Bova Cottages, Allegany State Park Introduce
For New York residents looking for a retreat that combines the rugged beauty of the wilderness with the comforts of modern living, Bova Cottages at Allegany State Park stands as a premier choice. Located within the 65,000-acre "Flagship" park of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, these cottages offer a level of convenience and luxury that far exceeds the traditional cabin experience. While many areas of the park feature rustic, one-room shelters, the Bova loop—constructed around 2014—is designed for groups and families who want a solid home base for their adventures. These year-round lodgings allow visitors to experience the transformation of the Allegany forest through all four seasons, from the vibrant foliage of autumn to the pristine snowscapes of winter.
The Bova Cottages are specifically situated on the Red House side of the park, an area known for its accessibility and variety of recreational hubs. This section of the park is often preferred by those who enjoy easy access to paved bike paths, the tranquil Red House Lake, and the Red House Administration Building. The cottages themselves are modern, spacious, and well-appointed, bridging the gap between a hotel stay and a camping trip. With high-efficiency heating systems and robust insulation, they are a favorite for winter enthusiasts who spend their days on the Art Roscoe cross-country ski trails and their nights in a warm, comfortable interior.
Location and accessibility are key features of the Bova Loop experience. The cottages are located at Camp Allegany, Salamanca, NY 14779, within the Red House Area. To reach this destination, travelers typically use I-86 (Southern Tier Expressway), taking Exits 19 or 20. The drive is approximately one hour and 40 minutes from Buffalo and roughly two hours and 45 minutes from Rochester. Unlike some of the park's more remote cabin trails, Bova is designed with ADA compliance in mind, featuring level entrances, wide doorways, and accessible bathroom facilities. This makes it an ideal choice for multi-generational families where grandparents and young children can navigate the space with ease. Parking is available on-site, with each cottage permit allowing for two vehicles to be parked overnight.
The services offered at Bova Cottages are comprehensive, aiming to provide a "full-service" lodging experience. Unlike standard cabins where you might need to bring everything including the kitchen sink, these units come equipped with the essentials for a comfortable stay. The park's private-sector partner, ASP Partners, manages these units to ensure that basic domestic needs are met, allowing guests to focus on the natural surroundings. It is important to note that while bedding and linens are provided, the park has recently adopted a policy where guests are responsible for making their own beds upon arrival.
- Full kitchen facilities including a cooktop, microwave (or convection oven), and a full-sized refrigerator with a freezer.
- Kitchen essentials provided: pots, pans, dishes, glasses, silverware, and basic cooking utensils.
- Full bathroom inside the cottage, featuring a shower stall, toilet, and sink with hot running water.
- Linens and towels provided for up to six guests, including sheets, blankets, pillows, and a set of towels per person.
- Year-round climate control with reliable propane heating systems for winter comfort.
- Pet-friendly accommodations available in specific units (Bova 6 through 12) with proof of rabies vaccination.
- On-site waste management with trash pickup services to maintain a clean environment.
- Professional maintenance and security staff available through the Red House Administration Building.
The features and highlights of a Bova Cottage stay center on the unique amenities that make these units feel like a true "home in the woods." From the covered porches that allow for outdoor relaxation regardless of the weather to the proximity to the park's most popular interpretive sites, there is plenty to appreciate. The interiors are designed for utility and durability, featuring easy-to-clean epoxy-flecked floors and sturdy furniture. Outside, each cottage has its own dedicated space for traditional camping activities like campfires and grilling.
- Two separate bedrooms: typically one with a queen-sized bed and another with two single beds.
- Additional sleeping space in the living area via two pull-out futons.
- A spacious covered porch with two picnic tables, perfect for outdoor dining and observing local wildlife.
- Located near Butterfly Meadow and the Red House bike trail, offering easy access to five miles of paved paths.
- Proximity to the wetland interpretive area where cell service is generally more reliable.
- Exterior amenities including a dedicated fire pit and a barbecue grill at each site.
- Large windows that provide ample natural light and views of the surrounding forested valleys.
- Access to the full range of Allegany State Park activities including beach swimming, boat rentals, and 90 miles of snowmobile trails.
