Hanscom AFB FamCamp Introduce
For military families and authorized Department of Defense (DoD) personnel residing in or traveling through Massachusetts, Hanscom AFB FamCamp offers a unique and highly affordable outdoor lodging option. Located in Bedford, just a stone's throw from the historic sites of the American Revolution and the vibrant city life of Boston, this campground serves as a vital recreational hub for the military community. Operated by the 66th Force Support Squadron, FamCamp is designed to provide a safe, family-friendly environment where service members and veterans can enjoy the natural beauty of New England without the high costs typically associated with the Greater Boston area.
The campground is situated in a wooded area that provides ample shade and a sense of serenity, despite its proximity to the Hanscom Air Force Base flightline. While it is technically located about three miles outside the main base gates, it remains a secure and dedicated space for military-connected users. It functions year-round, offering a full range of services during the peak summer months and essential hookups for those brave enough to weather the Massachusetts winter. For local users, it is a perfect "staycation" spot that combines the convenience of proximity to home with the relaxing atmosphere of a traditional forest campground.
Location and accessibility are among the primary reasons local patrons choose Hanscom AFB FamCamp. The address is 499 South Rd, Bedford, MA 01730, which puts campers in the immediate vicinity of Minute Man National Historical Park and the famous Minuteman Bikeway, an 11-mile paved trail that connects Bedford to Cambridge. For those looking to explore further, the campground is approximately 15 miles west of downtown Boston, making day trips to Faneuil Hall or Fenway Park highly manageable. Accessibility is prioritized on-site, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance, dedicated parking lots, and accessible restroom facilities ensuring that all eligible patrons, including disabled veterans, can comfortably utilize the space.
The services offered at FamCamp cater to a variety of camping styles, from those traveling in massive Class A motorhomes to backpackers with simple tents. The management provides essential on-site support, with staff members often noted for their helpfulness in providing local travel tips and navigating base requirements. Additionally, the facility includes affordable laundry services and community spaces that foster a sense of camaraderie among those who have served. Because the campground is part of the military’s MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) program, the fees are kept significantly lower than commercial counterparts in the region.
- Full RV hookup sites featuring water, sewer, and 30/50 amp electrical service.
- Partial hookup sites (water and electric) and primitive tent sites for a more rustic experience.
- On-site laundry room with multiple washers and dryers available for a low fee.
- A community room (Hartigan Hall) featuring couches, a television, and games for families.
- Honeywagon services for sites without direct sewer hookups to facilitate easy tank maintenance.
- Propane refill services available on-site during designated hours.
- Free Wi-Fi access throughout the campground, though signal strength may vary by site.
- Equipment rentals through the Outdoor Recreation office, including camping gear and sports equipment.
The features and highlights of Hanscom AFB FamCamp are centered on its community-oriented atmosphere and its natural setting. The campground is heavily wooded, offering a beautiful canopy of trees that provides relief during the humid Massachusetts summers. A central fire pit serves as the heart of the camp, where free firewood is often provided, encouraging guests to gather and share stories. For families, the presence of basketball hoops and a playground ensures that children have plenty of space to burn off energy in a safe, controlled environment. The campground’s location adjacent to the airfield also provides a unique highlight for aviation enthusiasts, who can watch various aircraft take off and land during the day.
- A centrally located community fire pit with complimentary wood for evening gatherings.
- Direct proximity to the Minuteman Bikeway, ideal for cycling, running, and walking.
- Pet-friendly policies that allow for up to four pets per patron (leash laws apply).
- Picnic areas scattered throughout the park, complete with tables and chairs for outdoor dining.
- A large pavilion available for social events and unit gatherings.
- Regular MWR-sponsored events such as movie nights and holiday-themed parties for children.
- Access to Hanscom AFB proper amenities (with valid ID), including the commissary, BX, and movie theater.
- Close proximity to Walden Pond and other historic landmarks in Lexington and Concord.
