The atmosphere at Fahnestock is one of serene seclusion. Characterized by its dense forests, dramatic rock outcroppings, and pristine lakes, the park feels worlds away from the urban sprawl. Location and accessibility are among the top reasons New Yorkers choose Fahnestock. Located at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Putnam Valley, NY 10579, the campground is remarkably easy to reach for local users. For those living in New York City, a short drive up the Taconic State Parkway brings you directly into the heart of the highlands in about an hour. This convenience makes it a top-tier choice for weekend trips where you want to maximize your time under the stars rather than behind the wheel. The park is a staple for residents of Westchester, Putnam, and Orange Counties, serving as a backyard playground for hiking, fishing, and camping.
Upon arrival, guests find a structured environment designed for ease of use. The check-in process is noted for its efficiency, particularly for those who utilize the modern convenience of online pre-registration. While the terrain is naturally hilly and wooded, the main campground loops are accessible by vehicle. However, it is important for prospective campers to note that the park offers a diverse range of site types. While many are drive-up sites, some locations are designated as "hike-in" sites. These specific spots require campers to park in a nearby designated area and transport their gear by hand, offering an even deeper sense of privacy and adventure for those willing to put in a little extra effort.

A campground with around 70 campsites and two bathrooms. As long as filling out the pre-registration online few days ago, the check-in process would be smooth. Each site comes with a picnic table and benches, a fireplace with grill and a standup grill. There are a lot of drinking water pumps that you can use for cooking. Since there're only two bathrooms with showers, walking or driving there depends on the distance between your site and the bathroom. There're two free hot shower rooms per bathroom building. When making reservation, be aware some sites are only available by hiking in which means parking the car in the nearby spot and moving everything by hands.
Camped one night in a tent. The park ranger was really helpful even though we arrived 15 minutes before the office closed for the night. Hot water in the showers. Very pretty lake
Conveniently located a little over an hour from NYC. Campsite was not leveled. Did some kayaking with my son and spent a few hours at the beach. Nice and quiet on a Monday, We had the beach to ourselves early in the morning.
Great spot for tenting. Easy reservations and check in. During our stay, the other campers were quiet and the staff polite. Bathrooms were clean and typical for a state campground.FYI, the sites could use some leveling...if you have a massive 10 person tent, some sites won't have a large enough level spot for you.The swimming lake across the street is nice; it feels rustic, almost like an ADX lake. The sandy beach is massive, but it's so popular that it actually closed to new entrants on the weekend; it was at capacity. Not a quiet getaway. Much less populated during the weekdays.4.5 stars. Recommend.
Fahnestock State Park Campground offers a very peaceful and safe camping ground for novice and experts alike. Stayed for 2 nights in the campground and surprisingly with good amenities. The bathroom and shower rooms (with hot water) are well kept and that’s the only place you can get electricity from (if you need to charge your electronics and all). There is also a place where you can wash your dishes right next to the restrooms. Each camp site has its own table, fire pit and grill to use. The hike around the camp site is fairly easy to do with beautiful foliage (visited fall of 2022) with the good view of the lake and ponds. Would have been better to have more restrooms and shower rooms to use.
