Leedstown Campground Introduce
Leedstown Campground offers a serene and authentic outdoor experience for those looking to explore the historic Northern Neck of Virginia. Situated directly on the banks of the Potomac River, this campground is a hidden gem for travelers who prioritize natural beauty and a quiet atmosphere over the high-traffic commercialism of larger resort-style parks. As a family-oriented destination, it provides a rustic setting where guests can truly disconnect and enjoy the simpler side of life. Whether you are a seasonal camper looking for a long-term summer home or a weekend traveler passing through the Colonial Beach area, the campground welcomes you with mature shade trees and impressive waterfront vistas.
The character of Leedstown Campground is defined by its small-scale, intimate environment. Unlike modern "parking lot" style RV parks, the grounds here are lush with vegetation, providing a sense of privacy and a genuine connection to the Virginia landscape. The park is particularly favored by anglers and nature enthusiasts who appreciate the direct river access and the abundance of local wildlife, including bald eagles and ospreys. While the facility maintains a strong community of seasonal residents, it reserves prime spots for transient guests, often surprising visitors with free upgrades to waterfront sites when availability allows. This hospitality, combined with a peaceful environment, makes it a notable choice for those seeking a tranquil riverside retreat.
Location and accessibility are major advantages for Leedstown Campground. Located at 2195 Leedstown Rd, Colonial Beach, VA 22443, the campground is tucked away in a historic pocket of Westmoreland County. For Virginia residents, it is a convenient drive that feels worlds away from the urban centers of Richmond or Northern Virginia. The site is approximately 20 to 30 minutes from the heart of Colonial Beach, a town famous for its boardwalk, sandy beaches, and vibrant local events. The campground's position on Leedstown Road ensures that guests are far from highway noise, yet close enough to essential services and regional attractions.
For history buffs, the campground serves as an ideal base camp for exploring the "Birthplace of our Nation." Within a short drive, guests can visit the George Washington Birthplace National Monument, the James Monroe Birthplace Park, and the historic Stratford Hall. Accessibility within the campground is straightforward, featuring a wheelchair-accessible parking lot and flat, navigable terrain around the primary camping areas. On-site parking is ample, allowing for easy setup of large RV rigs and extra vehicles for those traveling in groups. The proximity to the river means that boaters and fishermen can move from their campsite to the water in just a few steps.

What makes Leedstown Campground worth choosing is the peace of mind that comes with its secluded, riverside location. In a time when many campgrounds are becoming overcrowded and noisy, this facility remains a bastion of the traditional camping experience. It is worth choosing specifically for its " waterfront value"—the ability to wake up with the river just outside your door at a price point that is often more reasonable than neighboring resorts. For the dedicated angler or the family looking to teach their children how to fish and appreciate nature, the combination of the fishing pier, boat launch, and small beach provides everything needed for a successful outdoor vacation.
Furthermore, the hospitality of the local management adds a personal touch that is frequently mentioned by returning guests. The flexibility to accommodate late arrivals and the willingness to provide site upgrades creates a welcoming environment from the moment you pull in. While the bathhouse facilities are more on the rustic and aged side, the park's strengths in site quality, river access, and natural beauty far outweigh these minor drawbacks for most experienced campers. If you are a self-contained RV traveler or a tent camper who loves the sound of the water at night, Leedstown Campground is a premier choice for an authentic Northern Neck experience. It offers a rare chance to sit under the stars, listen to the river, and escape the pace of modern life in one of Virginia's most beautiful historic regions.

We had a nice time at this campground over the weekend. It’s small and quiet, and our site had a beautiful view of the river. My husband really enjoyed fishing as well.
Camped here on our way to and from North Carolina in late August. The owner was very helpful and met us there after hours to collect $ and show us our site, which was upgraded to waterfront for free because they weren't full. There are a lot of seasonal campers here. Because school had already started, we had the place almost to ourselves. It was a beautiful site overlooking the river. There are lots of trees and shade, not like many campgrounds where you're just tightly lined up in a sunny field. The price was quite reasonable. There was a fishing pier, and also a tiny beach area that looked like it doesn't see much use. The bath house was pretty bad- not clean and rather run-down. I was a bit nervous about using it and my husband got a foot infection from the shower, even though he wore flip flops. It would be better for campers with bathrooms. The water was hot and lathered well though. Water hookup for the camper was good with no odor or weird taste (we do use an in-line filter). When we were there, mosquitos were wicked once the sun started to set, so be prepared with spray. We didn't really spend any time sight seeing because this was just a stop-over for us, but Colonial Beach is nearby and is quite nice. Also there are several nearby historic sites that we have visited in the past. If it wasn't for the bath house, I would have given this place five stars.
We spent two nights while seeing a relative in the area. Very quiet, reasonably priced and our sight was by the water. Brett, the manager was friendly and helpful. Most of the campers here are seasonal but the have a few spots for overnighters. We would definitely come again! Oh and there are eagles flying around on the river!!
We love this place! Such a welcoming environment and very family friendly. We love our cousin camping trips here!
Nothing but peace and quiet! Beautiful view of the river, great fishing, and the man who runs it was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable! Very basic campground but just the ticket for a nice get away! Very affordable! Property and buildings are older but very well kept.
