Rothrock State Forest Campsite #1 Introduce

For those who find solace in the rustle of leaves and the crackle of a campfire, Rothrock State Forest Campsite #1 offers an authentic retreat into the heart of the Pennsylvania wilderness. Located near the quiet community of Barree, this campsite is a quintessential example of the "roadside" or "motorized" primitive camping experience that the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) provides for outdoor enthusiasts. Spanning over 96,000 acres across Huntingdon, Centre, and Mifflin counties, Rothrock State Forest serves as a rugged playground for hikers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers who want to leave the modern world behind for a few nights under the stars.

Campsite #1 is specifically designed for travelers who prefer a singular, remote setting rather than the crowded rows of a commercial RV park. It offers a "back-to-basics" atmosphere where the focus remains entirely on the environment. Whether you are a local Pennsylvanian seeking a quick weekend getaway or a traveler exploring the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian Mountains, this site provides a rare opportunity to enjoy the forest's wild character while still having the convenience of vehicle access. It is a place where time slows down, and the only schedule is dictated by the rising and setting of the sun over the Tussey Mountain ridges.

Location and Accessibility are primary considerations for anyone heading to Rothrock State Forest. Campsite #1 is located in the Barree area of Pennsylvania (Zip Code 16611), providing a remote feel while being accessible to those in the central region of the state. Getting to the site involves navigating typical state forest roads, which are often composed of dirt and gravel. These roads are well-maintained during the warmer months but can be narrow and winding, offering a true sense of adventure before you even arrive at your destination. It is important to note that while the site is vehicle-accessible, state forest roads are not plowed or maintained during the winter, meaning access is never guaranteed during the snowy season.

  • Situated within the expansive Rothrock State Forest near the village of Barree.
  • Accessible via well-graded forest roads suitable for most standard vehicles during the summer and fall.
  • Located in close proximity to major local landmarks like Trough Creek State Park and the Juniata River.
  • Site is set back from the main forest road to provide a sense of privacy and seclusion.
  • Proximity to world-class trail systems, including the Mid State Trail and Standing Stone Trail.

Services Offered at Rothrock State Forest Campsite #1 are intentionally limited to preserve the primitive nature of the experience. Unlike developed state park campgrounds, there are no electric hookups, water taps, or sewer connections. This is a "carry-in, carry-out" facility, meaning campers must be fully self-sufficient and responsible for every item they bring into the woods. The services focus on providing the fundamental elements of a campsite—a flat spot to rest and a safe place for a fire—while leaving the rest to the camper's ingenuity and preparation.

  • Single designated campsite available by reservation only.
  • Primitive tent pad area and ample flat ground for various camping setups.
  • Standard stone fire ring for managed campfires (subject to seasonal bans).
  • Heavy-duty wooden picnic table for dining and gear organization.
  • Motorized/Roadside camping permits issued through the PA State Parks and Forests reservation system.
  • Access to nearly 300 miles of shared-use trails throughout the surrounding forest.

Features and Highlights of Campsite #1 make it a favorite for those who value tranquility and nature-focused recreation. One of the most noted features of this specific site is its spacious clearing, which is "set a ways back off the road," providing a buffer from the occasional passing vehicle. The surrounding forest is a lush canopy of hardwoods and pines, home to a diverse array of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and the occasional black bear. For families, the site is a fantastic "classroom without walls" where children can learn about forestry, navigation, and the principles of Leave No Trace in a safe, designated environment.

  • Large, well-maintained clearing with multiple flat spots for tents or small trailers.
  • Direct access to diverse hiking trails suitable for both casual walks and strenuous treks.
  • Excellent birdwatching opportunities within the dense forest interior.
  • Strategic location for exploring nearby natural wonders like the "Indian Steps" or local overlooks.
  • Family-friendly atmosphere that is rated as "good for kids" due to the open space and safety of the designated site.
  • Close to pristine mountain streams perfect for fishing or simply enjoying the sound of flowing water.

Contact Information is essential for ensuring your trip goes smoothly, as camping at designated roadside sites in Rothrock requires a permit. Reservations can be made up to eleven months in advance, and it is highly recommended to book early for weekends, especially during the autumn foliage season or when there are events in nearby State College. The forest is managed by the District #5 office of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry.

What is worth choosing about Rothrock State Forest Campsite #1 is the rare balance it strikes between isolation and accessibility. While many primitive sites require miles of backpacking, Campsite #1 allows you to bring the comforts of your car-camping gear while still feeling completely immersed in the "wilds" of Pennsylvania. It is an ideal choice for those who want to avoid the noise and light pollution of more modern campgrounds. The site’s reputation for being well-maintained—complete with its fire ring and picnic table—means you spend less time site-prepping and more time exploring the hundreds of miles of trails that make Rothrock a premier destination for hikers and mountain bikers.

Choosing this site also means supporting the sustainable management of Pennsylvania's "working forests." By following the rules—such as using only dead and down wood for fires and respecting seasonal fire bans—you contribute to the preservation of a landscape that has been protected since the early 20th century. For Pennsylvanians, Rothrock is more than just a forest; it is a testament to the state's commitment to conservation. Whether you are looking for a quiet place to read a book by the fire or a basecamp for a multi-day hiking adventure to the fire towers and overlooks, Campsite #1 in Barree is a location that truly embodies the spirit of the Keystone State's great outdoors.

The camp site is well maintained with a fire ring and picnic table. Large clearing set a ways back off the road with plenty of flat spots. Only down side is there is a bit of traffic on the road and there are private cabins near by. Overall, still a quiet and enjoyable camp site with plenty to do in the local area.

Rothrock is BEAUTIFUL! We camped in one of the forest sites and hiked in Trough Creek State Park to the falls. Beautiful area for family gatherings and picnics. Will return for sure!

We loved it. Arrived Friday afternoon and planned to stay until Monday morning but heavy rain we didn't expect with a new tent that leaked, we had to pack up and leave Sunday evening. We had no internet service to check the weather. But we still had a great time just getting away.