Authorized patrons looking to make a reservation or inquire about current site availability can contact the FamCamp office directly. It is important to note that reservations are typically accepted up to 30 to 120 days in advance depending on your duty status, and they are highly recommended during the peak season from May through October. What is worth choosing about Hanscom AFB FamCamp is the undeniable value and the sense of security it provides to the military community. In an area where hotel prices and commercial RV park rates can be prohibitive, this FamCamp offers a budget-conscious alternative that doesn't sacrifice safety or location. It is "worth choosing" specifically for those who want a base camp that feels like a shared military neighborhood. The incredibly helpful staff, like Jen and Lydia, are frequently praised for going above and beyond to help guests plan their excursions into Boston, adding a level of personalized service you won't find at a standard commercial lot.
While the campground has a more "rustic" and "no-frills" feel compared to high-end RV resorts, its charm lies in its simplicity and the caliber of the people you meet. Choosing this site means you are supporting military MWR programs while gaining unparalleled access to the historic heart of Massachusetts. Whether you are an active-duty family on a PCS move or a retiree exploring the New England foliage, Hanscom AFB FamCamp provides a peaceful, shaded retreat that honors your service with affordable rates and a welcoming community. For those who enjoy a bit of local history combined with the convenience of modern base amenities nearby, there is no better choice in the Bedford area.

Great fire pit centrally located for anyone to use with plenty of free wood.8. There are tables & chairs scattered around the park to use.9. Honeywagons are provided in case you’re in a spot with partial hookups and need to empty your tanks without having to drag your trailer over to the dump station.10. It’s family friendly and felt safe!Negatives:1. The bathrooms, laundry room, and community room were all dirty.2. It’s clear to see who’s been there a while. Their spots are cluttered and messy.3. It’s noisy, but it didn’t bother us too much. (It’s at the end of a flight line.)4. It’s not actually on base. You just drive through an unmanned gate.5. Unfortunately, this is the most run down and dirtiest FamCamp we’ve ever stayed at.
Wow, really mixed thoughts about this place and my hopes are that this review will alert those in charge of changes that NEED to take place here.First the Good.Staff was amazingly helpful and can not say enough good things about Jen and Lydia. We spoke with Lydia a few times by phone in making our reservation and she was KEY in giving us advice on how we should do our visit in to downtown Boston. We followed here plan to the last detail and had such an amazing day, so thank you Lydia. Jen, the head manager also super in helping us while we were there an also explained to me why and how things are what they are now. By the time we arrived here Jen had no help as they had all left for school and was trying to manage this place solo while also doing other duties on base leaving her a very small window to help campers. Laundry room was big and very affordable as compared to rates outside the base. Now the bad.Place overall looks and feels like a dump because of the SQUATTERS that are allowed to stay and JUNK up the place they way they do. Jen explained to me that (higher management) allows campers to stay here for up to 6 months. Folks, this is NOT camping but a change of address and ridiculous. There needs to be a limit, 14, maybe up to 30 days and then its time to MOVE ON! The place was packed when we arrived and saw a few that could not get in because of these squatters. Jen explained that permanent duty can live here and I can accept that but while there saw no one in uniform or fitting this description. The second part to this is the filthy conditions these squatters have allowed their rig and their site to become. In order to stay here I thought we all had to have served and so should have an idea of how to keep our areas up to standard. Including one photo of just ONE camper (but there were several) that were on blocks, had grass growing up the side of the rig, had broken down wood furniture outside the rig and some even had rabbits in cages....SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!My hope is that senior management will read this review and do something about this. Even if folks are allowed to move in for six months ( ridiculous) at least make them....FORCE THEM to keep their area up to standard. It should not be tolerated or accepted, they should be kicked out. I also respectfully ask that you consider keeping a portion of spots as first come first serve so that the rest of the campers can have a place to stay while we move across the Country. I know of other Fancamps that offer this and its is a huge help.
Wow, what a great discovery ! Jenn is lovely, kind and so understanding. There is always a place for you. I love my experience there and definitely come back in the future. Clean showers, met a lot of great people, had good conversations. The fees are so affordable ! And you have the view on the landing road 😍Wonderful job Jenn, thank you !
No reservations allowed, but always a place to park for military. Enjoy the community campfire and wash clothes for $1 each wash and dry. I would stay here again for $26 FHU.
We love coming to Hanscom AFB. It’s so fun to be near all the air traffic. I love the sounds of Freedom. Thank you to all our service members past and present! 🥰
