Rothrock State Forest Campsite #6 Introduce

For those living in or visiting Central Pennsylvania, the call of the wild is often answered within the vast, 96,000-acre expanse of the Rothrock State Forest. Among its many hidden treasures, Rothrock State Forest Campsite #6 stands out as a premier destination for local outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a more authentic, "off-the-grid" experience. Located near the charming community of Reedsville, this campsite is not a commercial park with rows of RVs and neon signs; instead, it is a designated motorized primitive site that offers a rare blend of seclusion and accessibility for those who want to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Appalachian ridges.

Rothrock State Forest is named after Dr. Joseph Trimble Rothrock, a native of Mifflin County and Pennsylvania's first forestry commissioner, often hailed as the "Father of Forestry" in the commonwealth. Campsite #6 honors this legacy by providing a space where nature remains the primary focus. The site is characterized by its large, open, oval-shaped layout, which provides a sense of freedom and space rarely found in modern campgrounds. Whether you are looking to set up a base camp for a weekend of intense mountain biking or simply want a quiet clearing to pitch a tent and watch the stars, this location delivers the quintessential Pennsylvania woodland experience.

The campsite is officially located in Reedsville, PA 17084, but its true home is deep within the forest infrastructure. To reach this secluded spot, local users typically take the PA-655 exit from US-322 toward Reedsville. The journey involves navigating a series of well-maintained but unpaved surfaces, including Woodland Road and Coopers Gap Road, before finally turning onto Flat Road. It is important for visitors to understand that access is primarily via gravel forestry roads. While these roads are generally fine for standard vehicles during the summer, they can be steep and winding, providing a sense of true mountain travel.

One unique aspect of Site #6 is that it is situated behind an unlocked metal gate, which management requests visitors keep closed. This adds an extra layer of privacy and discourages casual through-traffic. The site features a pull-in driveway approximately 360 feet in length, leading to a flat, side-by-side parking area. For those planning a visit during the winter months, it is vital to note that Pennsylvania state forest roads are not plowed or maintained for snow. During this time, the site becomes a true wilderness challenge, accessible only to those with appropriate four-wheel-drive equipment and advanced winter backcountry skills.

  • Designated tent sites and space for small campers or trailers within a motorized primitive setting.
  • Individual campsite amenities including a heavy-duty picnic table and a stone fire ring.
  • On-site parking with enough room for multiple vehicles, making it ideal for group meet-ups.
  • Access to nearly 300 miles of shared-use trails for hiking and mountain biking directly from the forest road system.
  • Pet-friendly accommodations, allowing dogs to join the adventure provided they remain under control.
  • Motorized camping permit services, which are required for all overnight stays at this designated site.
  • A "Pack-In, Pack-Out" refuse system to ensure the forest remains pristine and free of litter.
  • Large, open oval clearing that provides excellent privacy from the road while remaining accessible by vehicle.
  • Outstanding stargazing opportunities thanks to the open sky above the camp, free from the light pollution of nearby towns.
  • Excellent "hammocking" potential, with plenty of sturdy hardwoods located just a few yards into the woods surrounding the main camp.
  • Proximity to the Coopers Gap trail network, a world-class destination for technical singletrack mountain biking.
  • Child-friendly environment with plenty of flat space for kids to play and explore the natural surroundings safely.
  • A quiet, serene atmosphere that is perfect for "getting away from it all" and reconnecting with the local ecosystem.
  • Historical and natural proximity to local landmarks like the Alan Seeger Natural Area and the Mid State Trail.

To stay at Rothrock State Forest Campsite #6, a permit is required, as is the case for all motorized roadside camping in Pennsylvania State Forests. You can secure a reservation online through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. For specific questions regarding forest conditions or local regulations, you can contact the Rothrock State Forest District Office at (814) 643-2340. The physical address for GPS navigation is 20 Flat Road, Reedsville, PA 17084, USA, though users are strongly encouraged to carry a physical "Purple Lizard" or DCNR map, as cell service is notoriously unreliable in the mountains.

What makes Campsite #6 particularly worth choosing is its versatility. For the local Pennsylvania mountain biking community, it serves as an unparalleled base camp. Being situated so close to the Coopers Gap trails means you can be on high-quality technical singletrack within minutes of waking up. Unlike some of the tighter, more constrained sites in the forest, the open layout here comfortably accommodates groups, making it a favorite for friends who want to set up multiple tents without feeling crowded.

Additionally, the site is a dream for those who value the "dark sky" experience. While many campsites are buried under a thick canopy that blocks the view of the heavens, the oval clearing at Site #6 provides a window to the cosmos. On a clear Pennsylvania night, the view of the Milky Way is spectacular. When you combine this with the fact that it is dog-friendly and family-oriented, Site #6 becomes one of the most well-rounded primitive sites in the region. If you are willing to trade modern luxuries like running water and electricity for fresh mountain air and the scent of hemlock, this Rothrock gem is the perfect place to hang your hammock.

Very nice open but private area to set up multiple camps/tents. Although you are surrounded by trees there is plenty of open sky for stargazing on a clear night. There are several hiking and biking trails nearby. Pets are welcome too! Rothrock is a great place to reconnect with nature. (Plenty of trees for hammocks)

Large, open oval with plenty of space for tents or camper, ample parking. Has a firepit and picnic table. This is a great site for a group of mountain bikers or folks that just want to get away from it all and hang out in the woods. One trail nearby, but the views and landmarks are limited at this location. I slept in a hammock just off the main camp. Plenty of places to hang around the camp as long as your willing to go a few yards into the woods. If your a family looking to use this as a base camp for visiting the surrounding area, be advised that access is by gravel roads. If you don't mind the gravel, mountain road drives, then your good. If your mode of transportation is a bike, then make sure the miles and elevations are to your liking. If your a mountain biker, then get it.

Nice campsite but it's very open. Not many trees to hang a hammock or to hang a tarp to get out of the rain if need be. Nice fire ring and only one picnic table for such a large site. Plenty of parking. There is no restroom or playground. Rustic at it's finest.

Great spot for a large group to get to explore Cooper's Gap as a hub. Plenty of space to Park and place tents. Has a fire pit and picnic table. Would recommend a Pop up tent for dry space in case of rain for cooking or eating.
