Big Sky Tent Deck Introduce
Big Sky Tent Deck offers one of the most unique and secluded camping experiences in the Upper Valley of Vermont. Located within the 107-acre expanse of Willoughby Rescue, a non-profit farm animal sanctuary in Fairlee, this specific site is designed for those who want to trade the crowded atmosphere of traditional campgrounds for the serenity of a mountaintop. As the name suggests, the Big Sky site features a meticulously constructed wooden deck that provides a level, dry platform for your tent, perched high above the valley floor to offer panoramic views of the Green Mountains and beyond.
For local Vermont residents seeking a true "getaway" without leaving the state, this site represents the ultimate in privacy and immersion. Because the Big Sky Tent Deck is situated approximately a half-mile hike from the main farm hub, it serves as a quiet sanctuary where the only sounds you are likely to hear are the wind through the trees and the distant call of farm animals below. This is not a site for "car camping" in the traditional sense; rather, it is a reward for those willing to put in a little effort for an extraordinary view. The atmosphere is one of rugged peace, making it a favorite for stargazers, hikers, and anyone looking to reconnect with the natural world in its most undisturbed state.
Location and accessibility are important factors to consider when planning your visit to Big Sky. The site is located at 1098 Wild Hill Road in Fairlee, VT, easily accessible from Interstate 91. However, once you arrive at the farm, the journey to the Big Sky Tent Deck truly begins. Guests must be prepared for a steep, approximately 15-minute hike from the designated on-site parking area. The trail up to the deck is a delightful adventure in itself, winding through lush blackberry bushes and featuring various bits of "random kitsch" and artistic landmarks that serve as fun waypoints. Due to the elevation and the hike-in nature of the site, it is highly recommended to pack light and use a backpack rather than rolling coolers or heavy bins. Visitors are also advised to download offline maps before arrival, as cellular service in the Fairlee hills can be unreliable.
- Mountaintop Tent Deck: A large, sturdy wooden platform that keeps your tent off the ground and provides a perfectly level sleeping surface.
- Private Fire Ring: A dedicated stone fire pit located right at the site for evening campfires and cooking.
- Picnic Table: A heavy-duty wooden table for dining with a view.
- Animal Interactions: While the site is secluded, guests are encouraged to visit the main farm area to meet the rescued donkeys, sheep, and alpacas.
- On-Site Parking: Secure parking is provided at the base of the trail near the main farmhouse.
- Trash and Recycling: Dedicated bins are located at the farm hub to help guests adhere to "Leave No Trace" principles.
- Gear Rental: For those traveling light, the host often offers rentals for essentials like cast iron cookware or propane stoves.
The features and highlights of a stay at Big Sky Tent Deck are centered on the visual and sensory experience of the Vermont wilderness. The westward-facing orientation of the deck makes it one of the premier spots in the region for witnessing sunsets that paint the entire sky in shades of orange and purple. Beyond the scenery, the presence of the animal rescue adds a layer of warmth and community to the experience. Guests often remark on the "friendly animals" that greet them at the trailhead, creating a whimsical and welcoming start to their mountain adventure.
- Spectacular Sunsets: Uninterrupted views of the sun dipping below the mountain ridges.
- Stargazing: Zero light pollution allows for a crystal-clear view of the Milky Way and constellations.
- Seclusion and Privacy: The site is intentionally isolated from other campers, ensuring a quiet retreat.
- Nature Trails: Immediate access to the farm’s 107 acres of woods and meadows for exploring.
- Wildlife Spotting: Frequent sightings of local birds, deer, and the farm’s own curious residents.
- Kid-Friendly Adventure: The hike and the "landmark" kitsch along the trail make it an exciting exploration for children.
- Support for Animal Rescue: All camping fees directly fund the care and feeding of the farm's rescue animals.
- Blackberry Picking: Seasonal opportunities to forage for wild berries along the path to the deck.
When considering a trip to Big Sky, it is worth noting that the host is highly responsive and welcoming, often providing personalized tips for navigating the local terrain. The site is part of a larger mission of animal stewardship, so staying here allows you to contribute to a meaningful cause while enjoying a world-class view. Because of its popularity for sunset viewing and its unique platform setup, booking in advance through the farm's preferred platforms is essential, especially during the peak foliage season in October.

Fantastic stay. Will definitely go another time—friendly host, friendly animals (except the rooster, lol), great site, quiet and private, great views. The hike in is full of blackberry bushes and lots of random kitsch just for fun (and landmarks). Just spent some time showing my family photos.
Amazing sunset! We didn't camp here but it was well worth the hike 😍
Got to help build the foundation for the tent deck that will no doubt be the best camping spot on the property once completed. The campground has an incredible view of the nearby mountains, fire pit, grill, comfy lounge chairs and bluetooth speakers. Perfect for those who don't mind (or prefer) a little hike to a nice secluded spot where you really feel immersed in nature. Can't wait to come back and put it to use!
Hiked with Scott to the top of his land awhile back and said, you should build a tent site here! Finally Scott listened to me and is building an awesome campsite with spectacular views. (although he should rename it "Robin's Nest" IMHO). 100% of your camping fees support the Rescue!"
