Willoughby Rescue Introduce
Willoughby Rescue is not your typical Vermont campground; it is a heart-centered 107-acre farm animal sanctuary and non-profit organization that invites visitors to "camp with the critters." Located in the rolling hills of Fairlee, Vermont, this destination offers a boutique camping experience where every dollar spent on site goes directly toward the care, feeding, and medical needs of rescued farm animals. Founded in 2014 by Brian J. Stephens and G. Scott Graham, the rescue has become a beloved fixture in the Upper Valley, providing a safe haven for abandoned, neglected, and orphaned animals including donkeys, sheep, alpacas, potbellied pigs, and rabbits.
For local Vermont residents and travelers alike, a stay at Willoughby Rescue offers a profound opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. The atmosphere is defined by the gentle presence of the animals, who often act as "hilarious and friendly" neighbors to guests. Whether you are sleeping in the unique greenhouse, pitching a tent on a secluded mountain deck, or parking your RV, you are immersed in a working farm environment that prioritizes animal welfare and land stewardship. The property serves as a peaceful retreat where the morning alarm is often the sound of farm life, and the evenings are illuminated by an unpolluted night sky that reveals the Milky Way in stunning detail.
Location and accessibility are important considerations for those planning a visit to this secluded hilltop farm. Willoughby Rescue is located at 1098 Wild Hill Road in Fairlee, VT, within the scenic Northeast Kingdom region. While the farm feels worlds away from civilization, it is relatively easy to reach from Interstate 91, making it accessible for those coming from Montpelier or the Connecticut River Valley. However, visitors should be aware that the final approach involves rural Vermont roads. It is highly recommended to download offline maps, as cell service can be spotty and GPS units may occasionally attempt to route vehicles onto old 4-wheeler or logging roads. The farm offers on-site parking, though some specific campsites, like the "Big Sky Tent Deck," require a steep, short hike from the parking area, adding to the sense of adventure and seclusion.
- RV Camping: Dedicated sites that offer modern comforts including water, electric hookups, and Wi-Fi access for those traveling with trailers or motorhomes.
- Greenhouse Glamping: A truly unique lodging option that provides a "luxurious" feel even during rainy weather, allowing guests to sleep surrounded by greenery.
- Tent Decks: Elevated 10x8 wood decks such as the "Big Sky" and "Buddha North" sites, designed to keep campers off the ground while providing spectacular mountain views.
- Pasture Camping: Opportunities to pitch a tent directly in the pasture areas for those who want to be "where the action is" with the animals.
- Farm Tours: Personalized tours of the rescue sanctuary where guests can learn the stories of the resident animals and interact with them under supervision.
- Hiking: Access to private trails and woodlots on the 107-acre property, as well as proximity to the world-class hiking trails of the nearby Willoughby State Forest.
- Volunteer Opportunities: Seasonal "Camp for Free" weekends where guests can contribute to farm chores like fence building and animal care in exchange for a stay.
- On-site Amenities: Access to picnic tables, park grills, private fire rings, and basic restroom facilities.
The features and highlights of Willoughby Rescue are centered on the interactive and compassionate nature of the farm. Unlike traditional campgrounds where you are just a number, here you are a guest of the animal community. The property is known for its inclusive and welcoming spirit, proudly identifying as LGBTQ+ friendly. For families, the farm is an educational playground where children can learn about where food comes from and the importance of animal rescue work. The resident donkeys and alpacas are often the stars of the show, known for their curiosity and willingness to greet visitors during their morning chores.
- Animal Interaction: Daily opportunities to meet and bond with friendly donkeys, sheep, and pigs who call the rescue their forever home.
- Stunning Vistas: Southwest-facing ridges provide panoramic 50-mile views, particularly from the upper tent decks which offer some of the best sunsets in Fairlee.
- Farm Fresh Goods: Depending on the season, guests may have access to farm-fresh eggs or homemade items like kombucha and jams produced by the owners.
- Peaceful Seclusion: Many sites are tucked away from the main farm hub, providing a quiet environment for meditation, reading, and relaxation.
- Support for a Mission: The unique "feel-good" aspect of knowing that camping fees are directly supporting the 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue efforts.
- Dog-Friendly Policy: Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join their owners, provided they are respectful of the resident farm animals.
- Seasonal Beauty: From the 8,000 daffodils that bloom in the spring to the vibrant foliage of the autumn, the landscape is ever-changing and visually striking.
- The "Buddha" Site: A specific area of the farm dedicated to quiet reflection, featuring a large Buddha statue donated to the rescue.
For those looking for a place to stay, Willoughby Rescue is open seasonally and often lists its availability through platforms like Hipcamp. It is a favorite for those who enjoy "low-impact" camping and don't mind a little bit of Vermont mud or the authentic smells of a working farm. Guests are encouraged to bring their own bedding and supplies, especially for the cabin and tent deck options. Because the rescue is a private entity and a working farm, unscheduled visits are not accommodated; all stays and tours must be booked in advance to ensure the safety and comfort of the animals.

We had an amazing weekend at Scott's farm! The animals were hilarious and super friendly. The greenhouse felt luxurious - especially in the rain! We loved hiking around the property, cooking farm fresh eggs in the morning, and disconnecting from the outside world. Scott is welcoming and very responsive. Definitely listen to his warning about downloading Google Maps before you leave to re-route around 4-wheeler roads. We can't wait to go stay again!
We had a wonderful stay at the big sky tent deck site! It is in a peaceful secluded spot and the views were gorgeous. The hike up is steep so be prepared! Getting greeted by all the animals everyday was such a bonus! Definitely recommend!
Had such an amazing experience at Scott’s rescue. The big sky tent deck wasn’t too long of a hike in, and the setup was very well done. Stunning views of the Vermont countryside. The farm tour Scott provided was such a great time as we got to help Scott out with a few of his daily chores. Highly recommend coming to stay and learn at Scott’s rescue. Thank you so much!
My dad and I spent a weekend here in an RV a few weeks ago. We were parked way closer to the main house than I had expected we would be but aside from that it was such a great mini vacation. I think most people who come here are camping in tents and those sites are very private. I think we were just parked in the only location that could handle our size. Just something to be aware of if you're RVing there!I grew up on a farm but I don't live on one anymore so when we were planning our trip I was hoping to find a place with as many animals as possible. There were donkeys and pigs outside the camper door every morning and they hung around with us when we sat outside. They were all so sweet and friendly, I was in love. It was fun to watch the big flock of geese that wanders around together. There were alpacas and sheep out in the pasture but we mostly hung around with the animals that were closer. The owner was upbeat and super friendly and helpful. We'd totally go back again!
This was an amazing trip! The animals were all incredibly well taken care of as Scott was a great host. The big sky tent deck was absolutely stunning and the farm tour the next morning was such a great experience. Thank you so much for the weekend, I will definitely be returning!
