Richmond Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation RV Camp Introduce

Richmond Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) RV Camp offers a unique and highly secure camping experience specifically tailored for the military and Department of Defense (DOD) community. Located within the secure perimeter of the Defense Supply Center Richmond (DSCR), this RV park provides a no-frills, quiet retreat for those traveling through the Virginia region. For local residents of Virginia with installation access, or for those passing through the I-95 corridor, the camp serves as an essential resource for affordable short-term stays. The atmosphere is notably peaceful, characterized by the disciplined and orderly environment typical of a military installation, making it a preferred choice for travelers who prioritize safety and a quiet night's sleep over resort-style commercial amenities.

The campground is a "hidden gem" for those who qualify to use it. Managed by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) MWR program, the facility focuses on the fundamental needs of RVers. While it is a smaller site with a limited number of slots, the sense of community among fellow military and civilian DOD employees often leads to a welcoming, neighborly experience. The grounds are situated near interesting local features, including the famous small herd of elk that has been a fixture of the installation since the land was first acquired by the Army. This blend of military history and natural surprises makes the Richmond Family MWR RV Camp more than just a place to park; it is a safe harbor for those dedicated to serving the nation.

Location and Accessibility are two of the most significant factors that define the Richmond Family MWR RV Camp experience. The park is situated at G Road within the Defense Supply Center Richmond, conveniently located just minutes from major transit routes including I-95, Highway 288, and the heart of downtown Richmond. However, it is important for users to understand that this is a gated facility. Access is strictly limited to individuals with a valid DOD identification card or those who are valid guests of an ID card holder. To reach the camp, visitors typically enter through the North Gate (Visitor Center Gate) off Strathmore Road. After passing through the security checkpoint, staying on G Road will lead you past the helicopter display and storage lots directly to the RV sites. The park’s layout includes six individual spaces, featuring four back-in slots and two exceptionally long pull-through slots designed to accommodate larger rigs up to 65 feet or more.

Services Offered at the Richmond Family MWR RV Camp focus on providing the essential utilities needed for a self-contained RV lifestyle. While the camp does not offer sewer hookups at the individual sites, it provides several vital services to ensure a functional stay. The following services are currently available to eligible patrons:

  • Electrical hookups offering both 30-amp and 50-amp service for various RV sizes.
  • Dedicated RV water hookups providing fresh running water at each site.
  • A convenient sanitary dump station located near the park for easy waste management.
  • On-site public restrooms and public shower facilities for guest use.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity to help campers stay in touch with family or manage travel plans.
  • A modern payment system that accepts credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) for all camping fees.
  • On-site parking that is well-integrated with the camping slots for ease of access.
  • Administrative support from the MWR office, which manages reservations and provides site information via phone and email.

Features and Highlights of the campground reflect its location on a working military supply center. The environment is safe, well-patrolled by installation police, and surprisingly scenic given its industrial-logistics mission. Guests who stay here often appreciate the "best kept secret" nature of the park. Key features and highlights include:

  • Six spacious RV sites, including two very long pull-through slots that are easy to navigate for large coaches.
  • Picnic tables at each site, providing a designated space for outdoor dining and relaxation.
  • A screened-in gazebo available for communal use, offering a shaded retreat from the sun.
  • Dog-friendly policies that allow travelers to bring their well-behaved pets along for the journey.
  • Close proximity to unique installation sights, such as the historic Bellwood elk herd and static aircraft displays.
  • Year-round availability, making it a reliable stop for "snowbirds" traveling between the north and south.
  • Budget-friendly nightly rates that are significantly lower than nearby commercial RV resorts.
  • A high level of security provided by the gated entrance and regular military police patrols.

For those looking to secure a spot at the Richmond Family MWR RV Camp, it is essential to plan ahead. Reservations are typically handled on a first-come, first-served basis and must be coordinated through the MWR administrative offices. Given the secure nature of the base, having your documentation ready before arrival is vital for a smooth check-in process.

What is worth choosing about the Richmond Family MWR RV Camp is the peace of mind that comes with its unique setting. For many Virginia-based military families or visiting retirees, the primary draw is the unparalleled security of being on a gated installation. In a world where finding a safe and quiet place to park an expensive RV can be a challenge, this campground offers a controlled environment where you can rest without the typical noise or safety concerns of roadside parks. The value for the price is exceptional, allowing travelers to save on lodging costs while remaining within a short drive of the cultural and historical attractions of Richmond, such as the Virginia State Capitol or the James River.

