questions and assist with site selections. Given the popularity of the region during the "rut" season in September and October, advance reservations are highly recommended. You can contact the team using the following information:

Address: 545 Castle Garden Rd, Driftwood, PA 15832, USA

Phone: (724) 541-7979

Mobile Phone: +1 724-541-7979

When choosing a campground in the Driftwood and Benezette area, Elk Country Campground is worth selecting for its unparalleled connection to local wildlife and its superior hospitality. While many campgrounds in the region offer space for a trailer, few provide the same intimate proximity to the elk herd. The opportunity to see majestic bulls grazing just feet from your campsite is an experience that stays with visitors for a lifetime. This is the primary reason why so many Pennsylvanians return multiple times a year, calling it their "happy place."

Furthermore, the value of the human connection at this campground cannot be overstated. The owners, Ben and his family, go above and beyond to ensure that the environment is safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone, including neurodivergent children and families who may have felt out of place at more rigid facilities. The blend of a "tiny country road" feel with professional-grade RV hookups and accessibility features makes it a rare find. Whether you are there to hike the Quehanna Wilds, float down the river, or simply sit by a fire and watch the stars in some of the darkest skies in the state, Elk Country Campground offers a high-quality, authentic Pennsylvania experience that is truly worth the journey.

Great campground! Our family really enjoyed our stay here. At night it’s really peaceful. We heard bugling morning and evening hours and coyotes at night. We did see 2 Bull Elks in the campground during our stay. The hosts of the campground were the nicest people I have ever met. My son is 7 years old and autistic, doesn’t have the greatest behavior lol. But they made me feel really comfortable having him there which unfortunately, we have been to a few campgrounds and I can tell they just didn’t understand Joey and it made me feel like we were a bother. We will definitely be back!

This is our go to camping spot, our happy place. We love this campground because the owner is amazing, we love Ben and having the company of his son playing with our boys. We come up multiple times a year for 2+ nights, usually 3. The campground is always clean and put together. The location is perfect- love to be able to walk across the tiny country road to the river or just to be able to sit and enjoy the Mountain View’s around a fire. Everything you need is in a reasonable drive. We know the area pretty well, as a family we’ve been coming to the campground for 4 years and counting. My husband has been coming to the area for over 20 years. Local food places are family friendly. And honestly, if you have a question, ask Ben! Will continue to come here all the time.

We called to see if there were any spots available as we were driving through. They had one spot left and we took it. The campground is very scenic right on the creek. The host was extremely friendly. We hope to come back and spend more time there instead of just an overnight.
