Riverside Park Campground Introduce

For New York residents looking to trade the hum of the city for the gentle murmur of flowing water, Riverside Park Campground in Wellsville offers a quintessential upstate experience. Nestled along the banks of the Genesee River in the "Western NY Wilds" of Allegany County, this woman-owned campground provides a sanctuary for those who appreciate nature's simple pleasures. Whether you are arriving with a high-end RV or a humble tent, the atmosphere here is one of quiet hospitality and rural charm. The campground is particularly famous for its role during the Greater Wellsville Trout Derby and the spectacular Wellsville Hot Air Balloon Rally, making it a seasonal hub for both adventure and relaxation.

What sets Riverside Park Campground apart is its unique position on a large point bar, surrounded by lush hardwood trees that offer natural privacy and shade. Local campers often speak of the "Grumpy Field" and other secluded nooks where you can back your camper toward the woods, creating a private oasis that feels miles away from anyone else. The site is managed with a personal touch that reflects its family-oriented roots, ensuring that every guest—from solo anglers to families with young children—feels welcome. It is a place where you can spend your morning watching eagles soar over the river and your evenings gathered around a safe, open campfire under a canopy of stars.

Location and accessibility are major draws for this destination. Riverside Park Campground is conveniently located at 3541 Riverside Dr, Wellsville, NY 14895. It sits on the west side of Route 19, approximately two miles north of the village of Wellsville and a short drive from Scio. Its central position in the Southern Tier makes it an easy drive for residents of Buffalo, Rochester, or Corning seeking a weekend retreat. For those attending local events, it is just a short trip to Island Park, the launch site for the region's famous hot air balloons. The campground features a wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking lot, ensuring that the beauty of the Genesee River is accessible to all visitors. Furthermore, the drive-in access is straightforward, accommodating larger RV rigs with ease.

The services offered at Riverside Park Campground are diverse, catering to a wide range of outdoor interests. As a multi-functional facility, it serves as a traditional campground, an RV park, and even a canoe and kayak rental service. Key services include:

  • Full-service RV camping with electric, water, and sewer hookups for convenient stays.
  • Spacious, rustic tent sites for those who prefer a traditional back-to-nature experience.
  • Canoe and kayak rentals for exploring the northward-flowing Genesee River directly from the park.
  • Fishing camp facilities, providing prime access to riverbanks stocked with trout and bass.
  • Clean, separate full-size shower and bathroom facilities for both men and women.
  • On-site parking and a professional management office that accepts major credit and debit cards.
  • Pet-friendly policies, with leashed dogs (excluding certain breeds) welcome to enjoy the vast green spaces.

Beyond the basic services, the campground is packed with features and highlights that make every visit memorable. From recreational sports to quiet nature trails, there is something to engage every member of the family. Highlights include:

  • The scenic Genesee River frontage, perfect for watching wildlife like deer, rabbits, and migratory birds.
  • A dedicated playground area, basketball hoop, and volleyball court for active kids and teens.
  • A regulation horseshoe pit and a covered picnic pavilion for community gatherings and shade.
  • Proximity to local attractions like the Wellsville Creative Arts Center, the David A. Howe Public Library, and the world-famous Cuba Cheese Shop.
  • Access to the annual Wellsville Balloon Rally, where campers can watch colorful balloons drift directly overhead.
  • A peaceful "island" area created by an oxbow in the river, featuring trails perfect for nature walks and exploring local plant life.
  • Diverse rental options including cozy cabins and a chalet for those who want the camping experience without the tent or RV.

If you are ready to book your spot or have questions about the upcoming season, the staff at Riverside Park Campground is readily available. The park typically opens in April to coincide with the trout derby and remains active through mid-October. It is always a good idea to call ahead during major event weekends like the Balloon Rally to secure your preferred site.

When considering where to spend your leisure time in Upstate New York, Riverside Park Campground is worth choosing for its rare blend of tranquility and convenience. Unlike larger, more corporate RV resorts, this park maintains a quiet, respectful atmosphere where "quiet hours" are truly honored, allowing you to hear the owls at night and the birds at dawn. It is worth choosing for its river access alone; being able to launch a kayak or cast a line just steps from your sleeping quarters is a luxury that few inland campgrounds can match. The dedication of the owners to continuous improvement ensures that the facilities remain clean and the grounds well-kept.

Additionally, its value as a home base for exploring Allegany County is unmatched. You are positioned perfectly between the local culture of Wellsville and the broader recreational opportunities of the Western NY Wilds. Whether you are there to participate in a high-stakes fishing derby, witness the magic of hot air balloons, or simply "unplug" from a busy work life, Riverside Park Campground provides the space and the scenery to make it happen. By choosing this locally owned gem, you are not just booking a campsite; you are choosing an authentic New York experience that celebrates the beauty of our state's natural waterways and the warmth of our rural communities.

We stayed at Riverside Campground during the Wellsville Hot Air Balloon rally 2025. I have to say the owner Cathy was extremely kind and easy to talk to. Our campsite was in Grumpy Field w electric hookup, we got the back corner site in the shade of the trees & backed our camper to face away from the other campers making us feel like we were the only ones camping there. It was an amazing weekend, super quiet Campground, enjoyed watching Butterflies, birds & chipmunks. Was a short drive to Island Park where the hot air balloons were launched. We recommend Riverside for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.

We love this campground! Full hook ups along the quiet, Allegheny River. Listen to the birds, watch eagles soar up and down the river, hear owls at night. Relax in a kayak floating down river or fish along the banks. Walk the paths along the campground and see rabbits, deer and other wildlife. There is a playground, basketball and volleyball area for kids. Lots of green space for dogs. If you enjoy a quiet escape from the business of life, you want to camp here. Located between Olean and Portville, if you are looking for more things to do. The rates are reasonable. Don't have a camper and not big on tent camping, there are also 2 cabins and a chalet to rent. New owners continually are working to improve the campground and your experience.

Sweet, quiet relaxing place right on the river. Nice place to recharge and simply walk around. Owner is wonderful. She genuinely cares about her campers and will go out of her way to make you feel welcome. Great water pressure. All types of hook-ups to accommodate everyone. Shady and sunny spots. Convenient to town: grocery stores, gas, little shops.

Love this place! We originally reserved a 2 week space in Cuba at Misty Mountain, what a mistake. Stayed 2 nights and was not getting what we paid for (full hook up and not the space we reserved) and owner was not accommodating (not nice) so we were on the look out for a new location. We found Riverside Park and just like that we were moving. What a great choice! Cathy has been so kind and a joy to talk with. We stayed 2 weeks then stayed on for another 2 weeks. So we've been here for a month and still don't want to leave.😒 Would recommend this campground and we will definitely be back!!
