Rock Run Campground Introduce
Rock Run Campground, nestled within the sprawling beauty of Gambrill State Park, offers a premier outdoor experience for residents of Maryland looking to escape into the woods without traveling far from home. Located on the ridge of the Catoctin Mountains, this campground serves as a gateway to some of the most stunning views in Frederick County. The park is uniquely divided into two distinct sections: the High Knob area, known for its breathtaking overlooks, and the Rock Run area, which houses the cozy, family-oriented campground. For local Marylanders, Rock Run represents the perfect blend of rugged mountain terrain and accessible modern amenities, making it a favorite for weekend getaways and seasonal retreats alike.
The atmosphere at Rock Run is one of peaceful immersion. Surrounded by unbroken forests that provide habitat for diverse wildlife, including pileated woodpeckers and the occasional black bear, the campground feels worlds away from the urban centers of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Despite its secluded feel, it is professionally maintained by the Maryland Park Service, with frequent ranger patrols that ensure a safe and orderly environment. Whether you are looking to spend your days conquering miles of mountain bike trails or your evenings roasting marshmallows by a stone fire ring, Rock Run provides a quintessential Maryland camping experience that celebrates the natural heritage of the region.
Location and accessibility are major draws for Rock Run Campground. Situated at 8002 Gambrill Park Road in Frederick, the park is easily reached via U.S. Route 40 and I-70, making it highly accessible for visitors coming from anywhere in the state. The campground is designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking lots. The central bathhouse is also ADA-compliant, providing accessible restrooms and shower facilities. While the mountain terrain is naturally rugged, the campground loops are paved, allowing for easier navigation. It is important to note that the park is popular and often reaches capacity early on summer weekends, so Maryland residents are encouraged to make use of the state's reservation system well in advance.
The campground is strategically positioned near the trailhead parking area, which serves as the jumping-off point for over 16 miles of trails. These paths range from the easy, kid-friendly "White Oak" trail to more strenuous loops that challenge experienced hikers and mountain bikers. For those who prefer a scenic drive, the proximity to the High Knob overlooks provides instant gratification with panoramic views of the Frederick and Middletown Valleys. The convenience of being just six miles from the heart of historic Frederick means that campers are never more than a few minutes away from local restaurants, craft breweries, and emergency supplies if needed.

Choosing Rock Run Campground is a decision to embrace the authentic outdoor spirit of Maryland. It is worth choosing because it provides a "small-park" feel with "big-park" amenities. Unlike larger, more sprawling campgrounds, Rock Run’s 34 sites are arranged in a way that fosters a sense of community while still offering the privacy of a heavily wooded setting. The fact that the bathhouses are heated and offer genuinely hot water is a luxury often missing from state park experiences, making it an excellent choice for camping during the cooler spring and autumn months.
Furthermore, the value of the park's location cannot be overstated. It offers the rare ability to be deep in the mountain forest in the morning and enjoying a gourmet dinner in downtown Frederick by evening. For families, the "kid-friendly" aspects—from the fishing pond to the gentle hiking loops—make it an stress-free environment for introducing children to the wonders of nature. When you choose Rock Run at Gambrill State Park, you are choosing a location that has been a destination for generations of Marylanders, supported by a rich history of conservation and a commitment to providing a high-quality, accessible experience for all.

Nice campground. For RVers, dry camping is the norm here and if your travel trailer is much over 20 feet, you will have a hard time at this campground.
A great campsite with all the amenities. Bathrooms and showers are clean and ready to use. Bathrooms are heated and water gets HOT. Park Rangers stroll through frequently if needed. Plenty of space and plenty of different varieties I’ve included pictures of all the spots near us because there wasn’t detailed ones of each spot.
Nice quiet campground only some of the sites have electric. Bathrooms are clean. We used it as a location to sleep and see things in the area.
Beautiful campground! The pictures posted don't do it justice. It's quiet and peaceful yet so close to town. Bathrooms are clean and camp spots are not too close together. Not all spots have electric hook ups.
Clean quiet camping. Good value. A downside is that there is only one smallish bathhouse for the entire campground. It might be a long walk from your site. Great cell phone reception but that also means you are close to roads.