For those planning a stay, it is recommended to book well in advance through the Reserve America system, as these units are in high demand throughout the year. During the peak summer season, reservations typically require a seven-night stay, while the off-season offers more flexibility with a two-night minimum. What is worth choosing about Bova Cottages is the balance of modern reliability and immersion in New York’s largest state park. Choosing these cottages is worth it specifically for groups of six who want a shared space that includes a private bathroom and a full kitchen—luxuries that are rare in many state park systems. The accessibility of the Bova loop makes it a standout choice for those with mobility concerns, ensuring that the beauty of Allegany’s un-glaciated landscape is available to everyone. While the floors can be cold and the lighting is primarily overhead, the addition of a few personal items like slippers and a reading lamp turns these units into a cozy sanctuary. For a winter getaway, the heating is exceptional, providing a warm refuge after a day of ice fishing on Red House Lake or snowshoeing through the quiet, snow-covered valleys.
Ultimately, a stay at Bova Cottages is worth choosing because it simplifies the logistics of a nature vacation. By providing the cookware, linens, and appliances, the park allows you to spend less time packing and more time exploring the Stone Tower, the Summit Fire Tower, or the famous Thunder Rocks. It is a place where parents can feel secure, grandparents can stay comfortable, and children can experience the wonder of "bear country" safely. Whether you are returning for an annual family tradition or discovering Allegany State Park for the first time, Bova Cottages provide a professional, clean, and engaging environment that represents the very best of New York’s outdoor hospitality.

Spacious, accessible, and well appointed cabins.Dishes, glasses, coffee cups, provided along with a set of basic pots and pans, utensils, knife block, measuring cups and spoons, toaster, microwave, coffee pot. We didn’t have any sheet pans and there were only 5 forks so we had to improvise!Toilet paper, small dish soap, linens for all beds (and futons!) with one pillow for each, and a set of towel/ hand-towel/ washcloth for 6 guests provided. The floors are on level, cement finished with a flecked epoxy and are on the colder side, bring slippers because socks get dirty quick! This also gives an echo-y garage feel so if you’re staying awhile or it matters to you bring some throw rugs.Room for air mattresses on the floor if you don’t want to use the futons as beds, in our case in Bova 8 one futon was super comfortable and one that was not, so the air mattress came in handy. Two picnic tables on the covered porch and a table with benches inside. The lighting is all overhead, bring a lamp or lantern for bedrooms and coffee table. Located on the red house side near Butterfly Meadow, the red house bike trail, and some cell service is available nearby at the wetland interpretive area.Overall a solid place to stay for a group of 6 campers. We had grandparents, parents, and kids together for a weekend.
During our 3 day stay in a Bova cabin we had a great time in Jan 2024. Few things need updated: BEDS were terrible! Bathroom shower leaked on floor. Cleaning crew needs attention to webs on walls and dust on fans. Heater worked great!! I'd reserve again when updated. Staff were very nice and helpful.
The place was very comfortable for 6 people with enough bedding, kitchen appliances, couches and washrooms. Maintained clean and warm. The only concern was about rats. Too many rats at night specially. Avoid using their kitchen items as I saw rats on toaster, biting the spatulas and other items.
Very nice cabins. 2 bedrooms. Full bed in one room, 2 twins in the other. Nice kitchen. Stove top, coffee pot, microwave, fridge and sink. Bathroom has a shower, toilet and sink. Fully stocked with toilet paper. Cabin stays nice and warm during the winter. 2 futons in the living room. Picnic table in the living room. Fire pit and covered porch. We already have our next visit booked.
My wife and I have never had a more disappointing stay in Allegany. For our honeymoon we reserved a bova cottage for a week. Some of the advertised amenities from when we booked in March were removed due to covid 19 such as the silverware, cups, and plates as well the linens for the beds. The two futon couches had covers but they were dirty and stained. The biggest issue we had was with the mouse infestation. After going to bed the first night we were awoken to gnawing and scratching sounds in the walls above our heads and in the utility closet in the main bedroom that is to the right of the bed. When we came out in the morning, we noticed several things had been chewed on including sealed food containers, dish sponges, utensils, and other things we brought to the cottage. Upon further inspection the cabinets and drawers were full of mouse droppings and other signs of infestation. I went to the admin building around 9am and reported the issue and was told that someone would be by with traps. by 5pm no one had come by. I went back up and the representative at the counter said that the maintenance manager for J-Con (the 3rd party that services the bova cottages) never came in that day and they couldn't get ahold of them. I went into town and purchased traps and by the end of the first night I had two mice trapped. The following afternoon while we were out someone dropped of a package of 4 traps. The next two nights I trapped three more mice. After that it seemed that that cottage was free of mice. Overall, I would not recommend reserving a bova cottage at this point. For the price i paid to have my honeymoon ruined by having to trap mice for half the week and the poor response by J-Con parks inc, it's just not worth it.
