Hearthstone Point Campground Introduce
Hearthstone Point Campground stands as one of the most iconic destinations for outdoor enthusiasts in the Lake George region. Situated on the southern western shore of the "Queen of American Lakes," this New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) facility offers a classic Adirondack camping experience. For New York residents, it serves as a gateway to the diverse recreation of Warren County, blending the rustic charm of wooded campsites with the unparalleled beauty of the lakefront. Established in 1927, the campground has grown into a bustling summer hub where generations of New Yorkers have gathered to enjoy the cool mountain air and crystal-clear waters.
The campground occupies nearly 100 acres of lush forest and is particularly famous for its balance of activity and accessibility. While it is located just two miles north of the lively Lake George Village, the dense canopy of oak and pine trees provides a sense of immersion in the wild. It is a popular choice for families and groups who want to be close to the "action"—including theme parks, outlet malls, and historic sites—while still having a private beach and a crackling fire to return to at night. The professional staff and Junior Naturalist programs ensure that even the youngest campers find ways to engage with the local ecology, making it a cornerstone of the New York State park system.
Location and accessibility are among the top reasons New Yorkers choose Hearthstone Point for their seasonal getaways. Located at 3298 Lake Shore Drive in Lake George, NY, the campground is easily accessible via the Adirondack Northway (I-87). Its proximity to major transit routes makes it a convenient drive for those traveling from the Capital District or even downstate. One unique aspect of its geography is that the campground is divided by NY-9N; many of the lower sites provide direct access to the beach, while the upper sites offer a quieter, more secluded forest atmosphere away from the shoreline activity.
For guests with mobility needs, Hearthstone Point is notably accommodating. The facility features wheelchair-accessible entrances and a designated accessible parking lot. Within the camping area, there are specifically designed accessible campsites and a modernized shower building equipped with accessible features. While the terrain includes some hills—notably leading down to the sand beach—the main roads are well-maintained for vehicle traffic. On-site parking is available at each campsite, and additional parking areas are strategically placed near the day-use and swimming facilities to ensure all guests can navigate the park with ease.
Hearthstone Point Campground provides a comprehensive range of services tailored to the needs of both traditional tent campers and modern RV travelers. As a DEC-operated facility, the focus is on maintaining high standards of forest hygiene and guest convenience. The services offered include:
- RV camping sites that can accommodate units up to 40 feet in length.
- On-site services including a trailer dump station and a dedicated recycling center.
- Multiple bathhouses featuring flush toilets and hot showers (included with the camping fee).
- Professional check-in and registration services at the main gatehouse.
- Educational Junior Naturalist programs for children aged 5-13 to learn about the Adirondack environment.
- Regular ranger patrols and staff-maintained beach areas to ensure safety and order.
- Flexible payment options, including the acceptance of major credit and debit cards for camping fees.
- Water spigots located throughout the loops to provide easy access to potable water for all sites.
The features and highlights of the campground are designed to maximize the "Lake George Experience." From the private shoreline to the mountain trails, there is no shortage of ways to spend a summer day. Key highlights include:
- A beautiful sand beach and designated swimming area exclusive to campground guests and day-use visitors.
- Hiking trails within the facility and easy access to the nearby Prospect Mountain trail for panoramic views of the lake.
- Dog-friendly policies that allow for leashed pets, making it a perfect spot for the whole family.
- Spacious picnic areas equipped with charcoal grills and sturdy picnic tables for afternoon gatherings.
- Diverse fishing opportunities directly from the shore for lake trout, landlocked salmon, and smallmouth bass.
- The "Campsite Restoration Project" which ensures that sites are periodically rotated and maintained to preserve the natural foliage.
- Proximity to local attractions such as the Great Escape theme park and the historic Fort William Henry.
- Wooded campsites that offer a varying degree of privacy, ranging from lakeside spots to deep-forest retreats.
If you are ready to secure a spot for the upcoming season, it is recommended to book well in advance through the ReserveAmerica system, as sites at Hearthstone Point fill up quickly during the summer months.

Choosing Hearthstone Point Campground is worth it for anyone who wants a "front-row seat" to everything Lake George has to offer. For New York residents, the value of staying at a state-run facility lies in the affordability and the guarantee that your fees contribute to the preservation of the Adirondack Park. While the campground is known for its lively and social atmosphere—which some visitors find more energetic than remote wilderness sites—it offers an unparalleled convenience factor. Being just minutes from the village means you can easily go out for dinner or visit a local museum and still be back at your campsite in time for s'mores.
Furthermore, the variety of the terrain makes it worth choosing for different types of campers. If you want to wake up and walk straight into the water, the lower loops are ideal. If you prefer the peace of the woods, the upper tiers provide a classic forest canopy. The addition of kid-friendly hikes and the Junior Naturalist program makes it a premier choice for families looking to introduce their children to the outdoors without being too far from the comforts of civilization. Whether you are coming for the world-class fishing, the stunning sunsets on the sand beach, or the challenging climb up Prospect Mountain, Hearthstone Point provides an authentic and accessible slice of New York’s natural heritage.

The WORST experience! If you want to bring your family, don't! If you want to sleep after a long day at the lake, you won't! I am laying here listening to people blasting music, cursing up a storm and just being disrespectful to others at the campsite. This is not just one group of campers like this, this is many! Luckily my kid sleeps through a lot but I can't and this is AWFUL! Club music, karaoke and potheads galore... DO NOT CONSIDER THIS PLACE!
“I was very disappointed with this campsite. The facilities were dirty, the bathrooms were not maintained, and the staff didn’t seem helpful at all. The noise at night made it impossible to relax. Definitely not the peaceful camping trip I was hoping for.”Bad bad bad
Wow what a gem on Lake George. So grateful for the state of NY to offer to residents an inexpensive nature experience with a million dollar view! Tent only so getting back with nature at its best!
Heartstone Point has deteriorated and not attended, too. The grounds are terrible, Fireplaces are not in the best of shape. Sites are small. I've been coming to Heartstone Point for the last 50 years, and I can not believe how bad this campsite has deteriorated so much. This used to be a great campground, absolutely no maintenance. It's a shame the State would allow this to happen. The state needs to investigate management at this site and do a walk through with the staff!
We have been coming to this campsite several times a year for the past decade and while it remains a favorite, because of its location right outside the Village of Lake George and the water access from the park, it feels like the grounds and facility maintenance has steadily gone downhill the last few years. We always stay on the loop closest to the lake where the bathrooms are a bit older (there were supposed to have been remodeled along with the others), the age of the bathrooms would not be an issue if they were even remotely clean, there was mold in the sink and NO hand soap, another camper left some in there but when that was finished there was no other soap provided, luckily toilet paper was always readily available and we had soap at our site. The staff is super friendly and doing the best that they can but it feels as if New York State has no interest in funding its parks. We will continue to visit but will pack extra supplies for cleanliness