Furthermore, the responsiveness of the MWR staff makes it worth choosing for those who prefer clear communication and professional management. While the facility is described as "no-frills," the attention to detail in the reservation process and the presence of essential amenities like 50-amp power and clean water make it a highly practical choice. If you are a DOD ID holder who values a straightforward, secure, and quiet camping experience near the state capital, this RV park is an excellent option to consider. Whether you are staying for a single night while passing through on I-95 or using it as a base to visit local military heritage sites, the Richmond Family MWR RV Camp provides a reliable and respectable home on the road.

MWR RV CampgroundThis is a mixed bag review, overall, the campground gets poor marks for lack of maintenance but with so few options in the area it's not all bad and is budget friendly. If you know what to expect you'll have a better experience. Let's get into it, the good, price and location if you need something close to Richmond, VA that won't break the bank. It's secure and police ride through about twice a day and you're on a gated base so you do need Military or DOD ID to access the base. There is no playground for amenities just power and water (except site #6 the power is not working) there's no sewer at the site but there is a dump station. The #1 thing to remember if you stay here is you must stay on the gravel; any area not graveled is super soft and wet. We saw some deep ruts where somebody didn't stay on the gravel and I'd be surprised if they didn't have to get pulled out. Along with that is standing water, it's really bad at site #5, the bench for that site was completely surrounded by water the whole time we were there (10 days). The phone number on the site sign to call if you have a problem "is no longer in service" I was in site #6 for a day and a half, the day after we got there the power went out, we called the office number on the email confirmation and the nice guy that answered said take site #1 it was available the whole time we were there, the power came back on so we stayed put. 2 days later (a Saturday, no one in the office) the power gave up, in my efforts to find the problem I determined the receptacle was no longer mounted correctly and the circuit breaker was probably worn out. When I would plug into the pedestal I could see the receptacle and breaker move, I tried the 30 amp and it did not feel like there were any contacts inside, to 20 amp worked fine. We moved to site #1 and left a message with the office. We didn't hear from the office on Monday so email them Tuesday morning to let them know what I thought was wrong in case the could get someone out to fix the pedestal before the next camper arrived on Saturday. The good thing about sites 5 & 6 is that they are long and have enough gravel to level your rig. Site 1 was crowned quite a bit, so much so that my outer drive tire was not touching the ground. On the other side the entry door was basically over a low wet spot, so we were tracking wet grass into the coach every time we came in, even with a mat at the door. I's not all bad, it was quiet. If you need a spot to overnight or stay a couple of days it's not bad. I can't say that I wouldn't stay here again but I'll to find another place first.

As a full-timer for 2 years, I'm pretty in tune with what constitutes good CG customer service. The manager of this CG doesn't have it. I tried making reservations four months out, and he didn't return phone calls. He finally replied to an email, telling me I had to submit a form to make the reservation. OK, no problem. I found the form on the website and emailed it to him. Then he emails me back and tells me that one is outdated, and I have to resubmit with the attached one. Guess he couldn't be bothered to post the correct one. So I resubmit and finally get a site.On arrival day, my wife calls him to reconfirm our site number. He tells her we can only stay two nights, then have to move to another site. No explanation, no compensation for the hassle, and no prior notification that we needed to change sites. The next day I go to the MWR office to discuss this with him. He's not there (has 4 jobs on base and apparently CG is lowest priority), so I call him. Turns out he's making me move just so another person can get into our site on our last night. I tell him that's not right, and I want a free night if I have to move. After checking with his supervisior, presto, he emails me back saying that I can stay all three nights in the same site. I guess the lesson for others is to trust but verify at this campground! As for the CG itself, it's a bit overpriced at $30/night without sewer hookups. The entrance is unmarked and the site numbers are hard to read. There are six fairly spaced out sites in total, of which, two are pull through. All sites are grass/gravel mix with 50A electric and water. The dump station is about 100 yards away, in between the RV storage lots. You can drive there without getting on the main road. No bathroom or bath house. There is no PX, commissary or gas station on the base. It's a very quiet base of mostly civilian personnel, so it's pretty quiet all the time.

Great location to visit with our daughter, son in law, and newborn granddaughter; and stay in the RV Camp minimizing disruption of home life with their first child. The DSCR/DDRV installation is about 8 miles from their apartment in Richmond. Plenty of pull-thru room for our A-class RV, trailer and SUV. A super quiet post with lots of warehouses, a collection of military aviation artifacts displayed here-and-there, and a unique history that accounts for a small herd of elk still in residence.

No septic hookups, no amenities nearby, our site was swamped out and no one answered phones. During the summer I have to imagine this place would be teeming with insects, but during the winter it was at least somewhat peaceful. Train horns in the distance only ruined that a little bit. $30 a night is terribly overpriced without septic hookups.
