Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc Introduce

For New Yorkers looking to escape the relentless energy of the city without sacrificing comfort, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc stands as a premier destination in the heart of the Catskills. Located in the charming town of Saugerties, this 160-acre woodland paradise has been family-owned and operated since 1966, now welcoming its third generation of campers. It offers a rare blend of rugged natural beauty—highlighted by a full mile of frontage along the crystal-clear Plattekill Creek—and an extensive array of modern amenities that ensure even the most "indoor" family members feel right at home. Whether you are looking to pitch a tent under a canopy of ancient oaks or pull in a luxury big rig, this campground provides a curated outdoor experience designed for creating lifelong memories.

The atmosphere at Rip Van Winkle is one of joyful activity balanced by deep tranquility. During the week, the grounds are remarkably peaceful, offering a serene environment for remote workers or those seeking a quiet retreat. However, when the weekend arrives, the park transforms into a vibrant community hub. The campground is famous for its themed weekends, such as "Christmas in July" and elaborate Halloween celebrations, which draw families back year after year. The meticulous maintenance of the grounds, from the spotless private showers to the well-manicured "Fun Zones," reflects a high level of professional care that sets this facility apart from more primitive state-run sites. For local New Yorkers, it represents a reliable, safe, and engaging "home away from home" just a short drive up the Hudson Valley.

Location and accessibility are major draws for regional visitors. Situated at 149 Blue Mountain Road in Saugerties, NY, the campground is easily accessible via the New York State Thruway (I-87), making it a convenient three-hour trip from New York City or a quick jaunt from Albany. The property is designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances, a dedicated parking lot, and ADA-compliant restroom facilities. The park utilizes modern security measures, including license plate reading cameras and bar-coded gates, which provide peace of mind for parents and pet owners alike. Once inside, guests will find wide, well-maintained gravel roads that are navigable for most vehicle types, though large RV owners are encouraged to follow the provided park map carefully to manage some of the more authentic, wooded turns.

The services offered at Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds are comprehensive, catering to a wide spectrum of camping styles. For the RV enthusiast, the park offers 166 sites ranging from basic electric and water hookups to premium full-service sites that include sewer, 30/50 amp electric, and digital cable TV. Tent campers are not overlooked, with spacious, shaded sites—many located directly along the banks of the creek. Onsite services include a well-stocked general store for essentials, a snack shack for quick bites, and even a propane filling station. Payment is made easy through contemporary options including credit cards, debit cards, and NFC mobile payments, ensuring a seamless transaction process for all camping fees.

  • Full RV camping accommodations with 30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups.
  • Dedicated tent sites including premium waterfront options along Plattekill Creek.
  • On-site general store providing firewood, propane, ice, and camping supplies.
  • Clean, private restrooms and hot showers with individual dressing rooms.

  • Free WiFi and over 100 channels of cable TV at many sites.

The features and highlights of the campground are what truly make it a "Fun Zone" for all ages. Children are treated to an endless list of activities, including a heated inground pool, a remote-control (RC) car track with a rock crawling course, and an "old-fashioned" swimming hole in the creek. One of the most iconic sights is "Pickles," a 38-foot-tall metal dinosaur that has been a park staple since 1994 and delights kids by spraying water. For pet owners, the inclusion of a dedicated dog park and pet-wash station ensures that four-legged family members are as pampered as their owners. Nature lovers can enjoy catch-and-release fishing in the on-site pond or take a hike on the property's internal trail system that winds through the dense forest and along the water's edge.

  • Heated swimming pool and a natural swimming hole for cooling off in the summer.
  • Eleven designated "Fun Zones" including mini-golf, an arcade, and a bounce house.
  • Professional R/C track and rock crawling course for hobbyists.
  • Picturesque Plattekill Creek access for wading, tubing, and spotting local wildlife.
  • Regularly scheduled hayrides with music and festive themed weekend events.
  • A fully fenced dog park where pets can run freely and safely.
  • Outdoor movie theater for family cinema nights under the stars.
  • Paddle boat rentals for exploring the serene campground pond.

To plan your visit or inquire about seasonal site availability, you can contact the campground office directly. Given its popularity for major local events like the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival, early reservations are highly recommended, especially for waterfront sites. What is worth choosing about Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds is the sheer variety and quality of the experience. It is worth choosing for the "Rivers Edge" sites, where you can fall asleep to the sound of the creek and wake up to a view that feels entirely isolated from the world. It is also an excellent choice for families with children who need constant engagement; between the "Pickles" dinosaur, the pool, and the daily activities, there is never a dull moment. Furthermore, the commitment to cleanliness and security makes it a top-tier choice for those who want a "hassle-free" outdoor vacation. If you are looking for a place that respects the quiet traditions of camping while offering the fun of a modern resort, this Saugerties gem is arguably the best RV and family campground in the Catskill region.

In conclusion, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc offers a quintessential New York camping experience that bridges the gap between the wild and the comfortable. It provides a space where you can be as active or as relaxed as you choose, all while being surrounded by some of the most beautiful terrain the Hudson Valley has to offer. From the friendly staff to the impeccably kept facilities, every detail is managed with the care that only a family-run business can provide. For any New Yorker seeking a reliable and joyful escape, a trip to this woodland paradise is highly recommended. Rip Van Winkle campground is such a special place! My family and I have been visiting the campground for the past five years and we’ve always enjoyed each trip. The grounds are a mix of nature and comfort, from the beautiful, crystal clear Plattekill Creek and shaded sites, to the well stocked camp store and snack shack, private showers, heated pool, and endless activities. Rips is the kind of campground that you never want to leave, once there! We have stayed in both cabins and tent camped and always look for sites along the creek. We have made wonderful memories during their exciting themed weekends like their Christmas in July or their incredible Halloween weekend, but have also marveled at how quiet and peaceful the grounds are during the weekdays. Such a great family campground our family has come to love!

The best! We stay here frequently. The sites are private, spacious and well kept, with plenty of trees to hang a hammock. There isn't a bad site in the whole place! Plenty of amenities for the kids - heated pool, mini golf, arcade, pond, paddle boats, bounce house, playgrounds, river, ice cream, train, hayride. The list goes on and almost all are included with no additional fees! The staff is all friendly and everything is clean. We love it!

Great spot with lots of amenities and friendly staff. Called last minute trying to find a place to park my camper van overnight and they were extremely helpful in getting me a plot. Showers are hot and clean, trails are maintained and while I didn't use many of the amenities there are a lot. Laundry on site, mini golf, a pool and plenty of other things if you bring kids. It's very RV/Camper centric but they have plots in the back for cars/vans/tents. Much reccomended and would stop again if in the area. Extra shout out to Daria in the front office, she is so kind and a huge help.

The campground is nice, but that snack shack is really what blew my mind. That was a really good burger. The mozzarella sticks were so good. They tasted like homemade everything was fried perfectly cooked perfectly. The juice level on the burger was perfect hats off to the couple in the kitchen at the snack shack Really made my afternoon. ;)

This is one of the best campgrounds I have been in recently. The sites are large and level. They are also spaced far enough apart to provide privacy. The roads were well maintained. All facilities were clean and well kept. The staff were professional and friendly. I highly recommend Rip van Winkle campground.
