Pitt Cottage, Allegany State Park Introduce
For those living in the New York region, Allegany State Park has long been a cornerstone of outdoor recreation and traditional family vacations. Known as the largest state park in the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation system, it offers a vast wilderness escape for residents seeking refuge from the urban landscape. Among the various lodging options nestled within this expansive park is Pitt Cottage, a structure designated as a full-service cottage intended to provide a more refined alternative to traditional tent camping or basic cabin living. As a part of the Red House area of the park, it caters to visitors who want to experience the natural splendor of the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York.
Pitt Cottage is situated within a park that spans over 65,000 acres, characterized by its primitive forests, rolling hills, and abundant wildlife. For many New Yorkers, a stay at a state park cottage represents a deep-rooted tradition, providing a base camp for exploring miles of hiking trails, fishing in pristine lakes, and participating in seasonal activities. This specific cottage is positioned to offer guests a sense of privacy while remaining within the governed boundaries of the state park system. It is designed to function as a year-round destination, allowing visitors to witness the vibrant foliage of autumn, the quiet snowscapes of winter, and the lush greenery of the New York summer.
The location and accessibility of Pitt Cottage make it a primary choice for travelers navigating the southern tier of New York State. Located specifically at Allegany State Park Rte 2, Salamanca, NY 14779, the cottage is easily accessible via the Interstate 86 corridor. This makes it a convenient drive for residents coming from Buffalo, Rochester, or even those making the trek from the New York City metropolitan area. The cottage is positioned along a main park route, ensuring that guests can find their way to the site without navigating overly complex backcountry roads, which is particularly beneficial for those arriving after sunset or during inclement weather.
Once within the park, Pitt Cottage is part of a network of roads that connect to the Red House administration building, the park’s museum, and various recreational facilities. While the setting is undeniably rustic and immersed in nature, the proximity to the town of Salamanca provides a secondary layer of convenience for guests who may need to replenish supplies, visit local grocery stores, or explore the nearby Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino. The park’s layout is designed to be navigable by standard passenger vehicles, though visitors are always encouraged to check seasonal road closures and park alerts before their departure to ensure a smooth transition to their vacation home.
As a full-service lodging option, Pitt Cottage is intended to offer a higher level of convenience than the standard "A-frame" or primitive cabins found elsewhere in Allegany State Park. The services provided are geared towards families and groups who prefer a stay that mirrors residential living. Based on the classification of these facilities, the services offered include:
- Enclosed living quarters designed to withstand various weather conditions throughout the New York seasons.
- Full kitchen infrastructure including a stove, oven, refrigerator, and sink for on-site meal preparation.
- Dedicated sleeping areas often separated from the main living space to provide privacy for multiple guests.
- On-site plumbing providing running water for washing and kitchen tasks.
- Heating systems to accommodate the often-chilly nights of the Western New York mountain region.
- Proximity to park administration services for check-in, key collection, and general information regarding park regulations.
- Access to the park's network of maintenance and security staff who patrol the state park grounds.

- A private wood walkway and entrance designed to integrate with the natural surrounding terrain.
- A location near some of the park's most famous trails, including the Red House Lake loop and the Art Roscoe Cross Country Ski and Mountain Bike Area.
- Nautical and forest views that change significantly with the passing of each season, offering excellent photography opportunities.
- Access to a wide variety of wildlife, ranging from local bird species to the white-tailed deer and black bears that call the park home.

- An environment that allows for complete disconnection from city noise, characterized by deep forest silence and clear night skies for stargazing.
- Traditional state park architecture that reflects the heritage and history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) influence in the region.

When deciding what is worth choosing for your New York getaway, it is important to balance the potential for a beautiful natural experience with the realities of staying in a rustic, state-managed facility. Pitt Cottage is worth choosing if your primary goal is to be in the heart of Allegany State Park with the convenience of an indoor kitchen and hard-walled shelter. For many, the ability to walk out the front door and immediately be on a trail or near a lake is the ultimate luxury that outweighs the complexities of park lodging.
However, prospective guests must be aware of the challenges associated with staying in a wilderness-adjacent property. Public data and recent feedback from visitors indicate significant concerns regarding pest control and maintenance. Reports from real customers have highlighted persistent issues with rodent infestations, including sightings of mice in kitchens and living areas, as well as smells associated with pets from previous occupants on the exterior walkways. These reports suggest that the "full service" aspect of the cottage can be compromised by the natural wildlife of the park if the administration is unable to keep up with maintenance demands. Visitors have noted that while the setting is beautiful, the internal cleanliness and response from administration regarding these hazards have been disappointing to some.
If you choose to stay at Pitt Cottage, it may be worth coming prepared for a "refined camping" experience rather than a hotel-standard stay. Bringing your own cleaning supplies, being vigilant about food storage to deter the local mouse population, and maintaining open communication with the park office are recommended strategies. Ultimately, for the seasoned New York outdoorsman, the draw of the Allegany wilderness remains a powerful motivator, but for those expecting a pristine residential environment, a careful review of current conditions and personal preparation is strongly advised before committing to a long-term stay.

Beware!! Infested with Rodents. Upon arrival the front walkway had the worst dog feces smell. It must have been diarrhea because it was picked up but not scubed clean off of the wood walkway. That was my job. One hour of the day spent scrubbing with hot water to stop the smell. Once inside and getting settled you start to see mouse droppings. Everywhere!! The kitchen sink, the counter tops, the toaster, the stove and even inside the oven. You can hear the Rodents running in the ceiling and walls. During the day they ran from the refrigerator to the stove then inside the cabinets. The complaints fell of deaf ears. I was told "there are alot of mice this year". I told them it's infested. We powered through it and purchased mouse traps. During our one week stay we caught a total of 11 mice. That was with only 2 traps purchased of the 3rd day. So 4 days 11 mice. You can still hear them running wild in the ceiling. It's absurd that no complaints were addressed. It's a health hazard at this point and the health department needs to know this as well. If your going to rent a full service cottage there is now way this should be allowed. Don't waste your time and money. Please don't jeopardize your health as well. STAY AWAY!!!
We just stayed at this cabin rented it for 2 weeks cost over $1,100 first night we saw mice running around the cabin to the point that I had to take my wife home reported it to the administration building they said they would come out and put traps but nobody came. So I went and bought some and in the first 12 hours after putting them down I got eight mice. Woke up in the morning mice poop all over the stove and the covers. We rented it for 2 weeks total time spent with 3 days total waste of money very disappointed
We stayed here for 2 nights and spent half the time cleaning the place. True, it’s a cottage in Allegany state park but it was filthy, and we felt dirty just being there. If it was just a bunch of guys staying there it would be fine, but with the wife and kids it feels bad. I have fond memories of staying here throughout the years, but this time was not great. It’s a shame because it’s a nice cottage in a beautiful area. Also, please fix the door: it’s a chore just to unlock it.
