Pinegrove furnace, group camping area Introduce

Pine Grove Furnace State Park, nestled in the scenic South Mountain region of Gardners, Pennsylvania, offers a specialized group camping area designed for organized adult and youth groups. This historic park, which once served as a bustling iron-making community during the 18th and 19th centuries, now provides a tranquil escape within the northern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Surrounded by the expansive Michaux State Forest, the group camping area is a favored destination for scout troops, church groups, and outdoor clubs seeking a communal outdoor experience. The atmosphere is one of profound peace, characterized by the rustle of leaves in the surrounding hardwoods and the nearby flow of Mountain Creek, making it an ideal setting for team building and nature education.

For Pennsylvania residents and visiting groups, the park offers a unique blend of recreational activity and deep historical significance. It is famously known as the midpoint of the 2,186-mile Appalachian Trail, where hikers traditionally celebrate their progress with the "half-gallon ice cream challenge" at the nearby general store. The group camping area is positioned to allow easy access to this legendary trail, as well as two stunning mountain lakes—Fuller Lake and Laurel Lake. Whether your group is interested in a rain-filled weekend of "MAHHA" (Mid-Atlantic Hammock Hangers Association) adventures or a sunny retreat focused on swimming and hiking, Pine Grove Furnace provides the infrastructure and natural beauty to ensure a memorable stay for visitors of all ages.

The group camping area is located in a secluded, wooded section of Pine Grove Furnace State Park, ensuring privacy from the main family campground. Accessibility is a key feature, as the park is easily reached via Pennsylvania Route 233, which connects to major interstates like I-81 and I-76. While the camping sites themselves are rustic and geared toward tenting, the surrounding infrastructure is designed to accommodate groups efficiently. The park roads are well-maintained, though groups arriving in larger vehicles or caravans should coordinate parking to maintain the quiet integrity of the forest environment. The central location in Gardners makes it a convenient meeting point for groups coming from Harrisburg, Carlisle, or Gettysburg.

  • The group camping area is divided into six separate sites with a total combined capacity of 180 people.
  • Features a wheelchair accessible parking lot to ensure that the initial arrival process is inclusive for all group members.
  • On-site parking is available specifically for the group area, allowing for the convenient unloading of gear and supplies.
  • The sites are situated around a large, open playfield, which is perfect for group games, sports, and organized outdoor activities.
  • Accessibility to the park's main day-use areas is provided through a network of trails and well-marked service roads.

The services offered at the Pine Grove Furnace group camping area are tailored to support the needs of large, organized gatherings. Unlike the individual family sites, these areas emphasize shared resources and communal living. The park management provides the essential framework for a safe and sanitary stay, allowing group leaders to focus on their specific programming. While the group sites are considered rustic, they are supported by the park’s broader modern facilities, ensuring that even large groups have access to necessary amenities during their time in the Michaux State Forest.

  • Six spacious tenting sites available year-round for organized groups, with three sites accommodating up to 20 people and three sites accommodating up to 40 people.
  • Potable water is provided via shared spigots located within the group camping loop.
  • Public restroom facilities are conveniently located on-site, with modern restrooms featuring flush toilets and hot showers a short distance away in the main park areas.
  • Each group site is equipped with large, community-sized fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables to facilitate group meals and evening gatherings.
  • A seasonal camp store is located approximately a quarter-mile away, providing ice, firewood, snacks, and camping essentials.
  • Professional park rangers and maintenance staff are available to assist with site management and emergency services.

The highlights of Pine Grove Furnace go far beyond the campsite itself. The park is a living museum, and the group camping area puts you within walking distance of some of Pennsylvania's most interesting historical and natural landmarks. From the towering remains of the iron furnace stack to the tranquil waters of the lakes, there is a diverse range of activities to keep a large group engaged for several days. One unique feature often mentioned by local visitors is the Ironmaster's Mansion, a stunning 1829 brick building that serves as a hostel and event venue, adding a touch of architectural elegance to the rugged forest setting.

  • Direct access to the Appalachian Trail, including a visit to the Appalachian Trail Museum—the only museum of its kind in the United States.
  • Two sandy beaches at Fuller Lake and Laurel Lake, offering swimming opportunities from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
  • A diverse trail system including the Pole Steeple Overlook trail, which offers a rewarding view of the park from a quartzite rock outcropping.
  • Boating and fishing on the 25-acre Laurel Lake, where groups can rent kayaks and canoes or fish for stocked trout and bass.
  • Kid-friendly amenities including a playground and the flat, easy-to-walk Creek Trail that winds through the woods.
  • Proximity to the historic Ironmaster's Mansion, which is a "must-stop" for its informative history and beautiful Bridal Suite.
  • Wildlife viewing opportunities, as the park is home to a variety of native Pennsylvania species including white-tailed deer and numerous bird species.

For group leaders and organizers interested in reserving these facilities, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) manages the reservation system. It is highly recommended to book well in advance, especially for peak summer weekends or fall foliage season. You can reach the park office and the group camping coordinators using the following information:

  • Address: 1100 Pine Grove Rd, Gardners, PA 17324, USA
  • Phone: (717) 486-7174
  • Reservation Hotline: 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757)

What makes the Pine Grove Furnace group camping area worth choosing is the unparalleled opportunity for community building in a setting that is both historic and naturally beautiful. For many Pennsylvania youth groups, a trip to Pine Grove is a rite of passage, offering a safe environment to learn about the state's industrial past while gaining hands-on outdoor skills. It is worth choosing for the sheer scale of the facilities; having six dedicated sites that can hold nearly 200 people allows for massive regional gatherings that smaller parks simply cannot accommodate. Furthermore, the park's status as the midpoint of the Appalachian Trail gives it an international "outdoor cred" that inspires hikers of all ages. Whether your group is there to conquer the Pole Steeple climb, learn about the iron industry, or simply enjoy a quiet weekend by the lake, the tranquil atmosphere and clean, well-managed facilities make it a top-tier choice. Choosing this campground means you are choosing a place that is "special" in every sense of the word—a place where history, nature, and community come together perfectly.

Nice facilities but keep an eye on your kids. There was a teenager (peeping tom) watching our daughters in the showers.
