Manny Gordon Pavilion Introduce
For those living in the Keystone State, few things compare to the quiet majesty of a Pennsylvania forest. The Manny Gordon Pavilion, located within the Manny Gordon Recreation Area of the Pinchot State Forest, offers a quintessential back-to-nature experience for local families and outdoor enthusiasts. Named in honor of the legendary Pennsylvania forester and conservationist, this site serves as a tribute to the legacy of forest preservation. For residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania and beyond, it provides a sanctuary where the hustle of modern life is replaced by the gentle rustle of hemlocks and the nearby flow of pristine mountain streams.
Operating as a key recreational hub within the Thornhurst Tract, Manny Gordon is designed for those who appreciate simplicity. Unlike large, commercial resorts, this campground emphasizes a "primitive-plus" style of recreation. It is a place where you can pitch a tent or park a small RV and immediately feel integrated into the landscape. The atmosphere is consistently described by locals as very open and peaceful, making it an ideal choice for a weekend of reflection or a base camp for exploring the rugged beauty of Lackawanna County. Whether you are looking for a shaded spot for a family reunion or a quiet night under the stars, this recreation area delivers an authentic forest experience.
Manny Gordon Pavilion is located on Pavilion Road within Thornhurst Township, PA 18424. This location puts it squarely in the heart of the Pocono plateau region, accessible via scenic backroads that wind through the Pinchot State Forest. For local travelers coming from Scranton or Wilkes-Barre, the drive is relatively short but feels worlds away from the urban centers. The site is primarily reached via Bear Lake Road, a stone-paved loop that maintains the rustic charm of the area while remaining navigable for standard vehicles.
The facility is notably proactive regarding accessibility, a feature highly valued by the Pennsylvania community. It boasts a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a dedicated wheelchair-accessible parking lot, ensuring that the beauty of the forest is available to everyone. On-site parking is clearly marked and located conveniently near the primary picnic and camping areas. Visitors should keep in mind that state forest roads are not maintained in the winter, so the best time for accessibility is typically between late spring and late autumn, when the roads are clear and the forest is in full bloom.

Choosing the Manny Gordon Pavilion and its associated recreation area is an investment in a true Pennsylvania outdoor tradition. What makes this site particularly worth choosing is the balance it strikes between primitive solitude and essential accessibility. For many local families, the "kid-friendly" nature of the trails and the availability of running water make it a much more approachable entry point into forest camping than more remote backcountry sites. You get the ruggedness of the Pinchot State Forest with the added comfort of a dedicated pavilion and designated parking.
Furthermore, the peaceful nature of the Thornhurst Tract is a significant draw. Because the campsites are "very open" and "plenty of space" is provided, you don't feel like you are on top of your neighbors. This makes it an excellent choice for those who truly want to "get away from it all." The nearby Choke Creek Falls and the sprawling wetlands offer stunning photographic opportunities and a chance to see a side of Pennsylvania that remains largely untouched by development. Choosing Manny Gordon means supporting the state's conservation efforts while enjoying a high-quality, low-cost vacation.
Finally, the sense of community among those who visit this area is a highlight. Reviewers often mention the quiet respect found among fellow campers. Even though it is right on the stone loop road, the area stays quiet, and the proactive management ensures that the site remains a clean and safe place for everyone. Whether you are there for a quick afternoon picnic or a multi-day hiking expedition on the Pinchot Trail, Manny Gordon Pavilion provides a welcoming, accessible, and historically rich backdrop for your next Pennsylvania adventure. Customer Reviews
Awesome campsites. Basic pit toilets, there usable lol. We did have an issue where we reserved two sites and ended up showing up to a tent pitched in the back of one of the sites. There is absolutely 0 customer support on the weekends. Again absolutely 0 resources to get ahold of to sort out this issue. Luckily we had two site reservations and we were able to fit on one site. The site jumper showed up around 10pm on a motorcycle. We figured best not to stir the pot....
Beautiful site even though it right on the stone road of the loop. Very quiet - not many people walking about.
One of my favorite places to walk. I'm a dog walker not a hiker. The trails are great. Beautiful streams. Wide hilly trails and wooded trails too. Lots of picnic areas. Good parking. It's only downfall is old latrines.
I have camped here several times, great views of the stars, lots of hiking/exploring areas, peaceful and quiet. Bathrooms don't have running water and are honestly kinda pretty gross so uh yeah. Everything but the bathrooms is a great experience!
Great recreation area. Rustic camping, large private sites. Toilets and pavilion, no bath house.
