West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area Introduce

West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area is a premier destination for military-affiliated families and outdoor enthusiasts located in the heart of the Hudson Valley. This expansive recreation area is managed by the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) program, providing a high-quality escape for active-duty personnel, retirees, veterans, and DoD civilians. Nestled among the rocky, wooded terrain just three miles from the historic United States Military Academy at West Point, Round Pond serves as a scenic mountaintop sanctuary. The centerpiece of the park is a crystal-clear lake surrounded by lush forests, offering a tranquil environment that feels secluded while remaining deeply connected to the heritage of the American Army.

For those living in the New York region, Round Pond offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Highlands. The atmosphere is one of disciplined relaxation, where the grounds are meticulously maintained and the staff is dedicated to serving those who serve. It is a place where history meets modern recreation; campers can enjoy the silence of the woods, interrupted only by the occasional echo from a nearby training range, serving as a reminder of the area's vital role in national defense. Whether you are planning a weekend camping trip, a family reunion in a lakeside pavilion, or a solo fishing expedition, this facility provides a safe and supportive community environment for all authorized patrons.

Location and accessibility are key components of the Round Pond experience. The recreation area is located at 1348 Round Pond Road, West Point, NY 10996, approximately one mile west on Route 293 from Route 9W. Its proximity to New York City—roughly an hour and a half drive—makes it an accessible getaway for those stationed in or visiting the metropolitan area. Travelers should note that the access road involves a steep 24% grade and narrow winding curves, which requires caution, particularly for those towing larger RVs or fifth wheels. Despite its mountainous setting, the park is committed to accessibility, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking lots, and restrooms, ensuring that all members of the military family can enjoy the facilities.

The service offerings at Round Pond are comprehensive, transforming a standard camping trip into a full-scale outdoor adventure. The facility operates as more than just a campground; it is a full-service recreation hub equipped with a dedicated bait shop, equipment rental center, and professional administrative staff. For those who enjoy the water, the canoe and kayak rental services are top-tier, providing all the gear necessary for a day on the lake. Additionally, the park functions as a cabin rental agency, offering a variety of lodging options for those who prefer the comforts of a roof and a bed over a traditional tent.

  • RV camping with full hookups, including 30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer connections (sewer available at specific sites).
  • Comfortable cabin rentals and a specialized rental cottage equipped with kitchens and private bathrooms.
  • On-site bait and tackle shop stocked with live minnows, worms, and essential fishing gear.
  • Extensive equipment rental center offering canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, paddleboards, and mountain bikes.
  • Seasonal swimming beach with professional lifeguards on duty during the summer months.
  • Daily recreational fishing permits available for purchase, providing access to trout-stocked waters.
  • A well-maintained laundromat and modern bathhouse facilities with hot showers.
  • Honey wagon services available on specific days for RV tank pumping and maintenance.
  • Propane refill services and on-site firewood sales for evening campfires.

Features and highlights of the Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area cater specifically to families and groups. The park is designed to be "kid-friendly," featuring a modern playground with slides and swings, as well as designated kid-friendly hiking trails that explore the surrounding woods. For sports enthusiasts, the volleyball and basketball courts provide space for friendly competition. The archery range on-site is a unique feature that appeals to those looking to hone their skills in a picturesque setting. The park’s commitment to providing a welcoming space is further evidenced by its pet-friendly policy, allowing dogs to join their owners in the outdoor areas.

  • Picturesque mountaintop lake ideal for swimming, fishing, and boating activities.
  • A variety of party pavilions and picnic grounds available for reservation, perfect for military unit events or family gatherings.
  • Multiple hiking trails that offer stunning views of the Hudson Highlands and the West Point reservation.
  • Convenient proximity to base facilities, including the commissary and PX, just a short drive away.
  • Safe and engaging playground facilities featuring multiple slides and climbing structures.
  • Educational and historical opportunities with the West Point Museum located only three miles from the gate.
  • Dedicated picnic tables and barbecue grills at every campsite and rental unit.
  • A dog-friendly environment with plenty of space for leashed walks (though pets are restricted from the beach and cabins).

Contact information for the facility is essential for reservations, as demand is high, especially during the fall foliage season and Army home football games. Patron eligibility is restricted to military-affiliated individuals, and a valid ID is required for entry and check-in. It is highly recommended to call the office directly for the most current information on site availability and seasonal hours.

What is worth choosing about West Point FMWR Round Pond Outdoor Recreation Area is the unparalleled sense of community and the value it provides to those who serve. In the competitive New York camping market, Round Pond stands out by offering affordable rates and high-quality amenities exclusively for the military family. This Famcamp is just off base. It is busy around the football games. The road in is tight in some spots be conscious of the time arriving. Our site was partially shaded and level. A nice view of the pond. Facilities are clean. Good washers and dryers. We were close to the dump station and laundry and the aromas that come with that. The range is near by and you can hear training from time to time. There is an archery range on site as well.Gas and Commissary prices are better on base.If you can catch a game you should. This is one of the most beautiful bases that is steeped in history.A great fall foliage stop.

Away from everything and in the woods around the lake. We have tmobile and only a few spots had connectivity. Spot 17 is really good. There is only one shower and restroom bldg and can be a far walk for spots on other side of lake. Only water and electric hook ups for RV spots with 1 dump station near the showers. The laundry is adjacent to showers and is pay $1.75. There are boats to rent and a swimming area. Places to hike as well. Very quiet. Some sites require leveling. There is a small store on site and a manned office. A care taker is on site 24 hrs. RV Sites ring around the lake and some are up high on the hill. Military ID is required for access. Great place for under $30 a night.

Wow, breathtakingly peace filled and wonderfully packed with options for fun on site. The rules are very clear and provided in the welcome pack. This was my first experience here and am very pleased. Definitely returning.I’m not certain how big rigs get up the winding road in or out. In my six speed Jeep Wrangler dropped the gear down to crawl up and around and S curl again and again. God bless anyone with a big rig who can navigate the path.Took a few pictures to give ya the vibe.I’m so happy I found this place and am able to use stay. And, really nice helpful staff on the phone. Very accommodating to my arrival change.Side note, I’m a native NYer. Grew up in the area. The beauty never ceases to amaze me. As a veteran found this location and am so happy. My sis lives in Highland Falls, so it’s close by and it was nice inviting her for a walk and breakfast.Even if you’re from NY, definitely visit. You won’t be disappointed.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💯

Quiet rustic location to camp that is available only to the active and veteran military. We enjoyed our stay and would love to visit again. To access campgrounds may be white-knuckling for RV drivers. The very narrow, no-shoulders road is a 4%-6% uphill grade for about one mile. To my knowledge, it is the only access to enter and exit. Note: trying to arrive after dark may be an intimidating drive, especially for large-size RVs.Once you enter the campgrounds the road flattens but the roads to the campsites are still narrow and one-way direction I assume because of narrowness. However, campsites have built-in serenity. Partial hookup with 30 amp and water only. Typical Sites fit RV and second vehicles very easily including tow dolly.Plenty of outdoor opportunities on campgrounds, and local things to see and visit nearby besides seeing West Point.A recommendation is to visit the Bethel Woods Museum where the famous 1969 Woodstock Concert was held. It's 1 hour away. FYI, the Woodstock concert was not held in Woodstock, NY. It is in Bethel Woods, NY.To the Chief Interior Director (i.e., wives or partners 😀), if you need to pick up supplies and goodies, I recommend visiting Walmart, etc before arriving. I didn't see one nearby.Enjoy
