Family Camping Area Introduce
For those living in the New Jersey region, finding a peaceful escape that doesn't require a cross-country journey is a priority. The Family Camping Area, located in Laurence Harbor within the expansive grounds of Cheesequake State Park, offers exactly that. This campground is a unique treasure for local residents, situated in a transitional zone where northern hardwood forests meet southern pine barrens. This rare ecological blend provides a backdrop that is both diverse and serene, making it one of the most interesting places to pitch a tent or park a trailer in the Garden State. Whether you are a seasoned outdoorsman or a family looking for your first camping adventure, this facility provides a welcoming environment that balances rugged nature with essential comforts.
The Family Camping Area is specifically designed to accommodate the needs of modern campers while preserving the authentic feel of the New Jersey wilderness. It serves as a vital recreational hub for the surrounding communities, offering a place where children can learn about local flora and fauna firsthand. The campground’s reputation is built on its ability to provide a secluded atmosphere despite its proximity to urban centers, allowing visitors to swap the sounds of the city for the rustle of leaves and the evening calls of local wildlife. It is a place where memories are made around fire rings and over shared meals at sturdy picnic tables, reinforcing the strong community and family values that New Jersey residents hold dear.
Location and accessibility are among the standout features of this campground. Nestled in Laurence Harbor, NJ 08879, it is conveniently positioned for easy access from major roadways like the Garden State Parkway (Exit 120). This makes it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway, as travelers can spend less time driving and more time enjoying the great outdoors. Local users appreciate that while the park feels miles away from civilization, it remains a short 10-to-15-minute drive from local amenities like Walmart and other retail stores, ensuring that any forgotten supplies are never out of reach. However, visitors should be aware of a specific navigational detail: there is an 11-foot height restriction for vehicles entering the camping area due to a low bridge, so those with high-profile RVs should plan accordingly.
The services offered at the Family Camping Area are focused on providing a clean, safe, and functional environment for all guests. The management ensures that the basic necessities of outdoor living are well-maintained to enhance the visitor experience. Services provided at the site include:
- Professional reservation system through the state park service to ensure guaranteed placement.

What truly sets this campground apart are its features and highlights, which cater to a wide range of interests from relaxation to high-energy recreation. The park's unique geography means that one moment you can be walking through a saltwater marsh and the next you are under the canopy of an Atlantic white cedar swamp. Notable highlights of the Family Camping Area include:
- Wheelchair accessible parking lots and ADA-accessible crabbing bridges for inclusive recreation.
- Extensive trail networks, including the Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue trails for hikers, and the White Trail for mountain bikers.

When considering which campground is worth choosing in the Middlesex County area, the Family Camping Area stands out for its balance of cost and quality. For a modest fee—typically around $20 to $25 per night depending on residency—families gain access to a well-policed and clean environment. One of the most significant advantages mentioned by regular visitors is the privacy offered by the sites. Unlike many private campgrounds where trailers are parked side-by-side with little room to breathe, these sites are often separated by natural buffers, giving you the feeling of having your own private slice of the woods. The availability of warm showers and flush toilets, while simple, provides a level of comfort that makes the experience accessible even for those who are not "hardcore" campers.
Ultimately, choosing this campground means supporting New Jersey’s natural heritage while enjoying a high-quality recreational experience. The proximity to both the Raritan Bay and inland forests means you can experience a variety of outdoor activities—from kayaking and swimming during the summer months to birdwatching and hiking in the crisp autumn air. The presence of on-site parking and kid-friendly amenities like playgrounds and easy trails makes it a stress-free option for parents. If you are looking for a place that feels like a true retreat without the hassle of a long-distance haul, the Family Camping Area in Laurence Harbor is an excellent choice for your next outdoor adventure.

Customer Reviews
I had some good experience here. The sites are good in terms of privacy, bathrooms can be cleaner, but of course it's difficult to maintain it in location like this. But overall, I really enjoyed myself here and will definitely come back for more camping.
Not that bad of experience, could have been better. Let’s get to the pros and cons:Side notes:•Showing up past 5-6pm there’s a lock on the gate and the confirmation email has a lock code to open it from the backside.•2 nights of camping is $45Pros:•In the park, a short drive like a 3 min to get to the family campsite.•Bathrooms had showers and warm water•Our campground (29) was felt pretty private which was good.•garbage bins were in walkable distance•campground was clean and no trash was seenWalking on the road through campsites we’re beautiful•close enough to Walmart and other stores if you need anything (10-15min drive)Cons:•I believe we were close to the highway, you can hear some cars driving faintly•our group had a weird experience with someone who stopped their car right in front of our campsite for 2 hours before we had to confront them. Was very odd, and a bit of a scary situation. Definitely really random and wish there was a way that could have not happened.
Very nice and clean. But way too noisy highway noise was unbearable. I could of just camped in my back yard. They need to move campgrounds further inside away from roads
