Shady Point Beach & Campground Introduce
For residents of the Commonwealth looking for a classic lakeside summer, Shady Point Beach & Campground in Lunenburg offers a nostalgic and vibrant escape. Situated on the shores of the 354-acre Lake Shirley, this family-owned destination has been a staple of Central Massachusetts for over a century. For more than 58 years, the DeFazio family has managed the grounds, creating a space where generations of Massachusetts families have gathered to swim, fish, and celebrate the warmer months. Whether you are a local from the Montachusett region or traveling from the Greater Boston area, Shady Point provides a rare opportunity to access private beachfront and extensive water recreation just an hour west of the city.
The atmosphere at Shady Point is designed around the traditional American summer. The property operates as a multifaceted recreation center, serving as a seasonal campground, a private beach club, and a premier picnic ground. Because much of the camping is geared toward seasonal residents, a strong sense of community exists among the regulars, who take pride in the clean and quiet environment. It is a place where professional management meets a family-first philosophy, prioritizing a safe and orderly experience for visitors. From the gentle ripples of the lake at dawn to the social hum of mid-day barbecues, the campground captures the essence of a Massachusetts outdoor retreat.
Location and Accessibility
Shady Point Beach & Campground is located at 701 Reservoir Rd, Lunenburg, MA 01462, USA. This location is particularly strategic for Massachusetts travelers, as it is conveniently positioned between the hubs of Fitchburg, Leominster, and Shirley. For local users, the campground is easily reached via Route 2 or Route 13, making it a simple day trip or a stress-free commute for those who hold seasonal memberships. The facility is situated across from Ben Normandin Park, nestled in a pocket of Lunenburg that feels deeply rural despite its proximity to local shopping and dining centers.
Accessibility is a key feature of the grounds, ensuring that the lakeside experience is inclusive for all. The campground offers a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a dedicated parking lot with accessible spaces. The main facilities, including restrooms and certain beach access points, are designed to accommodate those with mobility needs. For those bringing their own watercraft, the on-site boat launch is accessible for registered members and day-pass holders (subject to fees), providing one of the most convenient entry points to Lake Shirley. On-site parking is organized to manage peak weekend traffic, though visitors are encouraged to arrive early on hot summer days as the lot can reach capacity during popular holiday weekends.

What is Worth Choosing
What makes Shady Point Beach & Campground worth choosing is the unparalleled access it provides to Lake Shirley, one of the region's largest and most active bodies of water. For a Massachusetts family, the value of a seasonal membership can be significant, offering a "private club" feel that ensures the beach remains safe, clean, and never overly crowded. While the rules are strictly enforced—such as the "no pets" policy on the beach and the 5 MPH speed limit—these regulations are precisely what maintain the park's reputation as a quiet and orderly family environment. It is the ideal choice for those who want a structured camping experience where respect for neighbors and nature is a top priority.
Furthermore, the variety of the property makes it worth the trip. You can spend the morning fishing in a quiet cove, the afternoon lounging on a raft at the sandy beach, and the evening grilling a meal with your family while watching the sunset over the reservoir. For boaters, the dock rentals and easy launch access eliminate the hassle typically associated with public ramps. By choosing Shady Point, you are not just picking a place to park a trailer; you are opting into a century-old tradition of Massachusetts lakeside living where the staff knows your name and the water is always just a few steps away. If you value a well-maintained, private environment for your summer memories, this Lunenburg landmark is a standout option.

Customer Reviews
This review is not about the camp ground per se but the lake it offers access to. Boat ramp is a nightmare and prices recently jumped up for no real reason. Some real looney residents on the lakefront that don’t mind harassing anglers (which is illegal, by the way). Fishing itself is decently ok, but be prepared to share the water with jet skis, tubers, party boats, etc that don’t care that you’re there, and lakefront residents that actually HATE that you’re there.
Came to swim based off the google page saying dogs are allowed. We had just gotten out of the car and were trying to figure out where to go when we were rudely yelled at from a distance by a staff member multiple times, while at the same time more staff drove over to us in a cart. This staff member in the cart explained that this is a private club and that to access the water you need to buy a membership and that dogs are not allowed. We apologized, explained that google misled us, and left. I suggest that the google page is updated to accurately reflect that this is a private club and that pets are not allowed on premises. We drove out of our way to come here unfortunately. I also suggest that when non members find their way here whether on purpose or accident, you should try to make a sale and offer them the pricing for a membership instead of making them feel like they are not welcome on the property.
Great people, friendly and gave as discounts for shatha (west syndrome kid) and a Good parking for her. Happy and nice people welcomming us with a smile 😊
One of the best place to have fun. Safest and coolest campground with great staff, ultra clean environment. Had a great time grilling and fishing. Met a bunch of great people.8 to 12 bucks/ adult.
Too expensive. You need to purchase a $200 memebership(yearly pass) for one person or $250 for 2 persons. Then $20 per adult guest or $5 per child. No daily passes. Prices and rules do not show on website.Beautiful and well maintained place.
