Choosing the right place to stay in upstate New York often comes down to the type of experience a traveler desires. Whip-O-Will Campground is worth choosing if you value a community-oriented, "neighborhood" feel within a campground setting. Unlike more isolated state parks, this facility offers a sense of security and neighborly interaction that is often preferred by seasonal campers and those who enjoy seeing familiar faces during their stay. The infrastructure is geared toward those who prefer the comforts of an RV over traditional tent camping, providing the necessary hookups and space for a modernized camping experience.
Furthermore, the campground is an excellent choice for families. With a playground on-site and a "good for kids" reputation, it provides an environment where children can be active and social. The inclusion of dogs in the travel plans is another strong selling point for many local New Yorkers. While the roads within the park are gravel and some areas feature speed bumps to ensure the safety of pedestrians and playing children, the cleanliness of the grounds and the friendliness of the staff make it a reliable option for those looking to explore the Purling area. It serves as a functional and social hub for those who want to enjoy the Catskills with the convenience of full service options and a community atmosphere.
Ultimately, Whip-O-Will Campground represents a specific style of New York camping. It is a place for those who enjoy the transition from the city to the country without completely leaving behind the comforts of a developed community. Its proximity to other regional highlights, such as North-South Lake, allows guests to enjoy the amenities of Whip-O-Will while still being a short drive away from more rugged hiking and breathtaking mountain scenery. For a predictable, service-oriented stay in the heart of Greene County, this campground remains a staple for the local camping community.

The campground was… fine. We didn’t stay for the campground, we were there for a wedding. The drive to get in and out of the campground flat out sucks. It’s downhill immediately off the main road which isn’t really their fault, and this isn’t either but our fifth wheel rides low and the bed of the truck absolutely came into contact with our trailer. The one singular dump station is wedged back DEEP into where either permanent residents/seasonal campers live but clearly not any campers that are leaving so why is this where your dump is located?? Not to mention that only one vehicle can fit on the road at once so hope you don’t meet anyone on the way to dump. My last complaint is that there’s speed bumps. I have never been to a campground with speed bumps. If I was an unreasonable person that’d be a 1 star review all on its own. But. The campground was clean, and the woman I interacted with was pleasant.
If you are looking to camp in upstate New York please do not be fooled by this place claiming to be a campground. This is, by all definitions, a TRAILER PARK. My wife and I rented an RV and booked several campsites throughout upstate New York. All of the state park campgrounds that we booked through ReserveAmerica were beautiful and exactly what we were looking for. We made the mistake of booking one "private campground" and that was Whip-O-Will. Upon arriving we discovered what appeared to be a few permanent trailers in the front of the grounds. We checked in and got a map, however the map displays site numbers, which were far and few between in reality. When you goto find your campsite at this place, you are greeted with very narrow, gravel roads with tight turns, as well as semi trucks and excavation trucks driving through the aforementioned narrow gravel roads. It also seemed like 95% of the campsite were taken by trailers with wrap around wooden porches. It legitimately feels like you are entering a developed community of people... living in their homes. Something I am personally looking to escape from during a camping trip. When we find the site we booked it was entirely surrounded by trailers that look they contained permanent residents. We HAD to leave and find a new campground. I did ask for a refund but they were unable to give me one. As unfortunate as that is, we gladly left and booked a site at North-South Lake Campground about 30 minutes away from Whip-o-will and it is a proper campsite with all the amenities, space in between the camp sites, breathtaking scenery, and even high bear activity. If you are looking for a decent experience at all, I would highly reccomend not booking Whip-O-Will "Campground"
Great staff bathroom are very clean , no bugs , tent sites have water spigot, lots of chipmunks . Stayed at campground twice this past summer, pool is also super clean and they make some good pizza in the arcade area..
This is a great place to get away for a week or weekend. Lots of fun can be had in the rec hall, pool, or fishing at the pond. Special events happen on most Fridays or Saturdays especially on holiday weekends. The round top volunteers fire dept does a 50/50 raffle as well most weekends.
Very good. The "lake" is nothing special by New York standards, but it checks off the box. There is a fun culture there that is unique and special. A really nice place!
