Peconic River Campground Introduce
Peconic River Campground serves as a peaceful sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts looking to escape the relentless pace of New York City and the bustling suburban sprawl of Long Island. Nestled along the banks of the Peconic River in Calverton, this privately owned campground offers a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the Pine Barrens ecosystem. For many local residents, it represents a "home away from home" where the air is filled with the scent of pine and the only soundtrack is the gentle flow of the river and the occasional call of a resident swan. Unlike larger, state-run facilities, Peconic River Campground maintains an intimate and unhurried atmosphere, making it a favorite for those who value privacy and a genuine connection with the land.
The campground is uniquely situated to offer a primitive yet comfortable experience that appeals to traditional campers and overlanders alike. It is widely recognized for its "pick your own spot" philosophy, allowing guests to choose their own slice of paradise upon arrival. Whether you prefer the sun-drenched expanse of a grassy meadow or the cool, dappled shade of the natural woods, the property provides ample space to spread out without feeling crowded by neighbors. Managed with a personal touch by dedicated staff like Tyler, who is frequently cited by regulars for his welcoming and helpful demeanor, the campground emphasizes community respect and environmental stewardship, ensuring the grounds remain pristine for all who visit.
Located at 312 S River Rd, Calverton, NY 11933, the campground is exceptionally well-positioned for local accessibility. It is situated just off Exit 71 of the Long Island Expressway (LIE), making it an easy drive for anyone traveling from western Long Island or the five boroughs. For those living on the East End, it serves as a convenient central hub between the North and South Forks. Despite its secluded feel, the campground is remarkably close to local necessities; a gas station is located just two minutes away, and major retail centers and grocery stores are within a ten-minute drive in nearby Riverhead.
Accessibility features at the park include a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, ensuring that the beauty of the Peconic River is reachable for all guests. The terrain varies from flat grassy fields to wooded paths, providing a range of environments to suit different comfort levels. While the sites are non-electric and non-assigned, the layout is designed to allow for easy on-site parking near your chosen campsite, which is a significant convenience for those traveling with substantial gear or families with small children.

For New Yorkers, it is one of the few places on Long Island where you can enjoy a private, serene riverside campfire just an hour or two away from home.
The quality of the natural resources here is also a major draw. The well water is refreshing, the air is clean, and the direct river access makes it a paddler's dream. Great campground. Camp once in the summer and Thanksgiving. Tyler is wonderful. He's very friendly, welcoming, helpful, understanding, attentive, and always available. Sites are not assigned. Pick whichever site you want to camp. Grass, dirt, wood platform sites. No hookup. Portable toilets and sink. Outdoor showers (good to use only during summer). Water hose available. Firepit on every site. Dispose of your own garbage in dumpster located at entrance. Gas station 2 minutes away. Stores located 10 minutes away. Please keep your areas clean. I totally recommend if you know how to camp...
Cute little privately owned campground. Nice view of Peconic Lake. Sadly no swimming in the lake. No electric hookup, and amazing well water access. Much better than city water. Be careful of the marsh during the rain, lol. So many wonderful little fire pits dotted around the campgrounds. Dogs are permitted, I just highly recommend that they be leashed, just in case the swans decide to come on land.
This was everything I expected it to be and better. It was rustic and peaceful. We appreciated the fire pit because we opted to leave our portable one home. There were porta-potties (yes smelly but it was clean and I brought wipes to clean the seat, as well as brought my own toilet paper even though there was some in there) a shower (I didn't use it but heard it was cold). I've learned after years of camping to not put total cleanliness and hygiene expectations into others hands, so I make sure to bring what I need.Having a morning cup of tea looking out over Peconic Lake watching the hawks catch fish was so relaxing. Our dog was so thrilled to meet other dogs and explore sniff spots.I see another reviewer complained about traffic noise. Well it's Long Island and difficult to get away from that, but even the train didn't bother me. I found the place to be quiet and peaceful with the occasional noise from civilization. I was lulled to sleep by an owl and crickets. How can you beat that?! Taylor was friendly and it was easy checking in with just a phone call he answered right away. Definitely will be back.
This is going to be our fifth time there of many to come I am sure. I personally use my own toilet, I do use shower there and works amazingly well, love the very cold water. There is always room and this is probably one of the most important reasons for us to go back, our schedule doesn't leave much time to plan so it is very last minute let's go camping :)Sometimes you can hear the noise from expwy some others not, it depends. The train for sure, but it is not a big deal 30 seconds of train noise (you should come live next to the subway in the city) that's annoying...The host it is simple and he doesn't bother about a thing; (Could be that we leave the spot in shape always as you all should). We come in a comercial vehicle which some campgrounds don't allow, well here is not a problem folks. So to me ☆☆☆☆☆By the way the lake it is beautiful, can't wait to camp in winter to see it from the spot.
Beautiful place with amazing staff. Very relaxed environment. there isn't much to do if your not a fisherman but I enjoy it and it's spacious. No electricity and water is spread out. Porta potty and 1 outdoor shower. This Camping for Campers not glampers.
